Question Optimal handle distance for trap bar?

I used to have a trap bar, but it was very uncomfortable to use, so I sold it.

I'm thinking to give it a chance, because maybe the handles distance was to big for my small frame, and I know a guy who makes trap bars at home in the size what you want.

    Anyone had the same issue?

If I naturaly hang my arms on my sides, the distance between my hands give the optimal width, right?

How about farmer walk handles instead of a trap bar?

    Why that would be better?

I want to do deadlift, lunge, and farmer walk with it.

And I don't have enough plates to balance out two farmer walk handles

You know, if you're shorter on plates, but are open to the idea of farmer's walk handles - you could try some of these miniatures:

    https://www.titan.fitness/mini-farme..._source=google

Easy storage, small footprint, inexpensive, balanced. There's even a version made for standard plates if you have any of those around, or you could pick up some olympic sleeves and have both options available. You'll need to use smaller plates for stuff like lunges and deadlifts, because bigger plates would limit range of motion though. It really depends whether you want a bilateral or unilateral tool for the job.

I did the same thing. My original trap bar had handles at about 680mm (~27 inches) between centres.

The new one is 600mm (~24 inches). The difference seems small but it feels much better.

I would base it off of your regular conventional DL grip width and go from there.
The trap is certainly a little wider than most would grip with regular deadlift.

I don't think there's such a thing as optimal. It's whatever you find comfortable. I'm also probably going to sell my trap bar because I don't find it comfortable. It's unlikely I'll get another.

I had a cheap CAP trap bar, then upgraded to one of those huge York bars with the kickstands. I also found those handles to be just a little too wide for me, and got another CAP bar. Cap bar is about 24 inches between the handles. I forget what the York handles were, but 27-ish sounds about right.

I have narrow shoulders (short collarbones), measured 14 inches between the end of each AC joint. For me my bar is perfect and it's approx 25 inches at the grips, I can measure if you want. Hands end up 6-7 inches away from the edge of my thigh. I don't think it would be good to have them right at your sides, it will be too cramped up.

Attached is a picture of my bar, which isn't technically a trap bar, but it's superior for farmers walks because you don't get tangled if you ever fell over.
