These people aren't making billions in the stock market buddy. Half the country is one emergency away from bankruptcy.

This is a sign that inequality is off the charts and getting worse.

A low savings rate is also not a sign of a healthy economy, even if you factor in more money going into the stock market, real estate and money markets. Savings means deferred consumption and potential investments and an expanding real economy. Higher stock prices in the current context is a consequence of financialization, low interest rates and the Fed injecting trillions of dollars in liquidity to keep a bubble economy going as the real economy is cannibalized in the process.

Does anyone really believe that a Stock market valued at 150% of GDP is a sign of health? Look at the fed balance sheet in relation to the S&P 500. Stock market tanked at the tail end of 2018 as the Fed started tapering off QE, and then started expanding again as they reversed course and started pumping liquidty again.

These are claims on future wealth that is simply not going to be there, every additional dollar of GDP growth now requires 4 dollars of additional debt. Essentially we are stealing from the future to maintain the illusion of prosperity in the current.

The inability to save, as a third of the workforce is making $10.22 an hour certainly is a sign of inequality. At that income level, You pretty much have to go further into debt just to get by in alot of places. Rent and healthcare inflation is out of control and getting worse, another beautiful sign of financialization. Driving up asset prices at all costs.

Ok, let’s say that 30% of the 69% (in the op) HAS to get into debt and has no way of saving(which is an argument in itself)

We still have 39% that choose not to have $1k in an account
Again, most people spend like idiots and don’t save

I’ve seen these stats for years. It’s actually gotten worse. It generally refers to having an emergency fund/liquid money. It doesn’t matter where you keep it.

So most Americans are screwed when an emergency pops up. Hence all the credit card debt.

It’s a big problem that is primarily based on individual habits.

People don’t budget and they overspend.

Edit: politics is at the bottom of the list for the cause of this.

If you look at the chart at the bottom of the article, Where Americans Store Most of Their Money, you'll see only 33% have a savings account and 29% have no savings. If we assume that 70% of those that do have a savings account have less than $1000, then we can find that (0.7)*(.33) + 0.29 = 52.1% of Americans have less than $1000 in savings. Not ideal, but not as exaggerated as 69%. To solve your second concern, I have a credit card that will cover any unexpected costs. This gives me 30 days to liquidate any asset I have to pay for the emergency, to prevent paying cc interest, or if the emergency is not that large, my checking account should be able to cover it.

My savings took a pretty big hit when I got my house. I bought the property out right, and paid for a lot of the stuff instead of financing it.

However, when you have a fat ass retirement check every month, savings isn’t really an issue anymore.

I can 100% understand why, even those smart with money & those that live below their means are struggling.

Costs of living are rising well beyond what the average worker makes.

Most are 1 medical emergency or car breakdown from homelessness.

Those without concious or morals have financialized everything and have had laws passed that dont apply to them because they are above it, and those that have spoken up and done something about it either end up corrupted or dead.

Slavery never ceased to exist, except now you get to chose where your slave hut is. Im not anti- capitalism, in the sense in i believe you should work for what you have.

It's sad, but it's true. Most Americans can't afford a $500 emergency expense. Thankfully, I am far from that.
