    Pupper tore ccl

2.5 yr old Lab. Needs surgery.

Anybody been through this and give me some idea of what to expect? Including cost/rehab/reinjury?

I'm absolutely devastated. He is my buddy and I feel at fault.

    Edit - some pics

Feel good reps coming your way dude. That’s rough. Had a golden retriever break her leg as a kid but I was too young to know about cost and all

Went through it with a chihuahua we inherited. She tore one and after that healed up tore the other side. About $4k each.

Almost guarantee they will tear the other side soon after they get healed up. Ligament tears always come in pairs in dogs.

Was told 60% of the time. Unless i can isolate it to a single event, then less likely. I cant really. Intake him on 2-5 mile walks/bike rides off trail all the time.

$5500 for the surgery itself + initial exams and follow ups. She walked again soon, but took at least 6 months before she stopped limping. I'm sure the other one will go soon since she won't play at all if she can't go 350mph.

How do poor people always have 3 dogs??

Do you warm him up at 350mph before the walks? RIP pupper leg, seems like the best/most resilient dogs I've had have been mixed breeds. Pure labs and GSDs always have fukkin issues, and they are never cheap.

Cruciate ligament is expensive but it's not that bad, it's actually quite common in dogs. Your pupper will be good as new soon brah.

I'd bet this will cost upwards of $6K to get him back and good as new. You have quite the pupper there and I've had a few myself. I never batted an eye at what the cost would be to help my best friend. Doctor told me it would cost $5k to buy my dog an extra few months and I was ready to pay for it until they told me he wouldn't survive the surgery and his quality of life would be terrible afterwards.

Yeah I'm paying whatever it takes. Just concerned it's going to be 5k now. 5k in a year for the other.

Get a second opinion. My dog sprained a ligament and the first vet wanted to do surgery asap. I took him to a second that said it was just a sprain.

After a few weeks he was perfectly fine, I'm glad I didnt listen to the first vet

Yes I did 1 round of PRP, and that was another $900, I think. Watching your friend limp around in pain for weeks is the worst, so I just opened the checkbook.

I did save one appointment by cutting out the stitches myself, which was easy with 2 people.

    About 12 hrs post surgery:

repped for using the correct terminology. Dogs don't have an ACL. CCL tear is correct. If your dog has a torn CCL and you're calling it an ACL tear than you have not done enough research about treatment options.

My 6 year old female pit bull tore hers about 2 years ago. I was very bummed out about it because she is extremely active. Our lifestyle involves lots of strenuous outdoor time. She was favoring her leg for about a week before I took her to the vet. An x-ray ruled out anything broken. The only way to confirm a torn CCL is an MRI. They next step would have been to take her to a specialist. I opted to wait. The surgery is extremely invasive. TPLO is the most common with the highest rate of success. They are sawing off bone. I wanted to avoid at all costs.

I did a month of restricted activity. Started joint supps and CBD oil. Like I said it's been 2 years now and she is fine. She still slightly favors it when standing for long. But her movements are normal. We are back to very active lifestyle with no issues. The other CCL has not torn which I was expecting since that seems to be common.

If it's a partial tear there are other options like prolotherapy.

My dog tore something in her knee and needed surgery. She was fine afterwards. Happened when she was 11 and she lived another 3.5 years after that. Cost about 5 grand if I remember.

My dads chocolate lab had the same thing. Was about 3-4k per side if I remember right.

That was about 8-10 years ago and shes still going strong. She actually got bone cancer about 3 years ago and had to have a front leg amputated so there is more stress on the rear legs, but she is still a bouncy happy nut even at 15 years old.

Not sure where you are but he had it done at the UGA pet center as recommended by the vet since they are really good and cheaper on price.

My doberman had both knees go (about 2 to 3 years apart). Each one cost roughly $5,000. Rehab is the toughest part because the knee itself feels better so she just wanted to get going, but you REALLY need to make sure he stays as immobile as possible and you do the stretching rehab you'll be taught. Tough part is, because of the added stress to the good knee to compensate, there's a 50+% chance he'll need the other knee done at some point.

For me, absolutely zero regrets, especially for her quality of life. She's 10 years old now and still runs like an absolute champ thanks to her bionic legs.

How do poor people always have 3 dogs??
That's a lot more than the quotes I was coming up with. $2500 seems to going rate. And the hospitals I looked into usually will include follow ups AND procedures arising from the complications of the surgery with that price.

This was at the best surgery center in Seattle, where they do 50+ of these every week srs. They have 6-7 full time surgeons just chopping knees every day. I'm sure it's a lot less in cities where prices aren't 350% higher just because. Someone I know is from Podunk, Kansas and said it was $6k to do both his dog's knees there.

My pupper partially tore hers. It was an isolated incident at a dog park where she hit a hole in the ground at full speed. Was devastating. Saw multiple vets and none of them recommended surgery since it wasn't fully torn but I would definitely recommend surgery if it's an option. My girl limped for months and then for about a year or 2 would pull up her back leg when she was stressed and run on 3 legs, was so sad. She was good after that with therapy and rehab and could full sprint no issues. She's old now and has developed some pretty bad arthritis in that leg which I'm assuming might be related (not sure though, the injury was about 10-11 years ago). So keep your dog on lots of joint supps and CBD, they've helped mine a ton.

I kind of wish that I had done the CBD and joint supps at different times to see which one helped the most. They did wonders for my dog.

    Unhappy

my old doggo tore his ccl, he never fully recovered 100% (as you can imagine why'd it be difficult to do so)

even if they do, there's a high chance they can re-injure themselves. really sad tbh.

best of luck with the pupper.
