My blood pressure has being do odd thing as of late but I'm told it has to do with meds I take for a lung issue I have. Anyway, while I was investigating my blood pressure issue I read that the new standard for taking blood pressure medication is 140/90.

Well, I knew my BP was fine, the doctor did, as well. It was the paperwork on my exam that had "high" on it.

I believe that anti-inflammatory steroids if that is what you are taking for your lung issue, may affect BP. I hope it's not too serious.

I went to my General Physician this morning for a check-up and went through the normal routine with the nurse, i.e. blood pressure check and weight and height.

Doc gave me the ok and when I got home, I looked at the print-out they gave me.

My blood pressure was: 122/74 No meds at all.

I thought my blood pressure was really good, but the print-out says that I have elevated blood pressure, according to the government. Wat?

I weighed 192 with clothes on this morning, 187 no clothes earlier this morning and my height is 5'11".

My Body Mass Index is 25-29, which according to the government, I am overweight. Wat?

To me, this information is deceptive because for people who workout regularly, it has the potential to be dangerous, as a doctor might prescribe medication when you don't really need it. My doc didn't bring it up, but the print-out did.

If my doctor had brought it up, I would have told him that I workout religiously, so please take that into consideration.

This isn't shocking information except that it is probably safe to say that some people can be over-prescribed if they don't do a little research and IMO it is always a good idea to question a doctor on any prescriptions that have the potential to negatively affect your health.

Many years ago I had to pass a Norwegian Seamens medical (that's oilrigs/ships not semen, watch the spelling). I had bp reading during it which I passed, but next to the examination couch was a trolley with several boxes of surgical gloves and the biggest tube of lubricant I've ever seen, it was like a tube of mastic for building work. I'm still amazed my BP was normal, it certainly didn't make me feel relaxed about what might be in store. Thankfully the gloves and lube never figured in my medical exam.

For most Americans, they are going to get fatter with age, and their corresponding blood pressure needs to be addressed earlier than it has been in the days of yor. Obesity and it's associated comorbidities is at least 70% of my business.

You probably got the scare treatment because you didn't bring him flowers before the prostate exam. Doctors have feeling too! lol

I agree with you, but it was the paperwork and not the doctor that stated I was over-weight. No prescription was discussed.

Mark, they keep changing the "normal" numbers for blood pressure and BMI.
Remember muscle weighs more than fat.
120-129 is "elevated" based on the new charts, but unless it jumps or remains high why worry?

Until bodyfat, exercise type or frequency are a tracked Stat, the programmers have no way to add variables to what is presently a pass fail grade.
