Is obesity just an inevitable consequence of capitalism?

I mean we've seen in certain communist societies where citizens have literally starved.

But with capitalism anyone is basically free to create a business (including ones in the food industry) thus we have millions of said producers and thus greater access rather than having it constricted to just a few suppliers. Capitalism just has made it so abundant, accessible and cheap to everybody. Even the poorest people probably aren't starving in a first world country.

Marketing and what not gets the word out to millions of people and can get people to buy your product, with companies basically in it to make a profit. Not really giving a fuk about health unless the people in general demand it. But still, if it tastes good, people are going to demand it regardless.

It's also a trend in many developing societies who have experienced economic growth. Thailand for example has more than doubled it's obesity rate from the 90s to 2010s

Can capitalism itself correct this problem? I'm not saying any country should adopt communism, but I'm not sure of how you would go about tackling this issue in a society where food is at our fingertips, everything is becoming more and more convenient to the point where you don't even need to get up to turn the lights on anymore. And have uber eats at your door without having to move a muscle.

I can't think of a more "freer" thing than stuffing yourself silly with twinkies and McDonalds till you die of heart disease lol.

I believe even in a capitalist society the individual is still in control of the amount and of what he or she consumes. Stop with the victim mentality.

    it for sure is inevitable

for instance today i have several medium pizzas delivered to myself to eat alone in my basement. pretty easy to constantly eat hot pockets when my walmart is down the street - but it can be delivered as well. Think about how many people do that and its obvious that OP is true

Sure, but in 1970 the GDP was 1 trillion. Now it's 20 trillion. Not to mention countless innovations and advancements in tech that have made things easier, more abundant and convenient. But we could perhaps also point to things like decreased emphasis on exercise and other hobbies such as video games and internet replacing it

at the end of the day its easier to get fat today because of the advances in our technology..life is easier, food is unhealthier, and more jobs require people to be sedentary. Plus most people in the US drive cars. But obesity is a choice for sure. You cant blame it on the system, because the system gives free will to the citizen

See my reply and then add the internet and video games and binge watching capabilities to the food part.

Caloric intake is a major cause of it, but its also that youre eating chit and too much of it while youre sitting on your azz playing games, binge watching netflix, miscing etc.

True enough, but it doesn't just effect that 1 singular person in a vacuum. It leads to other health problems which inevitably become a drain on the system (I guess in a purely capitalistic sense it wouldn't because people would be paying for their own care but this isn't reality). Military has a hard time recruiting people that can pass basic fitness tests. Just envisioning a society in the future where some country invades but we're all too obese to defend ourselves lol and all of this stuff starts affecting productivity and economic growth negatively.

There are a few ways, but then again...... it takes away some of our rights.

    1) set a food standard for what type of food can be sold prepared........ no more chit food

    2) reduce the portion size of foods - that way fatties can be poor fatties as they will spend more money to buy double/triple servings making the chit holes more money, and killing off the fatties as they'll be too broke to go to a doctor ....... win win

    3) raise the price of fast food- to which people already complain about the cost of food to begin with.

In a true capitalist society, maybe, in the current crony capitalist society we live in? Not really. You can't control big corps like Monsanto being involved with the government and food production. You can't control things like corn subsidies that influence what a lot of people, particular the poor, have access to eat. Ffs just look a what an average lunch at a public school in the U.S. looks like:

If the feminization of Christianity was rooted in the faith’s lack of physicality, the solution was obvious: to connect the faith to the body. And not just any kind of body — a strong and vigorous one.

An energetic, action-taking ethos championed by Roosevelt as “the strenuous life,” as well as the advent of modern physical culture, were already growing up around 19th century culture generally, and Christians saw an answer in this emerging lifestyle to what ailed their faith specifically. Masculine reformers of Christianity would seek to apply this nascent strenuous spirit and physical focus to their faith in an effort to make it more “muscular.”

Historian Clifford Putney defines Muscular Christianity “as a Christian commitment to health and manliness,” and as a label and a philosophy, it originated in England in the 1850s, growing out of the novels of Thomas Hughes (Tom Brown’s School Days) and Charles Kingsley (Westward Ho!). Both men believed the Anglican Church was becoming too soft and effeminate, and created protagonists in their books who embodied an ideal counterbalance — young men who managed to combine the virtue and ethics of gentlemanly Christians, with masculine athleticism, camaraderie, and honor.

An illustration from Tom Brown’s School Days, in which the protagonist fights a bully who’s been picking on a frail and sensitive boy. In the book, Hughes expounds on the need to sometimes use violence for the right reasons: “The world might be a better world without fighting, for anything I know, but it wouldn’t be our world; and therefore I am dead against crying peace when there is no peace, and isn’t meant to be. I’m as sorry as any man to see folk fighting the wrong people and the wrong things, but I’d a deal sooner see them doing that, than that they should have no fight in them.”

While Muscular Christianity took off first in England because industrialization and urbanization (and accompanying concerns about a decline in manliness) occurred earlier there than in the States, it eventually migrated to American shores in the 1870s. And here the movement would find an even greater and longer-lasting impact; it remained popular from around 1880 until 1920, and as we’ll see later, continues to influence American culture today.

The Muscular Christianity movement was never officially organized, or headed by a single person, but was instead a cultural trend that manifested itself in different ways and was supported by various figures and churches — predominately those of the liberal, mainline Protestant variety. (Given the gender-neutral, egalitarianism of modern mainline churches, this may come as a surprise, but manliness did not become a hiss and a byword in these denominations until half a century after the movement had died out.)

Adherents of the movement sought to make the Christian faith more muscular both literally and metaphorically — strengthening the physical bodies of the faithful, while pushing the church’s culture and ethos in a more vigorous, practical, challenging, and action-oriented direction.

How about people assume some consequences for their life choices and stop being victims, eat like a fatty, become a fatty, bouhouhou I'm a victim... Same with college loans, people don't complain when they get the money, only when they have to pay it back, same with a lot of things, the cards to change your life are in your hands.

Is obesity a consequence of capitalism? Wtf kind of relation is that? It's the consequence of overeating for months/years lmao. Fat people are ****ing lazy and have 0 ambition to control themselves.

No, the political system you live in cannot make you fat, only skinny.

The US doesn't have capitalism. We have cronyism. You have to be awful tarted to think that every developed country in the world suddenly decided to be fat without drastic changes in external influences.

This is cronyism, a huge reason for the obesity epidemic.

I’ve been to plenty of capitalist countries(even more capitalistic than the US) and people aren’t fat. Colombians have all the same food available and aren’t fat. I think it mostly has to do with methods of transportation. It’s pretty tough to gain weight if you’re walking 15k-20k steps per day even with crappy diet.

They foster addiction and horrible habits (I won't get into their anti-capitalist shenanigans).

How many smokers do you know who only smoke 1-2 cigarettes/day? Tobacco kills 8 million people every year, but it's not a problem because I choose not to smoke and a couple cigarettes here and there are fine, eh? Yes, on an individual level, just say no. But it's a pretty big fukkin problem on a societal level.

Please spare us from this idiotic argument. Travel the world and youll see all of these products on the shelves without obesity everywhere you look.
