Kobe was not that good...good though

He came in the league at a time they were searching for Jordans replacement. He got preferential treatment. Refs allowed him to do things other players weren't allowed to do. He was allowed offensive interference as he would bully past the defender and a forward would have to foul him. He routinely missed and 1's as if he wasn't even remotely in s position to shoot.

When clutch moments came, he became quite average. He'd make a few clutch shots, miss a bunch of clutch shots.

Preferential treatment plus being surrounded by really good clutch players carried Kobe to 5 rings.

The veil was pulled at the end of his career as the Lakers gave up on surroundings him with really good players and coaches. He ended his career on really bad teams. The end of his career was the real Kobe. The NBA had curry, LeBron, wade, Durant and harden...the NBA no longer needed to give Kobe preferential treatment.

His passing is still sad. He was charismatic, handsome etc. But in terms of pure basketball, his career was manufactured. He wasn't THAT good.

Kobe entered the league at 17, got drafted as the 13 overall pick and traded for an old center that was injured at the time, didn’t become a starter until 20, and finally when he reached the age of 24 he became the leading PPG player on his team. In his first big moment he shoots 4 straight air balls against a must win game against the Jazz in the playoffs and the entire stadium was laughing at him. Kobe started as mediocre prospect and ended as the best player of the 2000's. He was the player of the decade. That's what makes him so special.

I've never seen a player put up points like Kobe did:

    Kobe's Per-Game Stats: 40.4 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 2.4 steals, 0.9 blocks
    Date: Jan. 29, 2003 through Feb. 28, 2003
    Los Angeles Lakers' Record: 13-3
    Shooting Percentages: 47.5 FG%, 42.9 3P%, 85.1 FT%

He put up ridiculous numbers while also being the best defensive player on the court. 9 time 1st team all defense.

Kobe was arguable the best scorer of all time. He deserved to win a couple more MVP's but NBA was rigged stupid and didn't want Kobe as the face of the NBA after those ridiculous allegations.

Not to mention how Kobe defeated HOFer's like manu, KG, Duncan, Parker, Dirk, Nash, etc. OVER AND OVER again in a stacked western conference.

Kobe Bryant holds the NBA record for most 50 win playoffs teams defeated at 25-10.

    And the best part:

Only 4 teams ever have faced 4 50 win teams in 1 playoff run and won the championship. The 94 Rockets, 01 Lakers, 08 Lakers and 2010 Lakers. Kobe was on 3 of these teams.

I'm not a Kobe fan, don't really like basketball much, but come on OP.

Kobe's legacy is that it was the dedication he put into the game to become great. He's one of the greats and he did that with less physical tools than a lot of other players on the "best of all time" list. He's like the Tom Brady of the NBA (at his peak). Sure, there are players that but up better numbers and will dominate more throughout the season, but if the championship is on the line with one possession left in a one score game, who do you want out there for your team? Kobe and Brady.

Lol, he was one of the best. He didn't get special treatment from refs. He studied the ref handbook so he knew where they had to be on the floor during the game. That allowed him to foul at times when he knew the refs wouldn't be in a position to see it. Pretty smart. How can you really question his talent? I've never been a huge fan of his but that doesn't mean I didn't respect his ability.

Kobe did achieve a lot but he comes with the stigma of being a shot chucker due to his high volume shooting style. You always have the 2 tales when it comes to Kobe. The older generation X/baby boomer that are all on Jordan and the Generation Y/millennials that are all on Kobe.

I keep hearing about the mamba mentality and kobe's incredible work ethics. Working out at 5:30 am and hitting the court wherever he travels and whatnot. Yet when you stack him up against the true GOAT Michael Jordan and the accolades between the 2, Jordan is clearly head and shoulders above Kobe. The only times where Kobe does beat Jordan is due to him playing more seasons than Jordan and at that he didn't beat Jordan by much. Jordan would smoke cigars, play golf and then score 40 that night. Jordan was gifted and didn't need to go to the extreme when it came to training. He did however wanted to kill you at practice and in games. His killer instinct on the court is unmatched.

    https://www.landofbasketball.com/pla...ael_jordan.htm

Kobe had the advantage with social media while Jordan didn't and even then Jordan is still considered by most the best player in NBA history. Top that with the fact that kids were influenced with Dave Chappelle throwing a condom in the trashcan while yelling, "Kobe!" all while kids all over the country were doing the same thing with Jordan years before.

I do admire the fact that Kobe decided to take the challenge and even though he fell short with more years to do it he is all right with me. I'm not a hater...just never liked the dude as a player. His playing style or character never appealed to me.

He honestly would probably dominate even more if he was at his peak right now. He played in an era with Ron Artest, Stephen Jackson, Rasheed Wallace, Reggie Miller, Bruce Bowen, etc. The league has gotten so soft since those players retired. In 2005-2006 the league average points per game was 97 with only five teams averaging over 100 points. Last year the league average was 111 ppg with every team averaging over 103 ppg.

On December 20, 2006, Kobe Bryant and Kwame Brown combined for 63 ponts. Kobe scored 62, and Kwame scored 1.

And he played D every night. Going against guys like AI, vc3, manu, pierce, wade all driving to the basket.

If he played in today's era with the defense they play today he'd average close to 45

After Shaq left, before Gasol came, those Lakers teams were trash.

Don't let his dip in production through those years fool you.

Guy was being double and triple teamed a ton.

He was keeping them afloat, in a real conference.

That's exactly what makes him one of the best basketball players ever though. Didn't have the physical tools of Jordan or Lebron, not the natural talent or skill. It was all hard work. Still managed to be without a doubt top 10 all time, probably top 5 careers all time, and now probably the second best legacy in basketball of all time.

All i know is every NBA Finals from 1999 to 2010 had Kobe, Duncan or Shaq in them and most of the time one of them was on the winning side.

Then Lebron, Kawhi, Curry and Durant took over the league.

He def. has his case to be top 10, I’m sure Larry bird would agree after that performance against the pacers when shaq went out. That was a young Kobe that took over a finals game against few legends.

I also don’t agree with the fact people say he didn’t make his teammates better, I think his sacrifice and mentality in practice all those years paid off with Pau and the crew in 2010 when he struggled shooting game 7 but everyone around him stepped up.
