These stats can’t be right on the dumbbell curl

I ran into this website and it calculates your strength compared to others.

I can’t post links but the website is called Strength Level, just google it.

    I put in:
    male
    age 24-39
    Weight 230lbs
    Dumbbell curl
    80lb dumbbells
    8 reps

It says I’m only stronger that 82% of other males in the age range on dumbbell curls.

This can’t be right, I have never once seen another mother ****er curling the 80 pound dumbbells let alone every 5th or 6th mother ****er that walks by. I may be wrong.

What are your thoughts on this stat and how do you think they get their calculations?

That website is useless. It states an elite deadlift for a male weighing 170 pounds is 503 pounds. I deadlifted 550 weighing under 170 and I am nowhere near elite. I would ignore the entire website.

because anybody can claim or post random bullchit, nobody is really doing low-rep dumbbell curls, and anybody can cheat the fuk out of it and claim they did a certain weight for a certain amount. there are no standards which constitutes a legit lift.

Fake website. The weight you curl doesn't mean **** because it's all about the speed and technique of it anyway.

You curl 80 lb dumbbells 8 times?

Or 40 lb in each hand?

It depends on what your goal is. Technique is always important. If your trying to get as strong as you can then yes, obviously the weight is important. If your trying to look good in the mirror then no you don’t need heavy weights.

But a % of how strong you are compared to others isn't (accurate or not). Just keep progressing as much as you can without getting injured and/or looking like you're dancing while you curl.

If you already don't see anyone else curling what you can, who cares about the %?

For your average joe yes. I compete in powerlifting, some contests have the strict curl. So I’m not just competing with the people I see in my gym, I’m competing with the world. I like to compete.

Keep at it, you have a much better way of judging your strength and you shouldn't care what any website says.

Not necessarily, because doing them fast or with a bounce/jerk at the bottom creates momentum, which does nothing to develop strength, but allows much more weight.

Yep, pretty good, but only better than about 80% of the male population. OP will have to curl 100s before he's elite.

It would all depend on how and what you call a curl.
Strong guys can sling up heavy DB's and call it curls but it's usually a whole body effort not just biceps.

I have yet to see a properly executed curl with more than just the barbell performed by anyone. And if there isn’t a wall involved, it ain’t no strict curl

But that brings the question up: is the strict curl a superior version?

I'm genuinely surprised that the strict curl is still involved in some competitions. Its not even a compound lift. It would make so much more sense to replace it with an OHP.

They are optional and don’t factor in to ones total. I think having an optional OHP/log press would be cool but honestly strongman/weightlifting claimed anything overhead press related

For testing bicep strength? Probably. No way one can cheat the rep. As far as bodybuilding, it probably doesn’t matter.

I have to defend this website, because I think it's amazing for logging your lifts and see how you progress.

I have just put in the numbers you're claiming and it says you're stronger than 90percent of all people that have logged their dumbbell curls on that website (filtered lifts) when not accounting for your bodyweight.
You have to remember that the people logging their lifts on the website are all lifters, so it's not the whole male population, also for lifts like curls, many will cheat and log their heaviest cheatcurls. For bench, ohp, squat and deadlift for example I think the numbers are more accurate.

Lots of great opinions here, thank you all for your feedback, it’s much appreciated. If there is any interest I can post a video here of me curling the 80’s just for fun.

I like to use the site often for checking my maxes and figuring out what rep range to use based on them. However, I sometimes get the idea that some of the numbers they show for the different strength levels are a tad unrealistic. But I like that they factor in your lift against how much you currently weigh, for progressive results you can check back on later as you lose or gain weight. It kinda follows you a bit. I don't see it as a 100% accurate way of testing where i'm at, but I like messing around with it sometimes.

Also you shouldn't stress about what other people can lift. What's important is how you progress and better yourself. Think about it. What other people are lifting doesn't concern you.

I compete in powerlifting so I would say it does matter but you could argue either side for eternity.
