CS brahs, my m8 can't find a job in software engineering (reps 4 input)

    - Graduate from a small state university, 2.97 GPA B.S. in Computer Science
    - Internship in business IT, essentially desk chit
    - Has quite a few programming projects from classes he took.
    - Has work experience in retail and at FedEx, not related to his major.

He's set on software engineering, but having no luck in getting interviews. He's getting rejected left and right (see gif below, where the girl = him, hot dogs = rejections):

I have no idea how careers in CS work, so I'd appreciate any input as to why he's not having luck. Low GPA? Lack of software engineering experience? What should he do? Aim for IT?

My bad, he had more, so I changed it.

He's in a metro detroit city, but he's applying all over the country.

Try Amazon? Friend doesn't have a CS degree and they hired him on as IT and are now paying for all of training for certs, AWS, etc. No one cares about GPA.

I'll recommend he try IT at amazon, but he seems set on software developing/software engineering.

Maybe try to get a contract gig. If he's willing to move he can find something.

*He could get on as a developer at Amazon but he'd have to work his way up. From what I've been told they promote pretty fast.

    Make sure he:

    - knows the language(s)/frameworks they use. Doesn't have to know the framework inside and out if he's applying for an entry-level position, but at least know the programming language.
    - wears a suit to the interview. Everyone in the industry does this, but sometimes entry level devs aren't aware yet.
    - has some okay social skills. The bar is set a little lower, because we're all a little geeky in this industry, but of course there's a breaking point.

He could also try a recruiter. The industry is full of recruiters chomping at the bit for a programmer they can send to their clients. As a bonus, they'll usually help give advice him for the interviewing process if he asks; have him explain his situation, and a good recruiter might help him figure out what he's been doing wrong so far. Remember that they get a few thousand bucks if your friend gets hired, so they have a lot of incentive to make sure he interviews well.

    Unhappy

    Depressing stat time:

6% of all job positions in the US get filled through the online job portal.

    22% through recruiters

    ...And 70% through a network/connection

And entry level is the hardest to gain traction with. There’s just no real skills and no reason to trust someone in that position unless someone else the company trusts says they are worth a shot.

Not sure over there in the US but in Australia, Software engineering is a 3 year undergrad and 2 years Masters, so a 3 year CS graduate isn't going to get a job over the students with an actual software engineering degree.

Literally walked into my first interview, vaguely referenced a guy I knew who happened to work at the company and was offered an internship on the spot with potential to go full time

Sometimes not being able to get hired is not your fault, maybe you are only applying to wrong positions and companies. From my anecdotal experience I have been looking for half a year for a full time job before I got an offer. And not only 1. but 3 at once. Maybe the area in which you are looking for just has too much competition and too little hirers. You may be a good developer but when there are 50 more people trying to get on board, it needs but a one more qualified man to not get hired. Isyour problem you do not get a call back or do you not even get invited to the interview? If it's the latter, try to polish, maybe even put a little white lie in your CV. (like broaden up your previous job title when you have been doing more stuff than the title says you would etc.)

Either he's **** or his university is not respected, or his location sucks.

I've never had to look for a job for more than 8-9 days, and i generally don't have to do much work. Just put my CV on monster and wait.

We had to do some work on his resume. I’ll ask about github, I’m not sure if he has a linkedIn. He has a personal website, but I’m not sure how it compares with other CS grads.

Does getting rejected to quickly after applying to so many positions mean there is a problem with experience, education, skills, or resume?

    yes

If he gets rejected without even going to interviews, it means his CV or resume are really bad

tell him to rewrite everything and make it appealing and beautiful so the HR people dont put it in the trash as soon as they see it

2.97 GPA? Das not it. There's several places that have a requirement (either explicitly or unofficially) of a 3.0 minimum GPA. If he even took like one more blowoff class, he'd be in a lot better shape.

As a guy in kind of a similar boat (3.0 masters GPA before this semester- that's equivalent to a 2.0 undergrad GPA), the only luck I've had is by LinkedIn spamming. Fill out all your profile stuff, let LinkedIn data mine the chit out of you, and they will recommend you jobs. You can import your profile to apply for most of them, so filing an application takes like 5-10 minutes.

I rage-applied to 30 jobs in one night on Linkedin, and set a goal of 3 job applications a day after that. I have about 120 applications out there and it's turned into 3 interview requests, so not bad all things considered. I have a phone screen with an antiair missile design team tomorrow (srs) (no Iran) (they're in Dallas) so wish me luck.

Actually, finding a niche like that is pretty much the best thing I've done so far. I suck at grad school, but 90% of the class is internationals, so by applying for defense jobs I get rid of almost all the competition. And I'm trained in stuff that no US undergrad knows how to do, so there's no pressure from below either. All the calls I've gotten back are from govt or military contractors tbh.

Something's wrong with this picture and I can't say for sure what it is.

The reality is that a lot of self-taught people with no relevant degree and no degree at all are able to find good work in this industry. Is it possible that his resume is too IT-oriented and not showcasing that he really can code? Is it possible that he took bog standard C++ and Java classes and that looks like it's all he knows?

If so, specifying that he's learned a real-world stack might help, even if it's just LAMP, but Ruby and Python are important keywords, too.

Tell him I don't have a BA degree and make 6 figs as a Sr Linux SA. I'm sure it'll make him feel better.

    this

also make a cover letter. Most applicants don't so it's an easy way to separate yourself from the pack.

he should have relevant software on github showing he can plan and build programs from scratch to deployment. Tell him to keep trying, he'll get his foot in the door and it's easier from there on out with experience.

software developers have taken over truck drivers as the #1 in demand job (and it will continue to be in demand). But the problem is they are in demand for quality engineers not newjacks for which there are quite a few (due to bootcamps, code.org, free resources, etc.)

Here is what he needs to do.

    1. Renounce US citizenship and move to India

    2. Get on with one of the many firms that import H1b workers

    3. Wait for Google/Amazon/RandoSiliconeValleystartup to grease some politicians for more H1b permits

    4. Get selected to go to the US and be de facto slave labor for one of these companies

    5. Profit (very slightly)

People need to stop calling it "Software Engineering" I get it, they want to have a nice title but **** off they aren't engineers. The job he's applying for is probably getting outsources to H1B visa dudes for half the pay.

Make sure he's keeping his skills up to par while he's waiting to land a job
