Democrats Block Coronavirus Bill That Provides Lifeline To Economy, Families

"The Times noted that the Democrats’ decision to block the bill sent U.S. stock futures tumbling to the maximum limit on Sunday evening. The Times further added that Republicans and Democrats had agreed that the plan was “crucial” to stopping economic fallout from the outbreak of the coronavirus as the bill would have sent $1,200 in direct payments to millions of Americans and would have provided lots of additional benefits."

"Townhall political editor Guy Benson reported that Senate sources said that Democrat House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was responsible for tanking the bill.

“Talking to some Senate GOP sources. They seem stunned and angry,” Benson said. “I’m told there was lots of bipartisan input into the legislative outline & emerging specifics – including an agreement in principle on broad strokes. Then Pelosi showed up and threw a partisan grenade.”

"Democrats tried to claim that the bill was a corporate bailout and a slush fund and did not protect workers, which is misleading. Part of what Democrats have used to try to make the claim was a component of the relief package that gives the Treasury Department the power to distribute $500 billion in emergency federal loans to states, cities, and businesses."

Yeah, sending $1200-$2000 to Americans who have lost their jobs or cannot work is a corporate bailout, right. Even if it is, which it isn't, do think you average citizen is going to care? No, all they are going to see is Dems keeping them from getting financial aide they desperately need and that's what they'll remember come November.

Yes. Providing $320+ billion in financial aide directly to Americans is GOP greed. Yes.

So was this a good deal for all sides or no? I hear people blaming Dems, but then I see people who read the bill say the Rep are trying to shaft the people in favor of businesses. And then in R/P I see 4 threads about this and the Dems on the first page. So was this a good deal or no?

It was a bi-partisan bill, and the Dems pulled back at the last moment.

Dems don't seem to relaize that saving businesses help people. No one wants massive unemployment.

Good questions. Try to hear the signal from all the noise.

NYTimes is fairly reputable and objective.

Democrats voted against moving forward on a plan expected to cost $1.8 trillion or more, seeking stronger protections for workers and stricter rules for bailed-out businesses.

“This is irresponsible and unwise,” said Senator Susan Collins, Republican of Maine. “They are playing with fire.”

The move enraged Republicans, whose numbers were dwindling after Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky announced on Sunday that he had contracted the coronavirus and prompted two other senators to self-isolate and miss the vote that evening. The Democratic maneuver, they argued, contravened days of bipartisan negotiations and jeopardized faith that Congress was capable of mustering a legislative salve for a shuddering economy.

“In the midst of an unprecedented national crisis, Republicans can’t seriously expect us to tell people in our communities who are suffering that we shortchanged hospitals, students, workers and small businesses, but gave big corporations hundreds of billions of dollars in a secretive slush fund,” said Senator Patty Murray, Democrat of Washington, who has largely negotiated over the phone in part as a precaution.

Democrats also said the measure provided insufficient unemployment aid — offering only three months while they have insisted on at least four — and lacked adequate funding for state and local governments, emergency food assistance and relief from student loans.

What did the dems want regarding student loans that wasn't in there. You can already claim hardship deferrals and that was before this crisis. I know Warren was calling for debt forgiveness was that the main hangup that the dems wanted?

The main problem with the Republican bill is it's aid is based on 2018 returns. Honestly that's pretty stupid. Plenty of us had dramatic changes in 2019. Dems think we should just send everyone 1200 dollars. That's stupid IMO. I think sending people money is stupid in general. Provide housing relief, food, etc, but sending people money is silly IMO. Although I admit I'd love a 1200 dollar check.

Address the points in the article or else stfu. You have no credibility because you don't know anything. Just another fox-news parrot who mows lawns for a living.

Your source is a blog from biased, right-wing commentator Ben Shapiro.

The New York Times has been awarded 125 Pulitzer Prizes, more than any other newspaper. They won their first prize in 1918 for complete and accurate coverage of World War I, and their most recent in 2018.

    Time to grow up.

How else are you going to measure affluence except for the last set of complete data the federal government has? Nothing will be perfect. I'm still working for example and so is my wife and we will continue unless the actual apocalypse happens we don't need any money but we'll get checks.

No, all they are going to see is Dems keeping them from getting financial aide they desperately need and that's what they'll remember come November.
so people will get relief $$$ great.
I have some friends who are out of work and that are single parents either financially f'd because of child support or their ex doesn't pay chit to them so they don't have months of savings or a steady paycheck.
Right now, some banks are pausing mortgages and some utilities have stopped billing.
if they are lucky enough to not have to worry about those bills they will be fine for at least a month, probably longer if they can file for unemployment.
A few chit-stain companies have not laid people off, they reduced their hours to Zero so they can't file for unemployment.
I'm not going to name the biggest offender because as of last week they took a chit-storm of flak on social media and may be changing their mind.
so the people got some money.

    But, what about their companies?
will they still be there to bring them back to work when this is over?

not every employer is a "big greedy corporation" with millions of dollars in the coffers to stay in the black.
what happens if they close for good because of this?
