There's got to be a balance. Has to be a balance.

We have to find a happy medium of both or it really doesn't matter which way it goes - it's bad fuking news and dead people.

That's probably when it will be worst lol

But it will vary by region/city and the fed gov has done IMO a good job leaving most decisions on actual closures and daily operations to the states so just changing the fed support to say "do what you believe is best for your jurisdiction with a lean towards opening up" would not be uncalled for at some point coming up...but not yet because too many people are too stupid to comprehend that it's about what's coming (still) than what's here right now. So let's give it, shouldn't be more than a week or two depending on area, to get a feel for what 'is' instead of 'is coming' before making those reversal calls

I think his panel will talk him out of being that aggressive. If they do it, they better have a plan in place for what to do when it starts going sideways.

I do think he'll push hard to open things up sooner rather than later. But probably premature to start talking a date like that just out of "spitballing".

    Italy :
For the third day in a row, the infection rate here is slowing.

Some 54,030 people in Italy are confirmed to have coronavirus – that’s an increase of just over 7% on Monday's figures. It’s the slowest rise since the outbreak began and is now starting to look like a downward trend in new infections.

I guess trump needs to keep up the quarantine though to prevent Italy like situation. Seems it’s already occurring in NY tho. He seems pretty gung ho about getting ppl back to work ASAP though

But yeah I meant fear with regards to what trump is now saying

So, your opinion is that Italy's precautionary measures were too extreme? Because they are finally just now seeing only about 4,700 new cases and 700 ish deaths per day?

No I just think Italy was in a unique situation given their demographic and population density. Obviously a complete lockdown was warranted there. I guess similar extreme measures have to be taken across the entire US to prevent spread from places like NY.

Just seems insane to shut down interior states for a couple deaths. Every location has to work together for the overall good I suppose.

Better safe than sorry. Just seems a lot of the hype around all of this is tending downwards

this is different, balance doesnt exist in this situation, drastic measures do..... people and specially the rich and powerful still want things to get back to what it was pre corona............. this is a global situation....... things will not get back to what it is , atleast not for the time being, not for 6 month atleast -24 month at most

if trump proceed to open everything so things could go back to normal......... we will be facing a catastrophe on a nation wide level.......... imagine....... 100k sick people pouring into hospitals everyday..... do you know what will happen to the doctors? to the nurses ? to the medical community? they will break mentally , emotionally and psychologically

We need to deploy the army , thats our only chance .......... everyone incharge is treating this as a poker player when they should be looking at it from a chess player perspective .... and not any chess play but magnus carlson style.... thinking 20 steps ahead

I think there's unprecedented pressure to find a workable solution that implodes the economy the least . . . it's already hosed but it can get a lot worse and for a lot longer. The shutdowns have allowed some catch-up and time to work through some things. Tough balancing act. Other countries have done the "we'll let it run its course" approach only to find themselves phukked and scrambling to shut down and settle an overrun healthcare system (Italy, Spain--now the UK). So you have to be careful if you think the cure is worse than the disease and you go too fast and too far on reversing policy only to have it blow up spectacularly.

But you also can't keep pulling pins on grenades while sitting in your own foxhole for several months just in case it works. Better have some kind of workable plan for what happens next for whatever you decide.

No, it's because people got over the initial shock.

The number of cases per day are still accelerating. The number of deaths is still accelerating.

Is the US approach extreme? Depends. Social distancing works. Theorectically, proper hygiene with extreme social distancing and quarantining should knock R0 < 1, and that's when we'd see the curve bend and the end of the tunnel. That's easier said than done when we still have inadequate testing, and people refuse to take social distancing seriously or don't have the discipline to do so.

The damage to the economy and everything else that follows is definitely a worry though. I think social distancing and hygiene should be core, but we may have to think about further optimizing the strategy to create the least amount of overal damage on multiple factors.

The time to shut things down hard was 2 weeks ago (at least). At this point, all we can do is try to get the health sector as ramped up as possible. We're in it now and I don't see any significant flattening of any curves in our near future. Elderly and those at particularly high risk need to stay the fk home and let the rest of the country get on with it. Frankly, the direction we're heading financially as a country scares me way more than this virus does.

Yeah, the economic repercussions are indeed the most frightening. But at the end of the day, government is ideally meant to protect its citizens, and most would agree life > money. However, when the economy starts taking a hit, so to does personal finances which equates to mental health issues, poor nutrition, poor health, crime, and more death. So like you said, a perfect balancing is the optimal solution and required.

Shutting everything down indefinitely is going to have more disastrous results for society, and therefore people’s health in the long term.

My job is relatively safe in the legal field, but I have a child on the way. if it’s not, I have no clue how I’m going to pay my bills / provide proper nutrition for my child etc.

i don't think long term quarintine for americans is really feasible unless people start dying en-masse, it seems like we're the only place that half-heartedly committed to it and we're already considering backing off from that...we have the 3rd highest amount of cases in the world and the two above us went full lockdown to contain this...the next few weeks are going to be interesting

Did anyone hear the new rules about take out/delivery food? Apparently now, you have to Lysol the package it comes in and microwave the food to ensure all viruses are dead. Is anyone doing that?

I think the consensus is that those under 30 are still at risk, and not invincible. Still may require hospital resources to get better. No one is saying that the proportion of dead sub 40s even is going to be anything more than 5-10%, more that they shouldn’t be getting sick so as not to clog the hospitals and further infect the vulnerable

I' just took the time to read that. I wish they would have taken the time to go into how we could actually implement it even if they said they weren't going to get into policy recommendations. It doesn't seem feasible to have the over 65 crowd distancing themselves without some new social services. They're still going to need to shop and go to Doctors appointments, etc. Interesting math to say the least
