    Considering switching platforms

...from the 4th generation F-body to a Foxbody mustang.

Other than the cheap interior, I've really enjoyed my last few Trans Ams. My most recent (sold her last fall) was a 2001 Sunset Orange Metallic, pushing just over 400whp. Nothing crazy, but plenty of power for a weekend cruiser in a smaller town.

However, I'm strongly considering an early 90's hatchback mustang. They can still be had for a decent price (compared to the notchbacks, anyway). Really like the way they look, but haven't actually driven one.

Thoughts and or experiences greatly appreciated!

What's there to think about? You are considering jumping into one of the greatest chassis made to date for going fast!

If you plan on keeping the old pushrod 5.0 just know you WILL taco the stock block around 500hp...

The T5 (if you should decided to go with a manual) will flat out take some abuse from my experiences...

The AOD is a gigantic slipping pile of $hit so if you plan on making any kind of HP be prepared to do a 4r70w swap or go full send with a 6r80

Stock 8.8 is a tough mthrfkr and there are parts on top of parts to upgrade it fairly cheap

And depending on what you want to do with it... They can be at or under 3,000#'s really easy which just makes everything better...

Oh... and you are going to want to target gray and black interior... Porno Red & Blue just look like $hit IMO...

    Thanks for the info, 5oh!

I'll absolutely be looking for a manual trans. My last TA was an auto and I missed banging gears pretty badly by the time I decided to sell her.

Glad to hear that the foxbody comes stock with a tough rear end, as the 10 bolt in the F-body is straight garbage, even at stock HP.

My 93 F150 has the red interior & you're right, it's ugly as sin. Black or gray, for sure.

Other than rust on the strut towers, any other common issues I should look out for?

If you have the ability to get under the car to inspect it... look over all the attachment points for the rear control arms. I cant say its common but the 2 Foxbody's I had started ripping the mounts for the control arms smooth off. But I was putting a lot of power down and both of those cars would hook up on a gravel road... so if you find anyting close to stock it may not be an issue unless the car was just flat out abused.

Depending on what I find and where it's located, I'll get underneath and check it out for sure. If I find the right car but it's ridiculously far away, I'll just have to be diligent with getting good info and asking for plenty of pictures/videos. Due to distance, I've utilized the same transport company for my last two vehicles purchased and to be honest, I've gotten rather lucky with how smoothly the process went both times.

What kind of power were you putting down with yours?

I had two different combos in my '89lx Hatch that made some legit power for the time... both over 600 to the tire but only had it on the dyno once.

My 93 GT I bought as a project somebody didn't want to finish... 408 Windsor with a Procharger… never made it to the dyno with that one but just based off of how it felt it was in the same ball park as my '89

But I cant tell you how many stock block 302's I went through on the bottle...they wouldn't set any dyno records but in a 2900lb chassis and a good suspension it would eat a lot of cars up on the street

I was a foxbody guy and cracked a torque box on 2 cars, they are a notorious weak spot if you live anywhere they salt roads in the winter.

I love the fox body platform (had 6-7 of them), the aftermarket and community is so huge that anyone can participate.

Recently had a mid-life fever dream about going full restomod on a low mile fairmont futura wagon that a family friend has parked.

I live on the North Dakota / Minnesota border (cars here rust by just looking at em), so I'll be looking for a southern car for sure. Thanks for the tip, I'll be sure to keep that in mind. Repped

I'll have to keep my eyes open this spring when people get their cars out of storage. Wouldn't be a bad idea to make pals with a few of the foxbody owners in town. Would be nice to spend a little time with one before making a purchase.

No to thread jack op, but............how difficult is the LS swap into the Fox?

I'm about 6 months from being back in the states..... Ill be starting a autox/road course/weekend track car build and I've really been looking into this set up.......minus the turbskies, but most likely HCI & Tune. I've done an engine swap before, rebuilt a handful of motors, have access to a lift, welder and all needed tools. Just wondering how much fab/modification is actually needed.
    Currently
US Virgin Islands Crew.....is that even a thing?

    Formerly
    <Kansas Misc Crew>
    <Georgia Misc Crew>

These days... about as hard as whippin' that credit card out

    http://www.brphotrods.com/products/7...ang/index.html

Not to mention the mountain of information available focusing on just about every aspect of the swap..from bolting it in to wiring

I have LS swapped 2 Foxbody's now.. the first one I actually had to fab the motor mounts because they just weren't out there to buy... The second one I bought a swap kit and it literally fell into place as if it came from the factory that way

LS swaps are hard to beat for the money. I've been throwing around the idea of finding a cheap 04-08 F150 with bad engine and doing a LS/5.3 vortec swap to use as a tow rig.

    .

I drove a 99 SCSB F150 as my daily beater for years... V6 Standard , LOLz… the truck barely had enough power to get out of its own way but I managed to put 275k miles on it before it slung a rod...

Anyways , it was funny you mentioned that because I had 5.3L / 4L60 in and mounted.. just needed to be wired but a buddy of mine made me an offer I couldn't refuse for it... Besides the "higher ups" at my company would always give me a ton of $hit for driving a beater and getting a vehicle allowance. I swear all you have to do is start an LS swap in something and it'll sell

Not to mention the mountain of information available focusing on just about every aspect of the swap..from bolting it in to wiring

I have LS swapped 2 Foxbody's now.. the first one I actually had to fab the motor mounts because they just weren't out there to buy... The second one I bought a swap kit and it literally fell into place as if it came from the factory that way
On recharge, but thanks for the link!

I'm between an LS swapped foxbody, E36/46 or just picking up a 2010 Camaro SS. Ill know a better actual budget once I get back to the states.

Why not just find a Chevy with a 5.3 and use that? I prefer the Ford pickup too but that seems like a lot of work if you have a running donor.

Some guys will LS swap anything
