Anyone else just wing it in the gym?

I've done pretty much every routine under the sun in my 10 years lifting, and am currently just doing whatever the fuk I feel like in the gym, and it feels good.

I start each workout with either squats, bb lunges, or deadlifts, then do one important lift, a press or a row, for 4-5 sets at full intensity, then I just do a couple other exercises at moderate intensity, some back/chest supersets, and if I feel like it, finish off with some accessory work like curls or tri stuff or abs.

It's a relaxing lifting mentality. I'm not trying to get any PRs or anything, just maintaining or slightly strengthening without worrying about it.

3-5 times a week depending, anywhere from 35-50 minutes of lifting, listen to some good tunes, work up a good sweat, get a nice pump, and feel good for the rest of the day.

Being 35 years old, I don't feel any need to get huge/jacked/strong like I used to. I have a beautiful, muscular body and I'm happy to just maintain it and keep my strength.

When I was younger I did the whole notebook thing, tracking progress, I had PR goals, all that. I think every man should go through that phase, but where I am, lifting is just much more enjoyable now.

With this gym mentality, I feel like I will easily keep it up til the day I die.

I never dread going to the gym, always look forward to it and enjoy myself while I'm there.

And when it's warm out I'll run 3-5 miles a couple times a week. Cardio is a great way to clear your mind.

    Anyone else on my wavelength?
    You have glorious wings.

100% what I do as well. Tried pretty much every routine, now I just go for peace of mind, relaxation, "me time", and because I know it's generally healthy. I try to use my knowledge to not be a total idiot, like maxing out on bis and then trying to 1RM deadlifts and then bench for example, but that's about it. Keeps things fresh and interesting and I feel like it's not so much a "workout" as just my time to decompress before or after a day.

I realize at my age I'm probably just about maxed out in terms of gains, no need to devote that time/energy and diet to try and squeeze out that extra 10-15%, it's just not worth it.

Like I said...You have the lower body and you have no upper body, you got a problem building...wait a minute. You have the upper body, and you have no legs, you got a problem building your legs. You have the upper...you have the lower body and you don't have the upper body, the upper body, it is easier to build. So if you have the lower body and you don't have the upper body, it is easier to build the upper body. You have the upper body and you don't have the legs, you got a problem building the lower body... No, you don't understand. You have the upper body, but you don't have the lower body, you got a problem building downstairs. You got the up- legs on the bottom, it is easier to build on the top, so you don't have much as a problem. Yeah.

I do the whole logbook and macro tracking, but I can see why you'd do it that way. Right now I have very specific goals, but after a certain point I think I'll just go to the gym to stay healthy, strong, and muscular. I also just enjoy lifting in general, I love going to the gym, and what you described makes me think you do as well. In a few years I may just wing it, just like you lol.

I've been winging it for years because I've also done every routine under the sun like you srs. Here's why:

    1. Every routine is fundamentally the same when it comes right down to it. In terms of how it works, not so much the exercises.

    2. Progressive overload can come in two forms: lift more weight for the same reps than you did last time or lifting more reps of the same weight than you did last time. I push myself in the gym every time I go to achieve either one of these things naturally by going to failure on every compound lift and most of my accessory lifts if I'm being honest. I am open to hearing arguments against going to failure as I know it can be a controversial topic.

    3. Once you know how exercises work (what joint using, what the muscle group you're working is responsible for) you can pretty much do whatever you want to get the job done srs

Agree. Some have misinterpreted my mentality as lacking intensity. Not true - always important to push yourself and suffer physically and mentally.

I'm not going in there using my phone on the vag machine. I'm pushing it really hard for the first couple exercises. Then the rest is just gravy.
    You have glorious wings.

Im the complete opposite. The longer I have trained the more regimented and calculated I have become. I train with a journal where I write every set, every rep and every weight down for every workout. I consider it one of the most effective tools for making and tracking gains that anyone can give himself.

HAVENT GONE to the gym in a long time but i did for many years...fords fitness, golds, urban active and thats just the fitness gyms...but i never walked through the doors to just wing it. i knew walking in that i had a challenge in front of me ad i welcomed that. of course there were times i didnt want to go we have all felt that...but there is something inside us that makes us get up and go. and there HAS never been one time when i lefti was ot glad that i went. go to just wing it? i think not

I used to wing it, and then I actually started to get serious with lifting. I did a lot of research and critiqued my own body. I developed a workout plan catered around my needs and I've made ridiculous progress so far. If a machine or piece of equipment is in use, I'll think of a different way to hit the same muscle.

If you just go into the gym and wing it then you'll start to lack in certain areas.
