Sounds like its the benchmark for vr games right now.

Chronos was one of the full legit games made for VR from the ground up and it blew me away. I can only imagine what Valve were able to do. Definitely getting it.

Rift S or Quest is pretty much it at that price point. $400+tax. I prefer playing wirelessly so I got the Quest but the Rift S has slightly higher fidelity displays and better comfort out the box if you can live with wires.

Next step up is the Index at $1,000.

Why is valve index that expensive? Does it have good chit on it or is it just the brand

Because they can get away with selling it for $1k all day is really the only reason. It's better than the Rift S but not enough to justify being over twice the price. If money isn't an issue people get the Index or Pimax.

Played some more. Game is so uniquely intense. Has me shook, there was a place that was scarier than Resident Evil as a kid. First time since then I felt genuine fear. I was legit shaking, but in a good way. I cant believe its damn near photo realistic. Its what we always dreamed of as kids.

    Imagine a kid playing this.

I'm 6 hours in. One of the best single player games ive ever played.
For this game I would say 1070 is minimum and 1060 is minimum for most VR games that have less of a load. This would be playing it at low graphics which you dont want to do in VR. So really you just want a 2080 to be able to turn supersampling on so it actually looks good.

More importantly you want a good CPU and modern mobo of this year and have a good base of processing.

Besides that please dont recomment WMR headsets to anyone. you'd be wasting their money and time and its not a usable system. I tried odyssey + and its not usable in like 60% of games due to controller mapping issues and many many many other niggles. Its just not a consumer ready product.

Like I said in an earlier post, theres more to things than resolution. A vive pro has horrible lenses from the original vive and the resolution doesnt mean crap, it still has screen door and lack of pop. Dont go by resolution. Everyother element from screen type to lenses is more important, and vive pro is pretty much a 1st gen headset its not that good, nowhere near index and Rift S. Also overpriced.

Im on a new Aorus Master mobo with a 9900k on a 2080 and am playing on ultra with super smooth frame rate. 200% supersampling photo realistic paradise. Its more so the Mobo and CPU making that possible. VR is very hungry for 5.0 gh and I have all 8 cores OC'd to 5.1.

Its not better than the rift S it has a lot of technical issues and is not a quality designed product.

a Vast majority of users have controller issues. on average the controllers only last 1k hours till needs to be replaced. So its about... a dollar buys you an hour worth of use till it breaks.

    Maybe next gen.

Most good graphic games cant run at 120hz anyway (some unoptimized loads with good graphics only run at 45fps with ASW) so its one advantage is a moot point.

The screen is in the same ballpark, but the problem with index is its lenses have more smearing and suffers from God rays while the Rift S almost totally eliminated god rays.

So the extra annoying god rays Index suffers from makes their tech specs a moot point too. Rift S just has the best end result feel and picture with no god rays and no screendoor and not ghosting (like on odyssey) and is just overall the best value for the money by far. The most crispy picture overall. (still dont know how John Carmack and crew did it lol)

Index also has issues with ergonomics where they are only good for throwing grenades but sacrifice everything else such are comfort and size. Their trigger buttons have weird travel wihich makes rapid shooting with guns awkward and their finger stuff actually adds nothing to gameplay at the expense of basic ergonomics. Its also buggy in a few other subtle ways and overall clunky. The Oculus Touch are the best controllers bar none and thats the main reason to seriously side with Oculus over any other reason is they have the best controllers which, in a way are everything.

Though its totally sold out everywhere for its normal 399$ price since before Christmas. Might have to hit up amazon or eBay price gougers or wait till replenished inventory.

Pimax is a bankrupt company. Nobody gets a pimax, its a gen 1 blurry ass garbage screen. Dumb comment saying people buy it if they have money lol.

Im jealous that you can play Subnautica with mods in VR for the first time. seriously 2nd best game ever of all time.

    beat saber
    Onward for mil sim
Brass Tactics arena demo Like AOE 2 in VR
if youre athletic do the Creed demo
poker stars is fun as hell and good mechanics
    Skyrim VR with mods
    Fallout 4 VR

    Virtamate
    WSS

    VR kanojo

Index is objectively better than the Rift S unless you think every reviewer is wrong. Wider FOV which is huge for immersion, high refresh rate, higher resolution, better controllers, more accurate tracking (outside in). Btw, are we really going to get into the audio quality here? No comparison.

Pimax is not bankrupt LOL. That's a ridiculous and unfounded statement. Check your facts. https://www.pimax.com/

You can install mods that let you get the custom songs out there made by modders.

    https://youtu.be/MsrDf3Ta2cU

Install like that and you’ll get access to all the songs. You have to redo that process every once in a while when there’s an update for the game.

Pretty sure the only reason this exists is to sell that overpriced VR kit Valve is selling. I mean think about it, without this game nobody would really be buying it. Can't say it's going to get me to buy it though.

Install like that and you’ll get access to all the songs. You have to redo that process every once in a while when there’s an update for the game.
Already repped ya a while back so can't.. but thank you. You've been so helpful, I literally got this thing on black friday and been letting my nephew play on it since.

So as far as spaces go should I have a spare room for it? I've been using a spare bedroom but then I started seeing youtube videos with people going all out with ceiling mounts, and for people not to hurt themselves.

No comparison.

Pimax is not bankrupt LOL. That's a ridiculous and unfounded statement. Check your facts. https://www.pimax.com/
Well objectively speaking is exactly where Rift S is better like I explained with the God Rays and the smear. Rift S does have the edge in certain tradeoffs even in the screen such as a bigger more comfortable sweet spot, less god rays, and less blurring on the perimeter. It has a larger sweet spot of focus, and a larger sweet spot of angle clarity (how sharp it looks in different angles as it sits on your head so you dont lose like 30% of your sharpness because its not on the perfect millimeter on your nose). I have seen the Index screen myself its nothing special compared to Rift S. They both look hella good man, and they both dunk on all the headsets that came before and are in a class of their own in terms of sharpness and overall clarity.

But Index does have flaws. Some are mission critical, such as RMA issues. Many reviewers do bring this stuff up and lots of people express these criticisms in more recent videos; both reviewers and community do as Ive been following the community and scene for about 5 years and Im in a lot of VR discords and chats lol. Reviewers and owners alike admit the faults of Index, im not sure what reviews youre referring to. Theres many criticisms out there. You can easily find gigantic reddit threads of people freaking out about Index RMAs (weeks in which they cant use their units) and getting controllers which also break again. Its kind of a huge backlash lol. Not only that but on a fundamental level Oculus has the best eco system. Steam VR is a bit buggy, unstable, clunky, and doesn't have many options, and weird controller mapping menus; its not as intuitive, well designed and automatic of a user experience. You cant play Oculus exclusives on Steam based headsets without a fly by night unstable barely supported community hack that only works some months of the year and breaks with each Steam VR update. While on Oculus you can play best of both worlds and Oculus SDK is just plain super smooth and efficient on any system.

Wider FOV isn't what you would think either, since that outer peripheral area is blurry on the Index so its not usable. It generally feels similar in Rift S. Its not "huge" for immersion at all. On the other hand Rift S has the biggest clarity "sweet spot" in VR where you can see sharpness while on Index you have to make sure its right on the money or it will look out of focus. So that sweet spot is much larger and more comfortable on the Rift S. Little things like that are very important for user experience. Thats why the Rift S is deceptively superior in picture in many ways. Again, the Oculus lenses are the best. Thats what matters. John Carmack is the epitome of genius. Oculus is the Apple of the VR world.

High refresh rate is cool but 120 is only used in "light" games with basic graphics. Either way 80fps is plenty smooth. Its very subtle. Its the one legitimate advantage in all this but its a minor and seldom used one. Its nice to have the versatility to use it when possible though so I will give it that. You cant enjoy that feature with good graphics though as no heavy games will run that fast in VR. Still nice option to have tho.

Higher resolution doesnt matter because the game resolution is supersampled and downscaled so Rift S is at a resolution that looks "photo realistic" enough and the actual screen resolution doesnt hold back the game resolution. Its not like on gaming monitors, it has more to do with the lens clarity and the quality of the sub pixels of the screen. (Rift S has 3 sub pixels per pixel, the main secret power of new gen 2 headsets, same with Index)

Controllers are actually way worse for multiple reasons stated above and more important than anything. They are too big, they are clunky, poorly designed and literally everyone hates them. Everyone agrees they wish they had Oculus Touch controllers as an option on their Index its a common meme, and they are considered the gold standard by everyone in the VR world. Index controllers even have legacy support issues while on the other hand Rift S is fully compatible because their controllers profile remained unchanged all the way back to CV1 days so the support goes back to the dawn of VR while Index needs all developers to update the games for Index support which is impossible therefore the end user suffers with bad experience with the backlog of VR. Index controller are neither compatible with HTC vive or Oculus legacy, and its almost as bad and non existent as WMR control support, its like a wild land. Everyone says its a huge hassle and downside of Index ownership. You would not want to be stuck with those controllers. The finger hand part is gimmicky and useless for immersion and forces your hand in a position that is too low to manipulate the thumb stick lmao. Rift lets you do enough hand gestures while also having the sticks close and natural. On index people can barely reach the joysticks when holding the controller normally. Lots of issues people complain about all the time.

Tracking is not more accurate there are tradeoffs In Index you have occlusion from the satellites which means your body has to not be in the way. This is horrible in shooters when you are turning around and then youre worried you cant aim the gun because your body is in between the satellites. Its also immersion breaking because you are aware there is a sweet spot so you always think about where you are. With Rift S you never think about it. Its always working perfectly. John Carmack made the most crazy evolutions in inside out tracking after release and made satellites pointless. There are tests that show in beat saber Rift S has higher fidelity than outside in tracking so the system has less "travel" and is higher fidelity since theres less processing chain. Just things you haven't thought through I know...

Audio quality is cools except for the fact that the speakers commonly fuk up and break and one gets quieter than the other with common use LMAAAOOOO Rift S users can put on headphones easily since theres no bulky headphones to remove so we can have the virtualized rim speakers which portray 3d extremely well (just not as loud) or we can throw on some Sennheisers and its done.

Either way you look at it theres tradeoffs, none of which are worth triple the price on the part of Index, which that we can agree on.

And as for Pimax.. lol https://www.reddit.com/r/Pimax/comme...ncial_trouble/
That also doesnt change the fact they have gen 1 screens with horrific screen door, ghosting and God rays so they are no longer relevant, no gen 1 or gen 1.5 headsets (odyssey, Vive Pro) are. Not to mention they are buggy and cheap quality trash software and hardware wise in comparison to the big dogs.

sure buddy no problem I enjoy VR topics.

I would say that a ceiling mount is a luxury but not a necessity. If its setup comfortably it can boost immersion and reduce tangling the wire but it also has to reach enough so the person can crouch down or get close to the ground or whatever. But you kinda get used to just throwing the cable over your shoulder and just forgetting about it the more you use it the more "subconscious cable management" happens just instinctually.

The other feature of Rift S is that it requires only a 2 second setup and remember all the rooms you've been in automatically afterwards so you can actually just use it where you guys feel like it anytime anywhere theres some safe space.

beat the game 2 days ago and im still not over it... valve changed the gaming industry yet again. Its such a nutty ending, with game engine complete they have the foundation to build on for the next games. Valve swore off building a game and a game engine at the same time. reasons hl2 took so long and they scrapped so much of the hl2 cause of trying to get the game and the game engine right. When source 2 was put in to dota 2 at the end of 2015 development for HL:A begun in 2016 and took 4 years so the next HL could be 2-3 years? depending if its another VR which would probably push it to another 1 year so 4 years on the safer side. Either way I truly hope this is a turning point for valve, to finally start getting us the consumer excited about stuff again. Hope tf2 gets a whole new engine to go with this as well.

    dumb comment.

Theres a whole slew of games like I mentioned in an earlier post. Especially Subnautica alone (if the person hasn't played the pancake version) is reason enough to get a used Rift S (with a new replacement VR Covers cover of course lol)

Subnautica in VR is way better than even Half Life Alyx. And all the rest of the many games such as Fallout 4 or New Vegas with mods or racings sims like dirt rally and assetto corsa or tons of stuff to do in general.

Been playing in a esports VR league in Onward with team practices and seasons of league games. Its been keeping me with stuff to do for years.

That comment may have been true like 4 years ago but its stupid to think that now.

I never got into VR tbh so you're right I am still looking at VR like it was just released and non vr subnautica is legit. Where can I look up a list of VR games or is everything on the steam platform?

I wanna get something cheap to start off with and from reading this thread Oculus Rift S's best bang for the buck even for a starter budget VR ya?

Yeah Rift S for sure, and like someone above posted they may be find-able on offer up since they are sold out everywhere else.

If you could find a decent looking one and confirm the lenses and cameras are in perfect condition you could clean it down really well, disinfect it, and get a fresh new VR cover for it and it should be a great bang for the buck so you dont touch the same face pad as someone else.

I would start by just google and YouTube "top xx vr games" and best vr games and look for titles that you see over and over mentioned on multiple lists then you know its a consensus a lot of people liked that title. Try ones that interest you. Theres quite a few hidden gems too. The other thing people dont realize is that all VR games are just as available for free to try out for free on IGG as any other game which for VR is perfect to weed through the more shallow games to find stuff you like and test before you buy.

Money isn't an obstacle for me but if it's just better overall, then at the price I'll at least give it a shot. Worst case scenario I don't care for it for some reason and just sell it and get the Index anyway. Win/win.

i was going to get the first gen rift for 150 but found the newer gen for 300, if you can find the rift s for about the same price, well worth it. with built in cameras it makes it much much easier to game on VR
