Brahs: Is super-high FPS (100+) worth it?

Was debating between two PC builds, one with a Core i5-9400F + 1660 and a joocier build with a Core i7-9700 + 2060.

I was wanting to play games at really high framerates for the smoothness, but is there a difference between say 100 FPS and 150 FPS? Can you see the difference on a 144 Hz Gsync monitor? Thanks for any help guys.

Some people say yes, others say you can't notice the difference.

I personally can tell the difference and it looks smoother. So I recommend it. But every person is different.

There's a very noticeable difference. FPS aside, I still wouldn't get the i5-9400F. That's an antiquated piece of chit CPU.

Why shoot yourself in the foot when you're considering a decently all-rounded machine as an alternative?

I think it's worth it. Most noticeable when you go back down to 60 or 30 frames per second. I have a freesync monitor which is nice because my pc can't run games with high fps on ultra all the time so never any screen tearing when the frames dip. If you wanted 4k you'd go for 60 fps unless running a top tier pc.

Depends on how much FPS your brain is. Doesnt do good to get a ps4 pro if you have a 1080p tv.

Absolutely worth it. You need 144 Hz locked refresh rate. I notice way less eye strain and it’s just like a massive difference in immersion and smoothness.

3700X has almost equal single-thread performance with i7 9700 (unless you meant the K version) and is about $70 cheaper but beats the Intel on multithreading scores.
Why would you get the intel then?

Interdasting that you say this. I posted the 9700 build for feedback on Reddit and they were like "why do you even need that much CPU. Go with a Core i5." Granted, I trust this place a lot more.

Anyway, it sounds pretty much unanimous that I should go with the faster hardware, but all the fukking Core i7-9700Fs just sold out, so the build is going on hold for a bit.... Thanks brahs.

Reddit is full of fukking morons. I've been building PC's for over a decade. If you're looking to game at high FPS then your CPU is just as important as your GPU. One can bottleneck the other, and some games are very demanding on a CPU. It's as simple as that.

As the other poster said, consider a Ryzen. They're great chips.

as far as fps goes, I'd say it depends what you're playing. Where I noticed the biggest difference by far is with shooting games. When you whip around quick on high frame rates you can actually see still compared to 60 hz where its basically just a blur til you stop turning. 60 to 144 is literally a game changing difference, whereas 144 to 240 isn't very noticeable. Also, go with the i7 regardless of frames

60-144 or 100-144 is a huge noticable improvement visually and trying to play 60hz after 144 is not an enjoyable experience

144-240 are dimishing gains and i think the advantage is responsiveness, so in fortnite for example building feels more responsive

just get a 3700x instead, its cheaper, has twice the threads and 4.4 vs 4.7 max boost is not that huge a difference if you want it now

It's less noticeable going to 144hz, but very noticeable going back to 60hz after you have gotten used to 144hz. It helps though.

The most honest answer is 'it depends'. If you're playing Witcher 3 on PC and average say 50FPS, having a 200+Hz monitor doesn't help you.

But, if you like playing FPS competitively (I did for many years), 60FPS etc. just doesn't cut it. Even back in 2000 or so I was on a 100Hz monitor maxing that FPS by turning down settings say in Quake 3.

My next monitor purchase will (hopefully) be a 144Hz 4k HDR 27-30 inch 4:4:4. I can play something like Cyberpunk at 60fps average but if I'm going to play Doom Eternal I want 100fps plus.

Still haven't bought it for that very reason - waiting for the right monitor, but it is taking fu*king forever to be released.

get a 5700xt, it competes with the 2070 super on benchmarks and is priced like the 2060.

    https://www.gpucheck.com/compare-mul...eon-rx-5700-xt

What resolution you wanna run at? if you want 2k get the 5700xt or 2070 super if you like Nvidia.

Yeah I got a nice high-end PC with a 144hz monitor and I definitely notice a difference, but it usually only matters when playing games where frame rate is a big deal such as racing games and FPS.

144 hz is beautiful when you experience it the first time vs 60 hz. It's like losing your virginity. As for pure fps, consistent 100+ is solid for improving aiming, if you're competitive about shooter games.

I'll second what most people say about 144 Hz, it really is a night and day difference.

I'm a huge Battlefield player, and switching from 144 Hz to 60 Hz feels like seeing the world as an 80 year old player. You don't really notice it if you're used to 60 Hz, but going from 144 Hz to 60 Hz makes you wonder how you could ever life a gaming life in 60 Hz.
