With the market you have to understand that reactions are nearly always forward looking. Earlier crashing was due to the unemployment numbers they had already anticipated. Today's rise is related to the likelihood that the stimulus bill is going to pass. Also, the market and the economy are not the same thing though they often tend to be correlated. Don't forget the 1 trillion being pumped into the market daily by the Fed as well as the low/no interest loans being offered to corps.

Scary that half of those infected in the US are located in New York and it is doubling every three days.

I think the reported numbers for China are extremely skewed and might be in the hundreds of thousands if not more.

Work from home is encouraged by our top management. Only come in if absolutely necessary.

Suits me. I wasn't well this week. Phlegm and back pain and general feeling as if run over by a bus.

By staying home I can recover without sick pay.

Life changed for the time being. Not going to yoga class.

    Holiday in May cancelled.
    Cycling, walking, swimming.
    No car.

China shut down in January when people were laughing about them.

They are going back to work now while freedom loving western countries still discuss whether a shut down might be over the top.

It's complicated because it's nearly always a combination of a political system and an economic system, they're not really separable. Generally though here's what we've tried:

Self sufficiency (I raised my own chickens but didn't manage to do enough because I'm too damn busy trying not to die)
Barter (How many hides do you want for those chickens? Wait, how do we make change again?)
Raiding (Give me your chickens, it would be a shame if something terrible happened to your nice village)
Feudalism (Those chickens all belong to me, keep them well, I'll let you live and maybe let you have one now and then)
Capitalism (I own these chickens and I'll sell you one if you have some money, otherwise sod off, dying of starvation is your problem)
Socialism (Chicken production is owned and managed by the state who is bad at raising chickens, promises you many chickens, delivers few and those are small and not very tasty)
    Some mixture of the above.

Our best results have come from mixed economies and we argue a lot about the appropriate mix because it's hard to be happy when you're mixing two or more things that each have their own problems. I'd be interested in something new, but everything I've read is mostly based on hope, mis-understanding of human nature and unicorns. In the mean time we muddle through with what we have.

We are at 85k now. The crazy thing is that nearly half of the cases are in NY, with the vast majority of those in NYC.

I agree with most of this, my quibbles are with details and not the essence. The size and complexity of society today is beyond what any population in history has ever faced, and old solutions are narrow at best, totally disastrous at worst. It's one of the things we should be sciencing the hell out of, but we haven't done that either.

It would help, though, if we had a population and leadership that actually believes in science.

    Boris Johnson tested positive

    @BorisJohnson
Over the last 24 hours I have developed mild symptoms and tested positive for coronavirus.

I am now self-isolating, but I will continue to lead the government’s response via video-conference as we fight this virus.

    Together we will beat this.

Yes, there are people like that and yes we do count differently. I am a little less self-righteous, I suppose. But, I think there are other ways to discuss things without causing an online war like there was a few years ago. Good people who were friends became enemies. Political subjects are usually moved to another section. Where we agree is that we shouldn't talk about politics.

I understand that, as I have drifted quite a bit over the span of my life, but my CORE values remain unchanged which do not fit the confines of either party. My point wasn't to impugn the President for changing parties; my point is that his world view, in my opinion, hasn't really changed. It is also my opinion that if he were still wearing his (D) badge, many, if not most of his support on the right would be gone. I'm not saying you are one of them.

I don't play golf, so I have no frame of reference. IIRC, he said something to the tune of, "they let you do it", which translates, in my opinion, to say that it's tried and tested by the speaker of that phrase. Either way, he is the leader of the free world, I think we have to put them on a bit higher pedestal than that of a Rockstar, JMO.

So the president is considering opening things up region by region, relatively soon (Easter).
My question is will you follow his guidelines or the Dr's,given your health and age? This isnt a question based on politics or who is right, but a question based on your own health and family.

I am following Dr. FAUCI all day every day.

I don't think "band groupies" represent all women.

A few years ago at the height of the "me too" movement, it wasn't until I read an article by Selma Hayek about her experience with Harvey Weinstein that I came to understand the situation from a woman's perspective. Perhaps you will also find it insightful.

Come on, really?? What is "self-righteous" about believing that partisan political obsession is making people unhappy? Have you not observed that yourself?

As far as calling me names, that does not really support your position. In fact, it proves mine. You insult people for expressing opinions you disagree with.

Got anymore insults to back up your position about how not "self-righeous" you are?
