Yeah it's great for Italy and Spain that they are slowing down, but where they are right now is still not good even it was worse a week or two ago, and we are behind them such that, as the new model out yesterday for IHME indicates, and as pretty much every expert indicates, it's still expected to get worse before better...daily deaths are still expected to double or triple from where they are right now before it gets better

Secretary of the Navy travels to Guam, addresses the crew of the U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt over the public address system, cursing, criticizing Joe Biden, and calling their captain "too stupid to be a commanding officer of a ship like this" if he didn't realize his concerns about the COVID-19 outbreak would leak to the media.
Recordings, complete with the crew booing him, subsequently leak to the media, prompting him to object that his words were meant for the crew.

Right now, all we're seeing is some hope that it is getting worse more slowly. We're still reporting far more new cases per day than have recovered in total.
The deaths from infections generally take a week to ten days to show up in the data, so there will be some rough days ahead with this many new cases still flowing in.Last edited by ANumber1; 04-06-2020 at 05:09 PM.

Petition calling for resignation of WHO Director-General nears 720k signatures
https://www.jpost.com/International/...natures-623626
Excerpt:
"The main point of contention was Tedros's failure to designate the coronavirus outbreak in China a global health emergency in late January.
The petition alleged that instead of investigating and independently verifying the number of deaths and those infected within the Chinese provinces, Tedros simply relied on the word of the Chinese government, which initially downplayed the outbreak within their country in order to stave off the negative economic effects that were to come with the viral spread, apathetic to worldwide public health implications.
"A lot of us are really disappointed, we believe WHO is supposed to be politically neutral. Without any investigation, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus solely believes the death and infected numbers that the Chinese government provided," the petition stated, adding that Taiwan "should not be excluded from WHO" due to its political contentions with mainland China, alleging that this shows favor to the Chinese government.
Deputy Prime Minister of Japan Taro Aso made mention of the petition, adding that its release came on the backdrop of worries that WHO would have to change its name to the "Chinese Health Organization.""

Turkey: "Erdoğan also said the sale of face masks is now prohibited and that masks would be instead given for free at supermarkets or distributed to citizens' homes by the Turkish Post and Telegraph Organization (PTT).
“Our governorates have already begun sending free masks through PTT," he said, adding: "We have enough stocks and production plans for our entire population until the pandemic is over.""

Bill Gates to Spend Billions on Coronavirus Vaccine Development
https://www.wsj.com/articles/bill-ga...nt-11586124716
It's discussed elsewhere, but he's funding 7 factories (already started) to run up the 7 top vaccine candidates and then just scrap all but the 1-2 best (hopefully) after they get far enough

Here's the transcript.
I'm having a hard time reconciling that he thought whining like a bitch about everyone hating him now and Joe Biden calling him a criminal and the media having an agenda would inspire the crew to side with him against the captain they'd just cheered off the ship. His underlying point isn't even wrong, but he's so tone deaf it's kind of beautiful.
Oh, you love your captain? Well, he's stupid and a traitor, and you have to respect me.

To be fair, "criticizing joe biden" = " The former Vice President of the United States Joe Biden suggested just yesterday that my decision was criminal. I assure you it was not."
Edit: So NYT said "attacking former Vice President Joe Biden, "
This is the media bias we hear about. THat's it right there.
This phrase:
" The former Vice President of the United States Joe Biden suggested just yesterday that my decision was criminal. I assure you it was not."
is not attacking joe biden
This is why I hate clicking on any mainstream media links. Always pushing agendas and misrepresenting and misleading'
Fuk the NYT and fuk the media in general they are a cancer to society and basically just make everything worse (intentionally and with a yuge bias)

I tend to agree that "criticize" is maybe the wrong word, but also, considering the context of a larger tirade about partisan media, I don't think the intent is really ambiguous.
Given how much time he spends focusing on chain of command and the media noise not being part of it in any way, even acknowledging what a candidate says about it on the news seems ill-conceived, defensive, and just weird in what was already a display of some pretty questionable judgment.Nah, fukk that. I’m not doing that.

See my edit. NYT actually said he "attacked" joe biden. What a load
I don't think it's wrong to acknowledge a public callout by a former vice president just to say "I assure you I was not"
That's all he said, "I assure you I was not"
That's not attacking anybody in any way.
I gotta stop clicking on any NYT sht
Edit: I also view it more as was said "former vice president" not "some potential presidential election runner". Biden is the former VP, he was really really high up in the chain of command and what he says is worthy of acknowledging, guy was literally a heartbeat away from commander in chief for 8 years. I think it's more than fair to say "former VP says I was criminal, I was not"Last edited by Farley1324; 04-06-2020 at 05:52 PM.

Yeah, and that's fair. He did go on to claim that Biden didn't have his facts straight, which I do think is a clear criticism, but not one worth pointing out.
Either way, I'm interested to hear the recording and get the temperature of the room. He mentions the virus not being something they've dealt with for a hundred years, but they haven't had too many good old fashioned mutinies for a hundred years, either, and treating popular officers with that level of disrespect in front of other officers and enlisted men - including overriding the officers tasked with the investigation - is how you end up with outright disorder.
It's also worth noting that Trump had initially claimed it was "terrible" for Crozier to write a letter, because "this isn't a class on literature", but now is claiming he's going to look into interceding in some way. He was obviously removed because the truth getting out was bad optics, and there seems to be some surprise that that has, in turn, made the optics even worse. Modly flying out to demand respect like a child and tell the crew they've failed to notice that they're the ones who are being embarrassed is pretty close to the worst reaction I can realistically imagine.Nah, fukk that. I’m not doing that.

It's definitely still a cluster every which way. Just wish the media would push agendas and fan the flames to make it as bad as possible (which you know they wouldn't have done if it were 4 years ago...)

IDK how I missed this until just now. April 6 update on worldometers includes
"An estimated additional 180 - 195 deaths per day occurring at home in New York City due to COVID-19 are not being counted in the official figures. "Early on in this crisis we were able to swab people who died at home, and thus got a coronavirus reading. But those days are long gone. We simply don't have the testing capacity for the large numbers dying at home. Now only those few who had a test confirmation *before* dying are marked as victims of coronavirus on their death certificate. This almost certainly means we are undercounting the total number of victims of this pandemic," said Mark Levine, Chair of New York City Council health committee [source]
A study by disease modelers at the University of Texas at Austin states that "Given the low testing rates throughout the country, we assume that 1 in 10 cases are tested and reported. If a county has detected only 1 case of COVID-19, there is a 51%
chance that there is already a growing outbreak underway"

I read that about the ones dying at home, Levine uses it for justification of possibly needing to use the parks as temporary body storage
Here, he lists 200-215 per day

I think the only true way to get an idea of how much covid is killing is comparing monthly averages vs this month

This is obvious, as 80% of cases are asymptomatic or so mild that the infected person doesn't care. There are a few serious cases missed, but many, many more that don't affect anyone. This is why the real fatality rate is going to be lowered again and again until it settles close to what the many other diseases would be without the presence of vaccines and prior knowledge of it (ie... people stay home when they have it).
Lots of these deaths are people in nursing homes or very close to death, the same groups that die from most illnesses. The difference is you don't visit a nursing home if you know that you have an illness.
I'd wager this virus is pretty much everywhere and a good portion of the population has gotten it and recovered. The healthcare system in the US noted unusually high levels of flu like illnesses for a while this flu season, likely linked to this.

Looking back, it appears you can draw a downward trend line for daily new cases from March 26 for sure and maybe kinda from March 21. Another two weeks...that seems reasonable looking at that. They have to get back out sometime, they "went in" awhile before anywhere in the US did, another two weeks...that's a long time.
Their number of active cases is still currently rising though (slower than it was, but, rising nonetheless), hopefully that changes by two weeks from now?

Pretty idiotic way to go about whatever the hell he was trying to do. He said the captain was either too naive or stupid to think that his method of communication would get to the public and got canned for it. Then he turned around and gave a boneheaded speech that he should have known would get recorded and distributed.
Should have just left it at "I know you loved your captain . . . but you cannot go outside the chain of command like he did and it put resources and the nation's security at risk. Cannot be allowed and so he was relieved."*MFC Elder Statesmen Cabinet Crew*
