    Barbell vs dumbbell

    Working on general bench strength (3-5 reps ) and wondering if I should be using barbell or dumbell
    Which one will carry over the best?

    For strength, do good old fashioned barbell bench. For accessory work, feel free to use dumbbells. They are uniquely taxing, endless in variation and allow much more freedom of (natural) movement

    Bar without a doubt. If you only stay in that rep range, you won't develop max strength, needs to be higher at lest some of the time.

    Between STANDING dumbbell and barbell, the dbs will activate more muscle fiber since your arms MUST stabilize the DBs and aren’t locked in place like with a barbell. The barbell also MAY hide muscle imbalances, but that is kind of blown out of proportion IMO

    With that said, when DBs start getting heavier (in the 70+ range) it gets harder to clean them into position where as with a barbell it can be places on a rack and simply walked out like a squat. Barbells are also easier to add weight too incrementally.

    Barbell generally allows you to move the most weight, i.e. most strength gains. Dumbbells activate more stabilizer muscles and can limit the total weight you can move.
    The only way to do something is to do it

    i always have someone lift the left dumbbell to the top for me. plus im only lifting 37.5kg atm so i dont have to worry about that much weight yet

    i dont mean to be a contradicting c*nt but just because i could lift more weight i dont see how that will make me stronger- machines for example i can lift more weight

    Machines provide ideal leverage against the weight and tend to isolate the muscles worked. Compound movements build overall strength.
