Guitar Megathread II: Unleash the picking fury!!!

To start off the new thread, what’s the technique that’s always given you trouble?

For me (and thus the thread title), it’s been sweep picking. There’s just something about it that I can’t get quite right. I can do a chit impression, but I know I’m frauding

In the near future, I’ll try to post some videos. I just rearranged my practice room to make it video friendly.

been playing a little over a year now so not exactly "always" but trills and alternate picking. Been doing scales with alt. picking in order to improve and it's helping. Just need to spend more time drilling trills. Came across them in a song i'm learning and the trill part is probably the only part i can't play decently well

I still anchor my pinky on the high e. I've mostly made peace with it, but wish I didn't need such a concrete reference point to orient my right hand on the fretboard.

I cut a little of the tip of my middle finger, had to get medical attention.

Not stitches, they put this almost like a synthetic scab on my finger, which soaked up all my blood and looks like a little piece of burnt bacon stuck to my fingertip.

I can't play for probably another's few weeks which is kinda pissening.

    In.

Troublesome techniques? Sweeping I guess. But honestly, never really sat down and made a concerted effort. Which sucks, because I would kill to play the solo in Selkies by BTAM.

Lately I've just been having fun playing along with the new Tool album, specifically because of the time signatures.

Can't remember if I shared this in the previous thread, but gear pron is always fun. Here was an older setup. Since have down sized to a kemper profiler, but still have the jc-120, because I can't bring myself to sell it...

For wanting to play like Malmsteen I’m still pretty mediocre but yea, sweeping still is troublesome for me. Although I’m not doing any strict practice RN. Mostly just jamming on KISS riffs. Lol subbed to this thread.

Just started up a few weeks ago. I watch JustinGuitar and I'm getting familiar at least with the terminology. Any advice from bros who are good now for someone like me to get started that you wish you would have done?
I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky. I never told anybody to lie, not a single time; never. These allegations are false. And I need to go back to work for the American people. Thank you.

I'm a hack guitarist but I can tell you from years of playing drums, practice with a metronome. Especially if you ever want to take the instrument out of your bedroom and play with other people.

I did. Some extra furring board-type wood I had sitting around and the bottom of a can of stain. Total cost was sub-$10 if I'd had to buy the stuff. I made it as big as I could with the supplies I had on hand - it's a little cramped for the amount of pedals I own but whatever.

The Carcosa and the Polara were both ~$70 off reverb and they're absolutely ridiculous value for money. If the Carcosa wasn't made by DOD people would be paying $300 for them. Same with the Polara, digitech crushed it.

I think it's a double edged sword. On one hand you can learn faster with instant access to everything however there are so many distractions today and it's easy to keep going down rabbit holes watching videos instead of playing. Without the internet and transcribing tools you had to rely on your ear a lot more to figure stuff out.

Plus lot of people these days skip the basics and head straight to advanced techniques and might end up with some pretty shaky sounding bends and vibrato. Or they focus entirely on single note lines and never learn more than a handful of chords.

I started out learning modes from a Frank Gambale lesson in a magazine. Inspired by that I decided to write them out in all 12 keys in a pocket size notepad for reference. I kept making mistakes so I'd tear out the page and start again. By the end I'd memorized them all and didn't need the crappy little notepad. How many kids would bother with that today? They'd download an app and call it a day.

I have been watching JustinGuitar and I think he does a pretty good job at least in the beginning stages of how to play guitar. I have a ton of time on my hands so figured I'd utilize that time into learning guitar.

Finally decided to book my first guitar lesson. Learned very little over the past ~6 months, I feel like I just can't focus with so much information and possibilities out there. Mostly, I get very frustrated at how my picking technique sucks which prevents me from learning songs at a reasonable pace, then I end up abandoning them halfway through and not retaining much. Hoping having a teacher IRL providing some guidance helps.

I've become pretty good at sweeping, at least the standard major, minor, and diminished shapes. The hardest thing for me is probably playing up and down scales at high speeds like for solos or really technical riffing. My alternate picking is solid at faster speeds but sometimes my fretting hand doesn't quite keep up.

Yeah honestly some chord positions are really hard to play and transitions between chords is something I have trouble with. Especially since I mainly play metal and tend to play single note riffs most of the time. If I ever play a chord is mainly a power chord or something close to it. It's kinda funny because I can play some pretty fast technical metal, but I'd probably have a hard time playing a campfire song where I'm having to strum chords because I'm not used to it.

I'm the opposite, jazz/blues player and can't sweep pick too quickly etc. But I legit have to make up a mini brace for my little finger on occasion, depending on the song.

Right on man I played jazz years ago in high school, only for a semester tho. I don't play much jazz now, but still enjoy listening to it. Wish I had stuck with it more, but definitely learned a lot about theory and chords while playing it. Still like to incorporate some maj7 chords into my metal songs haha.

Pulled the trigger and ordered a strat with a scalloped neck off of reverb. Hope it comes in soon.

Nice. I too ordered a guitar off Reverb, I've been on a playing hiatus for about 10 years give or take. Kids and what not but I bought my daughter a guitar for her birthday in Feb and it reignited the flame when I saw all those pretty axes in the store.

I never heard of Reverb so was a little apprehensive but it seems like they are pretty much like EBay, the buyer has the leverage. I got a barely used Schecter Hellraiser for $450 shipped. Always wanted one. All I know is I wish Youtube and all this other stuff was around when I first started playing. Now that my callous is back on my fingers I'm really enjoying playing again.
