Sounds really bad...but then you realize it’s 300 out of 4,500 that are in the hospital, which is promising.
France now has 4,500 confirmed cases of coronavirus contamination, the Director General of Health announced on Saturday evening. In Paca, 279 cases are positive, while the first round of municipal elections is being held on Sunday.
More than 300 patients are in serious condition and are in resuscitation, Salomon added, noting that more than 50% of them are under the age of 60.
I imagine the elderly probably succumb faster while the younger who reach that point can fight through it, though it will take a while. The longer it goes the more the numbers will probably lean towards the younger. This would be especially true if anyone reaches the Italy approach. Still sad, but not as bad as the initial reaction of hearing “half of hospitalizations are under 60” would suggest.+positive crew+

That's not "in hospital", it's "in intensive care". Unfortunately.
On top of those who are in hospital but will never enter ICU, most ICU patients spend 1.5 days in regular hospital per day spent in ICU. Typical ICU stay for coronavirus patients is ten days. So figure these patients who recover are taking up hospital beds for nearly a month.Nah, fukk that. I’m not doing that.

The translated page on France doesn’t say that, it just says there’s more than 300 severe cases requiring ventilation. I’m assuming anything less than severe means mild or asymptomstic and wouldn’t require hospitalization. Kind of worded in a way that could be taken different ways, but that may be due to my translator.

I have family in Bangladesh, just next to India. The government's equating COVID-19 to a bad flu. Only a few confirmed cases there. But people have a strong suspicion that the government is trying suppress as much information as possible, so there may be more cases and deaths than there may appear.

Why do people keep comparing us to and/or fearing us turning out like Italy?
They are a much smaller and more densely populated country. Their population is also like ~10 years older on average.Reps to all BJJ/grappling/MMA bros.

People are concerned about it turning out like Italy because it's turning out like Italy.
Anyone being ventilated is in ICU. It's a pretty significant intervention that usually requires ongoing sedation. That's definitely a translation issue. If you can't breath on your own, you're in critical condition, not what we call "severe" in English. Severe is a larger category that most often means "in hospital" but not "critical" (essentially "dying right now and has to be helped ASAP").Last edited by ANumber1; 03-14-2020 at 06:50 PM.

They are not a small country, much of the US's population lives where it's high density, and...who cares what the density is? Lower population density correlates to, among other things, longer distances to hospitals and fewer options for other hospitals if the one is past capacity.
Over 50% of ICU patients in France are under 60 and most of the Netherlands ICU patients are under 50, so...what's that about age?
Italy is the farthest ahead, that is, they started the pandemic of infections earlier than, any other transparent nation. We can't trust **** that comes out of China, or Iran. We can Italy. We can also look at South Korea for an example of what real social distancing and widespread testing can do

I got a sore throat and dry cough. Extremely mild though. The most mild cold I've ever had. I'm hoping it was coronavirus.

not downplaying the severity of this virus specifically to elderly and those with health conditions..but let’s be real..this **** has been going around the US since December.
does anyone not remember back in late Dec and early Jan when tons of people were sick with fever, coughs, etc for like 2-3 weeks and testing negative for flu? hopefully this thing is like the flu and will die once weather changes.
