Hey everyone! Been reading this forums for years but only recently made an account. Been in a plateau lately. Had a herniated disc sometime ago so I had to stop deadlift/squat/Barbell row. Please critique my upper body routine. Is this too much of a "bro split".
Monday: Chest and Back
Flat Bench 5x10
Lat pulldown 4x10
Incline Bench 3x8
3x8 Cable Row
Tricep pushdown
Tuesday: Bi's and shoulders
Shoulder press 3x8
EZ bar curls 5x8 or 10
lateral shoulder raise 3x12
Hammer curl 3x10
Cable pulley lateral extension 4x10
Wednesday: Legs
Thursday and Friday: Repeat Monday and Tuesday with minor variations
It's not a bro split at all (other than the honorary but empty Leg day), but you can def come up with a much better routine. You also should not do chest same day as back - do it as a PPL setup so you you're not doing shoulders day after chest, and bis the day after back. Chest/front-side delts/tris then Back/Bis/Rear delts.
I'm not going to change your whole routine, but you should consider:
- An exercise to hit tri long head: skullcrusher or overhead extension
- An exercise to hit bi long head: incline db curl, from behind the back cable curl, drag curl
- A rear delt exercise: rear delt flyes, reverse pec deck, face pulls
If you cannot squat there is the leg press. Don’t be too bent out of shape about deadlifting, it really isn’t the muscle builder all the fanboys think it is.
Seated cable rows can be a useful substitute for barbell rows. For that, I recommend a bar that allows a grip slightly wider than shoulder width so at the top of each rep you can squeeze your shoulder blades together.
Personally, I think your program has too much duplication on your upper body days, and too many upper body days in general.
