Why Do Pianos Feel So Heavy??? SRS

Look I know they're heavy but to me they feel heavier than they should.

Every now and then I help my friend with his moving business. We had a piano Saturday. Picking that SOB up off the ground for two guys was heavy as phuck.

Yes I know they weigh 500 to 1000 lbs sometimes as low as 400. But the 400 to 500 ones shouldn't be a big deal for 2 guys.

We had one a few weeks ago we had to carry down the front porch. We had 6 guys on it and barely got it down.

    What's the deal?

That's liability. We pick them up off the ground. The wheels and legs can't take rolling. Especially on the old family heirlooms.

It's a large heavy object that isn't designed to be moved all that easily. Not sure why you'd assume it'd be simple to move in comparison with most common objects. Pianos also require you to handle with care which makes it a bit more taxing and the overall shape of most make it hard to get all your strength and weight into/under it. I've moved a few and each time it sucked.

yea, prob cause the weight is distributed weirdly

a barbell has weight distributed evenly and the barbell is designed to leverage those weights up.

    just a guess.

also, i assume you're talking a grand piano

You are 100 percent correct about pianos. My buddy got one for free donated by this old lady and we used these body lifting straps that wrap around your core. I have been lifting for decades, but that sob with 4 guys felt like a truck going up 3 front door steps. My low back ached for days and I train it first, every trip to the gym.

    Cliffs: hire pros for pianos.
sums it up a thread will start off promising and then turn into name calling..
The easiest way to tell when an argument has no merit is when the protagonist mixes in some personal insults.

I worked as a mover on the weekends for cash for several years when my kids were younger. Can confirm all pianos are heavy AF. Anything from a small upright one to a large grand piano (which are fkn death). We always had an extra flat fee charge for a piano. Anything from $75 for a small upright to double that for a grand. We of course being from a professional outfit had the benefit of using hump-straps. Makes it 10x easier cuz you are holding the weight of it all with your back and legs--and only using your arms to balance/sturdy it from side to side. I've had to do it w/o straps for friends/family though. Sucks a lot.
