    Who uses the Smith Machine?

Anyone like using the smith machine?

When I have access to one I do tend to use it for a few things, just not for what it was kind of advertised to do: Bench and Squat. Shrugs and Seated BTN press are some examples ways I would use it.

Not my favourite piece, but I've used it in the past, as you say, shrugs work well, it also worked for me on steep incline chest, calf raises, close grip bench and split squats, but on most movements the bar's linear path put too much stress on my joints.

I use for squats, bench, and btn shoulder press. Before you non lifting phaggots are up in arms, I do the free weights too. Smith seems more effective though.

There are certainly some unique movements you can do on the smith machine that a barbell can't duplicate.
I never use it as a main movement but more as supplemental or finisher.
Everything from shrugs to calve work and many others.

I mostly avoid it, but I could see it being handy for things I can't do with a barbell too easily. Accessory movements also, but generally I use freeweights and bodyweight unless i'm working around an injury. One great use of the smith is for reverse calf raises, a difficult to stabilize movement using freeweight - and one I consider vital to balanced calf development. Although, our smith does have a nice multi-grip pull-up bar..

I used to use it for shrugs, barbell rows and calf raises on occasion. It's not something I would add to my home gym though.

So odd. You'd have to have either a spotter or monkey feet to get it back on the safety hooks

In my opinion the only justification of owning one is if it's included in what you have on a multi-functioning unit.

For example the Ironmaster IM2000 which has free weight, cable pulleys and smith machine capabilities (if someone was going that route for a half rack setup)...

Or for a functional trainer system which the smith comes included with it, the Inspire FT2.

Other than that I couldn't justify having, or using one. I don't like the un-natural movement pattern of them for most movements.

I wouldn't use one, you can't feel joint wear at all until you have worn right through and hit bone (hyaline cartilage has no nerves), and you'd never know if you're bringing a knee replacement forward from 65 to 55 years old.

Gym I went to for the last two weeks has something similar. The smith machine part moved independently, and you could put the safeties on whenever you want.

I kinda like using it for shrugs and up right rows.

We don't have bars so I use it for Australian pullup and skin the cat.

True for anything you do in life. Not sure how this applies only to a machine.

Really? That's killer, my local gym actually has a Jones but i've never used it for anything. It's right next to the deadlift platform, which I hate cause it's kind of in the way haha. I gotta check it out for somethin.

I've used it a couple of times. The smith machine comes in handy for me when I want to work on pull ups and chin ups because I can reach the bar without trying to hunt down a step stool or block.

That's right, but this machine creates unnatural movement under load.

I bought one years ago for my home gym, with the mindset that I woudn't need a spotter for benches or squats with it. But as years went by and joints starting wearing out I stopped using it for those things due to the 'shearing' motion it seemed to cause on joints. I came close to selling it, but then found it really handy for inverted rows. I can hang Mag Bars or Prime Rot-8s from it for variation too. For these purposes I'm glad I still have it.

Yes, it is the same principle as a Bodycraft Jones smith. I own a Jones club in my home gym for 5+ years but it had been modified a lot by mech6. Great machine both way movement makes it more natural, up/down and front/back. You can also lock it to make it a regular up and down smith machine. If i had to do it again, i would not invest again in that type of equipment. Now that it is that much modified, it would be hard to sell so i guess i will keep it forever...
