I am reminding myself of the purpose of these workouts in an effort to placate the disturbances in my head due to the impact of the pandemic.
-keep the body moving
-burn some cals
-preserve muscle tissue
-sweat, elevate heart rate
-maintain mental health through exercise and nutrition
-do something every day
-continue to lose fat
-don't cave and do nothing just because I can't do it the way I like or that I'm used to
I'm not sleeping well lately.

Same ole, same ole. Still training. Pretty well appointed home gym saves me from the “pandemic gym blues”.
Been experimenting a lot with resistance bands lately. Seems like a good deal for an old coot like me. Joints love it.
Good to see that you are still addicted to the iron. There is no cure ya know?
Looking forward to seeing more of your unique perspective on training and life in general.
Reps are like money. Spend some, make some.

I think you've paid your dues enough that you can lift however you damn well feel. Resistance bands or yoga, as long as you're healthy and happy doing it. TBH, I don't want to be lifting 400 lbs of almost anything when I get older. We get saner as we get older.
Yep, still hooked but can't seem to get a fix lately and the long term isn't looking that great neither. Different avenues will be pursued to reach the same goal.
That statement about my unique perspective has me curious...what is so unique about my perspective? What am I bringing to the table that's interesting? (no compliment fishing). Feel free to criticize.
And as for your perspective it shows up in that quote about reps. That's something that would never enter my mind.
I would add to that though, that you should never save a rep.
Stay safe and sane.

Your experience in the mental health field, along with “Tales from the Fitness Factory”, liberally embellished with historical references make your observations interesting to read. Pardon me if I give you a half-assed compliment but I did it anyway.
Sorry if my post was borderline psycho-babble, I didn’t intend it that way. I just appreciate those who squeeze weight training for all they can get.
I’ll leave you with the best training advice I ever got-“pick up your fukking weights kid”. 1962

Thanks man. FTR, I did not liberally embellish very much in my Tales thread. You know gym folks from those days, they were f'ing nuts.
I like psycho babble. Use all you want.
I'd like to think of myself as somewhat of a specialist when it comes to the mental aspect of lifting and bodybuilding...both bb'ing and psychology have been a passion of mine since my teens. And from what I can see on the internet, not many people look at the importance of that.
Advice heeded, appreciated and will be remembered.

"pick up your fukking jugs kid" -dedicated to Big Joe Harrington 1913-1983
April 8, 2020
30 min. Recumbant bike
Arms
straight arm DB Curl
20 reps x 10 sets x 10 lbs.
Jug Curls
6 reps x 1 set-left forearm pain, stopped
standing 1 arm behind the head DB Extension
20x10x10- I really got into a groove with these
Couch Dips (for Tri's)
6x3
Posing
Side Tricep, Yates style
3 sets x 20 secs/each
Front Double Bi
1 x 20 sec/each
-this does not actually work well for contracting the biceps but it took a set to try and then remember the secret to this pose is to "contract" the bicep rather than full on flexing of it.
So I did them 1 side at a time while making a pose out of it with my legs, mid section, and other arm.
1 arm "Classic" pose- I just made that name up, lol
3 sets x 20 secs/each
As I was watching the part of the '95 Arnold Classic on youtube it occurred to me that posing practice back in the day was absolutely exhausting.
A practice I had gotten out of in modern gyms, flexing after training.
So today I stayed true to my roots and posed after exercising.
I felt extremely confident that this workout was effective, pumps like crazy.
and 1 day after typing this my arms are sore and I'm one happy Fiend

30 Recumbant bike
Back
DB Dead lift
3x30x10
1 arm Jug Rows
3x20
Jug Shrugs
3x20
Posing
Rear Double Bicep
3 sets x 20 secs/each
Rear Lat Spread
3 sets x 20 secs/each
-I think I pulled my right lat
The bright side of "exercising" from home
-my joints are getting a much needed break
-it stirs the creative juices
-I already had a great mind muscle connection, this solitude has heightened it
-I can watch old bb'ing comps on youtube AND lift at the same time
-I live on the basement floor and can still drop the dumbbells
-there is less mental stress lifting lighter
-with no need to travel there are no idiots on the road to encounter going to the gym
-I don't need to make idle chit chat with anybody
I'm trying to stay positive here.
This exercising sh*t is working for me right now. I can see the fat loss, which has always been my primary goal.
In a time people are focused on what they can't do I'm trying to focus on what I can.
Stay safe folks!

Wisdom. Doing what you can is so much better than doing nothing. That's something I struggle with all winter because my garage gets so cold I can't lift with my osteoarthritis acting up. This year I bought bands to train over the winter inside my house. Between those and push ups, crunches, and chins in my kitchen doorway, I managed not to put on 10 pounds as I did in winters in the past.
You're doing great just moving. Keep doing what you can."Blessed be the Lord my rock, who trains my hands for war and my fingers for battle." - Psalm 144:1

Hello!
That's a pretty big accomplishment in itself, not to repeat the maladaptive pattern. I too had to learn to cope with soul sucking pain caused my injuries and although it is not easy it can be done if you want it bad enough.
Thank-you.
I googled it so I have heard of it, now. lol
I will peruse it and get ideas, thank-you Rob.
But sanity is a relative term as the great Arnold explained to us in the prophetic work of "Pumping Iron" (race car driver vs. bb'er mentality).
How are you and the family dealing out there?

bb.com is not letting me edit my post but no visit will be ignored!
Its all about perspective, right? Instead of focusing on what I can't do nor improve I'll focus on what I can.
This is basic university psych 101 stuff and focusing on the negative is a common mind trap for many.
If I can't build muscle, I can try to keep it.
And the goal was always to lose fat anyways so a few tweaks here and there and I am still on goal target, COVID or not.
Thank-you.

30 minutes Recumbant bike
Just a fantastic quarantine day (no sarcasm(.
Did cardio in the morning.
Went to the bank ATM and did not have to wait in line.
Went to Walmart, did not wait in line and they had every thing I needed (groceries) and more.
I bought 4 ten lb. plates, 2 twenty-five lb. plates, and a pair of DB handles and collars. New, $120.00.
All chores done by 10:30AM and that's a lot of time to kill without feeling guilty.
I'm kinda glad I'm an "essential worker" and am only quarantined on weekends.

Experimental Chest day
Push Ups
12, 10, 10, 10, 10, 10, 10, 10, 10, 10
fake Push Ups (from knees)
12 x 5 sets
floor DB Flye
20x10
10x20x2
-lack of ROM just not working for me
couch cushion DB Flye
20x20x3
couch cushion DB Press
20x20x3
Pump and fatigue achieved, I'm hoping for some DOMS the next day!
Yes, I'm excited. I lifted iron, the DB's made sweet music when I hit them together (clanking). It was like old times, but without heavy weight. I almost came every time the DB's clanked...my pelvis even involuntarily arched forward.
2 couch cushions are my new bench for chest day. Worked well and am pleased with my ingenuity.
I did a youtube search for stay at home chest day with no equipment...and everything that came up was multiple different variations of doing push ups ad nauseam.
I fukking hate push ups almost as much as I hate lunges and I'm too f'ing stubborn to learn this sh*t.
6 different kind of push ups...1 hand, clapping, 1 side, leg up, double push...
OMFG
when did something so simple, get so complicated.
So I just said fuk it and did a lot of the push ups I know how to do.
And what is with the super lean dudes with no muscle on youtube teaching people how to get "massive" and "blasting" chest with 1000 versions of push ups?
I feel sorry for them and everyone watching.

April 12, 2020
Off for observance of Easter.
April 13, 2020
Took me awhile to start exercising but goal completed.
45 minutes Recumbant bike
side and front Delts
behind the back side DB Raise
20x10x3, 15x20x5
front DB Raise
15x20x3
seated DB Press
15x20x5
Bio feedback from chest day tells me that routine worked far better than expected. Chest has been sore for 2 days and I'm usually only good for 1 when the gym is open.
With my DB purchase it occurred to me that I can now resume bodypart training.
To my chagrin my home DB's feel heavier than the gym DB's. I usually have no problem doing sets of 20 but I could not. So I got irritated and decided to overwhelm the delts by increasing the sets for overload purposes.
Stubborn fukkers!
I'm content with this workout. Already planning to add 1 arm DB presses so I can use my two 25 lb. plates.

Hope it works as well for you as it did for me!
I can only reason that my weight plates are much smaller than the gym's DB's...and physics never was my strong suit so I'm just gonna give up right here.
I recently heard the expression "throw enough sh*t on the wall and eventually some will stick" and that was my thought process on that chest day.
This whole workout from home thing has been full of surprises, like I'm doing exercises I fukking hate because its one of the few effective exercises I can do with the gym closed. But, I do like not shrinking and fighting for what I can do. Its been character building for sure.
Thank-you.

Arms and Abs
straight arm DB Curl/ 1 arm overhead DB Extension- SuperSet
20x10x3/20x10x3
10x20x3/10x20x3
knee ups
6 reps x 3
This was a draining day at work and I ended up walking off the job due to lack of PPE (masks).
It was a statement on my behalf.
I was able to return to work the next day with the required masks.
As for this "workout", all I really wanted to know was how my new DB's felt lifting arms.
This workout needed more weight and volume, and one I did to follow through with my commitment to do some exercise every day.

40 minutes walking
Legs
DB Squats
20x40x5
Stiff Leg DB Deads
10x40x3
10x0x3
-these hurt like a motherfukker and have always hurt like a mutherfukker. They hurt 20 years ago when I did 315 for reps and they hurt now doing them with no weight.
"Rice Picking"- I guess the dip dunks would call this a "static hold on the bottom portion of the squat"
but
I call it picking rice because the look of it reminds me of those old Vietnam movies where all the VC disguised as North Vietnamese villagers would be in a rice paddy, squatting and picking rice.
Then the American jets would come by and napalm them.
Where were we?
Picking Rice
20 sec. hold x1
30 sec. hold x1
2 motherfukkin' minutes x1!
1 leg Bodyweight Squats
8xBWx3
stair Calf Raises
20xBWx3
I never thought I'd see the day when the highlight of my workout would be to hold a stretch for 2 solid minutes.

Legs still sore...
Back
bent over DB Rows
20x10x5
20x20x5
1 arm DB row with kitchen chair for knee brace
20x20x5
DB Deads
20x20x5
DB Shrug
20x20
Jug Shrugs
20x3
-these are superior to DB shrugs for now, they feel heavier than my 20 lb. DB's
Posing
RDB -rear double bi
15 sec. x3
RLS -rear lat spread
20 sec. x3
40 minutes walking
This was the best session I've had at home so far.
It reminded me of the many slobberknocker back workouts I've had in the past and this was a slobberknocker for different reasons.
What I lacked in weight I made up for in volume and increased mind-muscle connection.
Every freakin' rep I felt exactly what I wanted it to do and it was wonderful.
I have plans to go to Walmart tomorrow when they open and see if they've re-stocked the weights I drained them of last Friday.
To quote the great Lou Ferrigno;
"I want more weight! I wanna beat him!"

2nd post of the day.
It has occurred to me recently that the owner of this journal has not posted one single picture nor video of himself. As far as anybody new to me here on bb.com I could just be some blow hard hiding behind a monitor typing sh*t with a pic of someone's quad as my avatar.
And I might need some reminding of what I once was.
So here's me at my "peak" about 8 years ago doing a photo shoot;
Quad shot before doing IDFA Nationals in Toronto, Canada
Posing down with forum member FLEX in his kitchen-- please note how much leaner AND bigger I am compared to the 600 lb deadlifter
Power Squattin' 720 for 25
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpJKx1nZ_GA&t=14s
Compound SuperSet Deads and Good Mornings
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YcV...ature=youtu.be
The irony is I had an un-diagnosed hormone issue then and shouldn't have been able to do 1/2 the sh*t that I did.
And that is why this has been has the hope and a plan to eclipse my former peak regardless of it being almost a decade ago and that I am well into my 40's.
I was asked back then if I had any tattoos or bodyart.
My reply was;
"Look at me, WTF do I want tattoos for?!
I am art."Last edited by ArchAngel'73; 04-17-2020 at 12:01 PM. Reason: fixing links

Solid progress in here. Good way to stay creative and continue to hit your goals of doing something daily. Motion is lotion, keep it moving.
Peak progress in those photos is definitely impressive! Strong mofo. I remember reading your tales from the fitness factory and enjoyed reading it. To bad the mods unstickied it.
That Deads and good morning supersets video was awesome.
Good luck on your Walmart pillaging. Hopefully you find some more weights.
