    hip belt squats...

Would hip belt squats be a good alternative to leg press? I work out at home so have no access to a leg press machine.

In conjunction with back squats, as part of say an upper lower split.

For instance Lyle McDonald generic bulking routine has leg press in the routine, I was just wondering were hip belt squats an acceptable substitution.

Yes, be sure to have something so you can use arms to assist on the positive part of the movement when you are getting very close to failure.

Belt squats are awesome. I don't really even want to back squat after getting my belt squat.

I'm not sure how you were planning to perform belt squats without a machine, but the landmine belt squat seems like a pretty good option. Google some videos. Make sure the belt & chain isn't too long such that it impairs depth on the squat.

Also find something to elevate your feet to allow better range of motion. Stand on some blocks, exercise steps, strips of stall mat, etc..

Another alternative could be landmine goblet squat. Find a box to rest the barbell on (so you don't have to clean from the floor) and that allows a good depth at the bottom of the squat. I just started performing these and they're great and very low-back friendly.

This. I recently added a belt squat rack attachment to my home gym and am having a very hard time convincing myself that I should go back to back squats.
