I've been working hard at digging in while not dipping very far below the plane of the string with the tip of my pick. So the tip barely touches the string but I'm trying to exert a lot of force in that very tiny bit of pick that comes in contact.

Sounds good as usual but Little Wing should be squarely in your wheelhouse. Let's hear you play something a bit more technically challenging imo.

I'm getting back into Red Bear picks.

That casein stuff really does sound a bit better than everything else to me.

100% mate agreed. Just put a backing track way out of my repertoire (rock/blues haha) and whilst it certainly wasn't anything great it's amazing the buzz when you pull off some stuff while improvising you didn't know you had in you. Now the challenge is to play 'different' stuff competently , water is wet I know

also yeah I'm going to search for a different pick, my favourite so far has definitely been gravity pick but I have a feeling a smaller pick might be the way to go.

i'm going to check out red bear too

That is crazy , if that sounds good then the future is here.

I ultimately still always yearn for a FM9 because it's a multi FX layout but does everything my Kemper does

I know the Kemper stage is there, but I dunno, I just always want Fractcal for some reason (maybe it's a case of the grass isn't always greener)

Plus you've got generations of players now who have little to no experience playing through the real thing so there won't be any "feel" issue. It's all they know.

Many probably don't even bother coming up with their own presets. If you spend months dialing in great tones anyone with the same device will just expect you to freely share those presets. There's no mystery anymore. For years the comments would light up after an Andy Timmons video asking what his Strymon Timeline delay settings were. He never shared them. Fast forward to the Keeley Halo and you can have them in a pedal. Great product but I figured it out on my own. More enjoyable that way.

They aren't cheap and they're kinda fragile, just so you know. They are made of animal milk protein and too much moisture or heat can destroy them lol.

The mystery is gone - the availability of insane tones has never been more easily/cheaply attained and all these younger generation players have no idea how spoiled they are lol.

Of course on TGP you have people immediately reacting with like "what no IR loader? PFFFT HARD PASS, IDIOTS."

Nice one mate, yeah it does make me remember to be more careful with picks. Because of the cost but also the sheer annoyance when you can't find a good one (been using the small white jazz 3s since I lost all my other picks and no idea how people plays with these)

I use jazz III type style for my Red Bears - just a little bit bigger.

They're like around $30 and supposedly are the closest replication of the illegal tortoise shell pick. The way they feel between the fingers and on the strings and the tone they produce - which is particularly great on an acoustic - just have something I haven't gotten from any other type of pick.

Of course on TGP you have people immediately reacting with like "what no IR loader? PFFFT HARD PASS, IDIOTS."
They're hard to please over there.

Nothing wrong with having multiple rigs. Something like that can be great for a simple practice rig. FM3/FM9 if you need more horsepower. And an old Marshall if you want to channel AC/DC or boutique it up to corksniff that last few percent of tone. All bases covered.

And you're right, we've never had it so good. There is absolutely nothing to complain about. There's all you could want at every price point.

Every time I order strings I buy a few different picks in the Jazz III size to experiment and nothing has eclipsed the Jazz III Ultex.

I just give the others away because I'm probably never going to play anything else.

Edit: Old photo now, tried maybe another 10 different ones since, and no change.

I like ultex but they wear way too quickly, I also prefer the different way the red bear picks feel on the strings.

The red bear and ultex actually have some tonal similarities but the red bear seems to bring some just a little extra on top. Also the red bear wears far less quickly.

However it's a little annoying having to be aware of the fragility of the red bears in terms of snapping/warping if you grip too hard.

Not all of us are trying to ferociously fap the strings until they catch fire mang.

The pick I'm playing is at least a couple of years old now. I used to sharpen them with sandpaper but eventually came to like the tone with some degree of bevel. I do understand why it's not your thing. The main thing for me is the tone. Some picks are clicky sounding, dull, sound thin, etc. Ultex just sounds right to me. Back in the day I used red and black Jazz IIIs. I can't play with anything larger than that unless I was strumming an acoustic for a living. Would feel like holding a Dorito.

This is my collection. The actual cost of the picks in that tray would probably astound most people.

I'd believe it. The Patek Philippe of picks.

I like tone chasing as much as the next corksniffer but I locked in a few parameters. I only use Dimarzio pickups namely because it keeps me from going down a potentially very expensive rabbit hole. D'Addario strings. And Dunlop picks.

Have you tried those Red Bear/Hawk casein picks?

Never. Do you change picks depending on the style of music you're playing or are you still in the process of finding the best one?

You should try them. They stand apart from other picks from my very exhaustive research.

I alternate between using Chicken Picks and Red Bears but if the Red Bears weren't fragile I would probably only use them. A friend offered to get me some tortoise shell picks from Japan but I ultimately declined and decided that I'll just use the Red Bears instead.
