Unhappy Seizure A Week After First Show

    Hello All,

I just had my first seizure about a week after to my first bikini show. I have a neurology appointment but preliminary assessment is that my sodium was too low from the herbal diuretics and dandelion pills.

I need advice on how to get lean for my next show without developing seizures. Help!!!

How about not competing if you're risking your health?

Makes no sense to me you would have a seizure a week after the show. Sodium should have been back to normal by then.

That is what I thought. I had just ended an all in cheat week full of salt and sugar. I guess it could be an unrelated coincidence.... I'll report back on what the neurologist says.

You sound not only physically but also mentally unable to handle these contest diets... 'cheating' for a full week is not a healthy mindset to have... this is doomed to become a full blown eating disorder I fear...

Wow, seizures are scary, sorry you had to deal with this. If the “preliminary assessment” was not a neurologist than ignore that assessment for now. A good neurologist will test for epilepsy and give you the best advice.

Let me know what they have to say.

It’s possible she was too low of body fat long before the show (i.e. starving due to anorexia) & is now suffering from “refeeding syndrome”.
I suffered from it when I began gaining weight from my anorexia. It can include seizures. I also had issues due to hyponatremia. The sudden influx of sodium and increased water retention due to carbs really strained my heart & body. You should almost definitely wait before competing again, OP. Try to keep your fluid intake as consistent with your sodium intake as you can. Don’t be chugging gallons of water if you don’t have a relatively sodium-filled diet that day. You may also want to consider seeing a therapist to rule out an eating disorder. You may have no idea you have one & many physique competitors do. At a minimum, you should also get a second opinion from another Dr. about the cause of your issue.

Seek a qualified contest coach and get advise from them.
They can see you personally and give more accurate advise than speculation and monitor you through the process.

Refeeding would be possible but I'd expect her to be dead if it was severe enough to cause a seizure and she didn't get other medical treatment. Sodium is not the typical electrolyte affected. It's a good point though.

OP, when you had the seizure did you actually get medical attention and have your electrolytes checked?

I went to the ER immediately. I got every test at the hospital and CT scan. They said my sodium was super low and low hydration. I am going to get all of the blood work done again at my pt tomorrow and going to neurologist next week. ER doc said that all tests were negative and I seemed to be in excellent health besides the sodium and hydration.

Oh, interesting. I'm really interested in how you managed to have dehydration with low sodium a week after the show. This really makes no sense to me.

It might have been even lower before she had the cheat meals. First bet would be to talk to the neurologist, second would be to find a good competition coach that can help with a good balanced diet.

I'm not a competitor...but are herbal diuretics and dandelion pills necessary for competing?

If it was low enough to cause a metabolic seizure and it was significantly lower than that previously she would have already been in the hospital most likely or experienced central pontine myelinolysis. I could say a lot more about this but I don't want to risk getting the thread closed.
