Question Coming back home and weighing my car options...

Commute will be about 30 miles one way everyday. I'm basically starting from scratch and I have nothing to trade-in. I can easily pay for a really cheap car but I don't want to dump 50k cash on a new car either.

Hard to recommend without knowing anything about your financial situation or your lifestyle. I will say however life is too short to be driving around in an absolute chitbox. You’re looking at sitting in it at least 5 hours a week and 260 hours a year. I would find something lightly used with low miles and good options with the intent on keeping it for a long time. Middle ground between beater and yolo

well you gave us very little details on your finances but assuming you arent a car bro because you would have an idea of what kind of car you want and seems you need something that you are going to put a bunch of miles on but sit in a long time.

5 year old Camry / Accord or Civic is the recommendation. Lower miles since you already expect to put more miles.

As a really rough estimate of what it would cost,

    https://www.carfax.com/vehicle/4T1BF1FK0GU168712

here is a 2016 camry with 42k miles for 14k.

IDK if thats the going rate or a good deal or not but that is a ball park and youre asking about buying 30k+ cars so we can assume you arent dirt poor.

If it's your only car, then get the nicest lowest mile version of a car you like for $25k or less

If you're thinking to get something for daily and then another car for fun, then do the same as above but maybe under $10k. Problem with a lot of $5k commuters is they end up costing you another $3k in maintenance.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit softly.

    Pretty much this AF...

That said I would scrounge up as much cash as you possibly can and find some to buy out right... doesn't have to be the most glamorous thing on the road. Just reliable enough to get to from point A - Point B every day while you stack cash and get your feet under you.

Be smart about it before you dig yourself a hole that's hard to get out of

Not to be all Dave Ramsey, but used Camry all the way. Late teens model, around 30-40k miles, should be about $15k. Drive it for 3-5 years while you save money.

Hell, was in Seattle last week and ended up taking a bunch of Uber / Lyft trips. All were in Prius’s and was surprised at how nice the new ones were. Even the older ones would have around 200k miles on them and the drivers all said they were great. They all were getting something like 40-45mpg too.

I currently drive a 2001 Toyota Altezza with ~120k km which I bought for $1600, with $320/yr insurance. My 2 yrs is almost up and I'll be assigned back in Vegas (my second home <3). Having no car payments enabled me to save and invest. I have excellent credit and I would be purchasing a house first before buying a car.

I actually prefer standard trans as I have owned a Mazdaspeed 3 (which I modded heavily) and a 2012 Mustang GT 5.0. The commute would be at least 80% on the highway. My car probably costs around $5k easy in the US and looking around in sites like CL, $5k for a beater literally is beat the heck up with 150k+ miles.

I'm leaning towards getting 2 cars. I'm looking at olders Lexus, Toyotas, and a few Hondas. I have a solid knowledge with cars having tinkered and installed all mods on my Speed 3 and Mustang so I have the patience to work on the cars if I need to fix something.

The peace of mind of having a warranty is nice. Not to mention the cool safety features and infotainment systems of the newer cars. I'm considering a used Stinger GT, 2020 Civic Si, 2020 Forte GT (manual), 19+ Mustang Ecoboost PP1 (manual), Veloster N w/ PP, Mazda 3, Mazda 6, and a 2019+ Miata (manual). Then either a beater DD or a project car.

Something mid range. You want something comfortable and reliable to drive to work in, but you dont want to buy a brand new luxury car and dump miles on it.

Get something like a $5-6k BMW E39 5 series (2001-2003) that has been properly sorted out. Comfortable, good gas mileage, not a chitbox, and they're totally depreciated by now. Ride that while you save up for a fun car.

    Thumbs up

Just sold the wife’s 01 Camry
She’s doing real estate now and needed something a bit classier.
Looking into getting her into a 14-16 Mazda 6 GT or Touring. Slick looking cars with upscale interior for the price, stellar reliability from what I’ve researched and reasonably priced as well.
Decently fun to drive in the curves and hell if you spring for an 18+ and you get another turbo Mazda to play with.
