The better we do at mitigation methods, the longer this will last. Flattening of the curve, by definition, increases the duration of an epidemic/pandemic of a communicable disease. Rather than having the virus burn through the population at an alarmingly fast rate, we will instead provide a steady but limited “fuel source”. This will help ensure that people who need advanced care (respiratory support therapy) will get it and the medical system will not be completely overwhelmed. How much that will reduce the real mortality rate is anyone’s guess. Our medical system is not overwhelmed yet, but there are still fatalities so we can’t pretend that currently available medical interventions will save everyone.

The asymptomatic rate of this disease is currently estimated to be around 25%. 55% will have mild symptoms. 18% of negative test results are false negative. About 5% of cases (usually within high risk populations) are requiring advanced treatment and it looks like 20% of those result in death.

I personally believe that this virus will burn through most of the US population before the end of summer, regardless of our current actions. This strain will likely run its course through the population before a vaccine is developed/available. That’s not to say it won’t become endemic and re-emerge seasonly similar to influenza viruses, which having a vaccine (and herd immunity from the first wave) would likely help reduce negative outcomes.

I’m dealing with this everyday, answering questions, responding to suspected and confirmed cases, creating procedures and mitigation methods for critical infrastructure. The main objective that I try to get people to understand is THEY are in charge of their exposure potential. Personal safety measures are like a volume control on a stereo, and only the individual can control their risk/exposure potential (volume control), which should be done based on their risk factors for complications.

There are two methods of transmission. Direct and indirect. Direct is physical exposure to airborne droplet spray from an infectious individual. Protection depends on the situation. Isolation, social distancing and in some cases PPE is necessary (PPE being real masks that offer protection, not a scarf wrapped around your face to keep your own respiratory secretions contained). Indirect transmission is when we infect ourselves by touching a surface contaminated by the virus then touching a mucosal membrane (eyes, nose, mouth) or touching the inside of your fabric face wrap with contaminated hands when putting it on..Secondary transmission can be most effectively mitigated by effective hand-washing before touching mucus membranes, eating food etc.

I am working, usually 16+ hr days right now. My next door neighbors are just finishing a really awesome $250k second level addition on their house. Unfortunately, they are now both out of work. The dynamics of this entire situation are hard to get a handle on. My background in Safety and Public Health with Masters level work in pathogenic microbiology /communicable disease might alter my opinion of this, but the fact is the human species has successfully eradicated ONE disease, Polio (would be nice to add smallpox in there, but we can’t cause a lot of countries have it for a bioweapon, Russian labs are believed to have sold a lot of it on the black market during the collapse of the Soviet Union). Another interesting tidbit, a large potion of human genetic code is actually viral DNA, the human species might not even exist without viruses. But they have also killed more people throughout our history than is even imaginable. It’s not their intent, it’s actually counterproductive to their survival to kill a host, but unfortunately that’s what happens sometimes.

This virus appears to have a relatively low mortality rate. Unfortunately because it is new we don’t have any immunity and its “sneaky” with mild and asymptomatic cases, that it is very effective in transmission. It will spread faster and with a greater saturation than say seasonal influenza. We will win this battle, and I hope learn a lot about preparedness and response, because at anytime there could be a virus that kills at much much higher percentages.

No, the quarantine will make this last much longer. The hope is, if we "flatten the curve" people will get sick at a slower rate and the healthcare system won't be overwhelmed.

    ^^ That.

The better we do at slowing the spread the longer it will last. It will save some lives (from COVID-19) without a doubt, but it will come at a cost that is yet to be determined.... Think of it like a fire, instead of throwing all the wood in at once and having a roaring fire, we are going to slowly add wood until we run out. The fire will burn longer but won't reach the same peak temperature that it would have if all the wood were burned at once...

It only means, Gov is going to tighen the lock even further. "Never waste a crisis" to control. Only the ones who didn't get it, will now have to suffer, and perhaps take a Gov created vaccine? Bando should take it first and see if his lifts suffer.

Corbi, apparently new evidence is rising, this WAS here in January. This thing takes a while to "get going".

I read somewhere yesterday that now they are thinking it was here in late November.

It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.

It's easy to not be afraid of tigers when you're sitting in your living room watching a television program about tigers. When you're in the jungle where the tigers are, it's quite a different story.

My workout partner in the gym and BJJ lives alone in a small apartment. He's 36 and suffers from PTSD from an exploding EOD that gave him a brain injury and killed another in his unit. He's having a hard time with the isolation and the disruption of his normal routine.

He said to me yesterday via text that "It was almost easier to sleep in the sand in Iraq, at least I had someone to talk to". I text him everyday and try to keep his hopes/spirits up. He has a therapist and uses her often but I worry for others. Just thought I'd share as we have talked here of the unforeseen consequences of this lock down.

    ^ for sure.
I can’t imagine being younger, single, no kids, without an “essential” job during this. I’d probably die from liver failure from drinking excessively everyday. The adjustment has been really easy for my kids 8 and almost 7. They miss their friends, school and extracurricular activities, but other than not going with me shopping it’s not much different. Now that stores are saying 1 family member / no kids WTF do single parents do? High school - young adults would probably be a pretty hard transition as well. I can’t imagine being stuck in a 1 bedroom apartment or something yikes. No wonder the stores that are open appear to be more crowded than without a stay at home order...

About all you can do for your buddy is stay in contact etc.

I too have wondered how people who lives alone are coping being sheltered in place. If they have existing issues such as depression or, in Jtbny's buddy's case, PTSD, I can't imagine not being able to go about your normal routine that keeps you grounded. Many have used going to the gym as part of their therapy but that is no longer an option, especially if you live in a small apartment and have no workout equipment. Hell, even if you do have equipment many will miss that human connection, the camaraderie, that makes each day livable.

This has definitely affected so many people in so many different ways; mentally, physically, financially. Could have a long lasting effect for many.

You don't need Covid for that to happen. A few years ago a manager where I was working connected into a conf call with a lot of us present, from his laptop working from home on his kitchen table. He was wearing just pants and was a reasonably obese and very hairy older man, I don't know what happened but about 10 minutes into the call he accidentally added video then there was about 5 seconds until he realized then he leapt on the laptop and shut the lid and left the call. It was a running joke for some time!

I still can't frog stand (crow stand), I constantly fall backwards or forwards and narrowly avoid face-planting but today Covid has taught me to cut my own hair with a beard trimmer (all hair trimmers sold out on Amazon and elsewhere). It took longer than I expected (maybe as beard trimmers are small) but wasn't at all difficult, as long as same length short all over is the goal.
Faith in Jesus first and faith in squats second.
Then other details will start to slot themselves into place.

I also have a mirror behind me in my work from home setup. Yesterday I was in a meeting and thought it would be really comfy to put my legs up on the table, since they can't see it anyway, right? Wrong, you can totally see it in the reflection. Moreover you could totally see I was wearing my fuzzy furry slippers. Then when I looked closely, I realized you can see my bodybuilding trophies on the shelf, which to the untrained eye just look like statues of naked women with really perky bewbs and azzes.

Friday I got the promotion I have been waiting for years, so this week I have been trying really hard to look professional so... that went well.
