Any tips for bow flex pr1000?

So I picked one up over the weekend for 100 buck. I’ve been wanting to start exercising again but hated just doing body weight exercises at home and figured for 100 bucks I thought it’s worth a shot. Has anyone had any good experience with it?

    A: No.

You need a good rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

    Bowflex gets no love here.

    None.

    Not even a little bit.

There is even a stickied thread in this forum labeled "Official newbie bowflex search" which will show you just how little love there is for Bowflex here.

I would recommend starting with an adjustable bench and PowerBlocks or Ironmaster adjustable dumbbells instead.

I second the recommendation especially if you are limited on space.

An adjustable bench and a set of powerblocks was how I started my home gym a few years ago due to space constraints. I think it was a wise decision for me and those two items still serve me well. I would recommend a bench/rack/barbell setup if you have space though.

"The current recall is designed to address two significant safety issues:

-First, while being used in the incline position, the machine's backboard bench can unexpectedly collapse and break.

-Second, the "Lat Tower," can rotate forward and fall during use."

All that said, and if you want to risk your life, there are the basic exercises you can do. All probably listed online on there website.

OP, recall issues aside, there are a few reasons why Bowflex products don't get much love around here......first, they are really expensive when new, and they are cheaply made. Perhaps more importantly, they aren't good machines. You don't really know how much weight you are moving, so it is hard to track progress. The resistance is never anywhere close to its stated weight. There also isn't much resistance, so you will outgrown the machine quickly if you stick with a decent program. Those cables with all the pulleys also tend to create a herky-jerky movement that is tough on the joints.

Getting a power rack/bench/olympic weight set saves money and space in the long run, and can easily be scaled up beyond your ability to progress by continuing to add weight to the bar.

I used a Bowflex home gym thingy many years ago and was pleased with the results. Built some muscle and felt great. Especially as it seemed much easier on my joints. My machine looked a bit more put together however than this one.

That said, I would never ever buy one again. Nor would I ever recommend it. For as much as I was pleased with the results, I also was past it's ability within 3-4 months. As well, there really is no replacement to a decent rack, barbell, dumbbells and weight. Been using a rack for a few years now and the difference is night and day.

So, use this to get yourself off the couch and started. Get hooked and then buy yourself some real gear. You won't regret it.

When I was in my early 20s, I went to a mall sporting goods store to kill time, while waiting for a movie with some friends. One of the people I was with was a small 19 year old female, she maxed out the bowflex easily. The question we had for the salesman was "How can anyone get fitter on this machine, if a girl can max it out first try?"
