It is really awkward how human mind ranks threats. Developed Asian counties (not talking about China's numbers but SK, Taiwan and Japan) are doing better probably partly due to their experience with SARS. Where I grew up we always knew that there was a earthquake risk. It is one think knowing it, but it still completely (and permanently) changed how I think about it when I experienced a magnitude 7.7 earthquake. I am not defending (especially leaders) those people but it is a common bias unfortunately.

Japan and sk are doing well because theyre well desciplned...china is doing chit....dont believe what they say/post...... the chinese shot...welded and killed corona contractors...... as to us .... we arent descplined/smart nor are we a totaliterian dictatorship regime to do what china did
When the corona started ...heard people and some posters here saying ", this is our freedom... no one can tell me what to do"
Inmean how fukcing stupid and retarded you have to be to think that way....thats why i feel 0 empathy with 80% of the idiots who contracted the corona virus in the states...its their own doong and stupidity this happened to them

This is exactly why the US is having the amount of infections and deaths they are. Italy and other places did the same thing. I've seen people on IG in the States still clubbing, having dinner with friends, etc. In Asian countries they take stuff seriously and actually listen to their government and experts rather than saying "but it's my right to NOT do that!"
Here in Canada we have pockets that are bad but people are mostly listening, probably about 80-90% as opposed to maybe 50% in the US. Our problem is that our government hasn't shut down most things fast enough. There are still active construction sites FFS and up until yesterday pretty much every retail store was still open.

People have shorter memories than you think. It's going to be bad for awhile and these things will be impacted and take a little time to come back. But as soon as people "can" forget . . . they will. Look how hard it is to get people to stay home while this is in peak panic mode. People will flock back to group exercise and gyms once they can reopen. And bars/restaurants will fill up again. Some people will shy away from crowds longer term, but not the herd in general.
There will be a vaccine and everyone will feel bulletproof again.*MFC Elder Statesmen Cabinet Crew*

Hey guys anywhere to see who is considered serious/critical in the US? Worldmeter has it for the entire world, but not for the US. Almost 40,000 across the globe.

What should we do about the grocery stores and hardware stores? I drive by both everyday and they are JAM packed, like entire parking lot is full. The cell phone data in my county showed a sharp decrease in traffic, but that is just all the vacationers going back home I think. Grocery stores finally have shields up for their workers. Those people I feel as bad as the healthcare workers for. I couldn't imagine making 9 bucks an hour and thinking you might get sick and die every single day.

So US daily deaths are currently at 1,321. Total US deaths at 7,392. chalup you taking your ban on your bet now?
I hope there will be.
There are viruses we haven't been able to make a vaccine for yet, then there are constantly mutating viruses like influenza that have hit or miss vaccines each year. Then there are never changing viruses we get a vaccine for and that's basically it like measles or polio (but that took awhile...)

Already posted asking to wait until my state is off quarantine. I'm stuck at the house for at least the rest of the month and would like to continue posting until it's lifted. Obviously I was way wrong and will take the ban regardless, but this is one outlet for me right now and would like to keep it until I can work again.

Then don't take the ban. It's fine. I kept ban betting people because the thread was flooded with incredibly ignorant and sometimes stupid claims that were in no way ever going to be reality, all downplaying the virus, downplaying the threat to life, pretending people weren't going to die, contributing to people acting like douchebags and failing to social distance and all the other things...but you came around on that and admitted you were wrong so we can move on just fine. It's too bad a couple of the others didn't man up and put anything behind their BS. At least you "put up" and are standing behind it now (mods no ban we're good)
I'm also sure everybody can see why I didn't take your initial claim that we'd be under 5k US deaths by December as merely a difference of opinion but rather a blatantly false prediction I knew was wrong. Unfortunate as that is.

It's never a sure thing or fast, typically . . . but in this case all we seem to hear is how similar this one is to SARS1 and MERS and so everyone had a head start based on research into vaccines for those. Some company will come up with one rapidly and it will go into mass innoculation programs and (whether it works or not) people will feel protected.
Just imagining this playing out like the Spanish Flu--but with better communication, medicine and technology at the world's disposal. Novel coronavirus that knocks the world on its azz for a year or two and then it kind of fades away never to be seen in those numbers again. That is, until some goofball in a China wet market unleashes the next one by butchering a salamander next to a pangolin or whatever--hopefully not for another 100 years.*MFC Elder Statesmen Cabinet Crew*

Speaking of the Spanish flu, I understand that it really started in March, faded a bit over the summer and came back worse the next winter. Even the fast hopes don't have a vaccine out by next season. If it does seasonal.
Unfortunately there is a good argument to be made for how and why these zoonosis events are becoming more common and the trend will continue/worsen. And overall our ability to travel and transport viruses is only getting better as is our population density and close quarters living

Well when it first started I just didn't want to believe it period, hoping that the numbers would magically stop going up out of nowhere and i'd continue life as normal. Add on the fact my bosses from both jobs were saying the media is blowing this up and it isn't THAT big a deal and voila, that was my attitude. Also was thinking this would go away with the warmer weather like the flu, when in reality there is zero proof of that and it isn't going anywhere for a long, long time. It's super depressing to be honest man. I was making almost 1300 a week between both my jobs, and that's kickass money for where I live. I doubt i'll ever make that again in a restaurant.
edit: why can't i quote people? I get access denied when I try it.I was always looking at the finger pointing at

Yeah, the second wave was the big hitter with Spanish Flu. Mutated version spread by infected WWI soldiers, apparently?

disagreed
remember...America forgets and moves on quickly from things.
I give it around a 2-3 month grace period after the day lockdowns are lifted where people will be cautious and wear masks and gloves still. after that, people will move on, plan vacations until a next wave potentially hits.

China probably has their very best equipment 3+ deep for the top CCP officials, the second best or rest of the best getting shipped overseas as a flex, and whatever is leftover (at best) for the vast majority of their own population they don't GAF about. I'll bet the vents they send to the US are all very good, because politics. And I wouldn't want to be the governor deciding whether or not to accept them. It's a sht situation with no winning decision, unless you can see the future and know if you'll need them and if so how they'll work.

I haven't posted ITT in a while but I think it so fuking funny how quickly the media went from, "Don't wear a mask, it won't help you" to "For the love of god please, make a mask out of whatever household items you have!!"

Yeah I don't think we need to jeopardize any lives but it's a serious wake up call for the nation. A LOT of hospitals are close to being broke right now because they are only doing essential surgery's and nobody is going to the ER because they don't want to be around people who possibly have the virus. Our nation and life is going to be completely different.

We could see 2000-3000 people dying a day just in NY in two weeks. They already have 10,400 infected showing and its only 12.
