    Private sector vs Federal job

Which do you guys prefer? I keep hearing about how great government jobs are but from what I've seen from job postings online, I'm not sure what the appeal is. The pay for similar jobs is much lower than what you would find in the private sector. Is the work-life balance that much better to make the pay difference worth it?

Lower expectations in gubmnet jobs; full of lazy morons so anyone with a modicum of drive looks better by comparison but the real prize is job security. Very difficult to fire GS workers...

That's what I figured. Do you think it's worth taking the pay cut for a chill government job?

I couldn't do it but it all depends on how you are wired, what your field / qualifications and what you want from a career...

I prefer a more dynamic working environment with more upside in total compensation; slow and steady wins the race in gubment from what I have seen!

It depends on what you are doing.

Of course some office job full of lazy people is one thing but the govt has all sorts of jobs.

Dont hear people complaining that border patrol or aircraft mechanics are lazy and just punching the clock.

That said, if you think you as an outsider can apply for a govt job and because of your resume get a call, you will soon realize it does not work that way.

They post those jobs online because they have to. They have no intention of hiring anybody from those postings. They hire their buddies kids and stuff like that and other people who are juiced in.

Government jobs are boring. At least with the private sector, you'll probably work on new products and projects that's exciting and that they'll actually try to push out the door.

Government jobs are a coinflip. Mostly, you walk into an office with too many people happy to do the bare minimum to collect their paychecks, or you walk into having too many responsibilities for too little pay. Either way, the theme tends to be job security and benefits but if you're in a sought-after white-collar profession it's not a big deal to give up security for much better pay.

I suppose in the US there's a lot more regional variation, some states have bloated bureaucracies while others run everything barebones.
