Thoughts on having a small wedding?

was loosely talking to my girlfriend about this but she made mention of wanting a small wedding when she gets married.

I too started thinking about it and came to the conclusion that it's a great idea. Average cost of a wedding nowadays is 35,000 which is crazy ridiculous. Alcohol, setting up the venue, food and other things for a lot of people can very much add up quickly. Why spend so much on a wedding when you can spend a lot on your honeymoon venture? I've heard it's customary for the wife's family to pay for the wedding but her father is going through some serious health issues currently and while they have money they are dealing with something much more serious and me and my GF definitely don't have the money to fund one.

To add to that why would i want to have such a big event for about 80% of the people (mostly family) i don't even talk to? I can count 2 extended family members who regularly keep in touch with me, i honestly don't care if these people see me get married or not. I grew up seeing big weddings on my Mom's side of the family due to them having a big family and thinking that's how all weddings should be but as i've grown older i'm not so naive anymore. All of her family live in the same city and me and my GF live about 7ish hours away and i doubt half of them would even show up. My Dad's side of the family is much smaller but one of my cousins on his side got married in a very mini wedding and i wasn't even invited to it.

As she's grown older she only has a few friends that she would even think about inviting and i'm in the same boat. Neither one of us are particularly social nor like going out all that much.

What are everyone's thoughts on this?

We eloped, just the two of us.

It was perfect and so much cheaper than a traditional wedding. 10/10 Would recommend.

Going to the courthouse on Thursday to get married actually. Then Cabo on Saturday. This is however my second time getting married (divorced 11 years ago), but is my wife’s first. As a man I cannot understand expecting the wife’s parents to pay for our wedding. We decided to take the money from a wedding and put it towards our new house.

Modern wedding / engagement rings / wedding rings / etc are all materialistic garbage that do nothing to strengthen your bond to your partner.

Yes I think that’s what we are going to do. Just don’t have enough people we care about seeing us get married to have a regular wedding
