you shouldnt have to be rich (or take massive loans) to get a higher education

and that's the reason student loans should be forgiven.

what kind of country tells its population "if you want to become a high value member of society and develop a good career you have to be rich."

how many of you chose not to go to college because of the cost?

higher education should be a meritocracy, not a privilege of the wealthy. its ironic that the whole point of becoming a doctor or lawyer or whatever is to earn a good living and provide for your family, but its only available to those who are already wealthy to begin with.

anyway trump wont be prez forever and eventually we'll have a dem socialist who will forgive student debt just like the banks and auto industries

You don’t. People made those choices. I worked my way through school, so can they.

Your entire thread is a strawman.

If America wants to catch up with the developed countries of the 21st century they're going to have to start investing in their country and not the middle east. Republicans are simply cuck peasants fighting against their own interests for the benefit of corporate America.

They'll start singing a different tune when it gets to be too late and they wonder what can be done about the problem being shoved in their faces.

Yes because "the middle east" is the reason that higher education costs have ballooned out of control.

Americans don't trust government because you let your government get usurped by corporate power. Reform the system and start investing in the country instead of spending 6 trillion tax dollars with interest on the Middle East. Plus how many of their contractor friends made money from it. All while the peasantry pay for it both in their income tax on their labor and in their literal lives.

America is already lagging behind the developed countries of the 21st century. How bad is the country going to get before something gets done about it?

Two problems I always bring up when this topic pops up:

Crack down on companies requiring degrees for jobs that don’t. They use this as an easy way to weed out candidates but it does nothing but perpetuate the belief that you NEED an degree to get anywhere (because in many cases you do).

I don’t think free education across the board is the way to go. I do think “in need” degrees should be offered for free or heavily subsidized. Some states already to this by paying for school if you agree to stay and work in the state for a number of years.

You a CA brah? I went to a CA state college for my BS in Nutrition and Dietetics and left with around 2k in debt. Went to a junior college for 2 years, worked as a server/bartender, partied, etc. School was around 7k a year at the time. It's totally do-able even today.

You dont have to be rich or take out loans, go to community college then transfer to a reasonable school and get a degree that actually pays for itself. Problem solved phaggot.

Too many kids go to an out of state expensive school and get crap degrees while partying it up and bitch about it after. F them all.

Hay Guys, lets blame Trump for these mostly bastions of marxism and socialism for purposefully putting the majority of their useful idiots in massive debt while constantly jacking up the cost of admission at every turn.

My nephews tuition has jumped nearly 20% since his freshmen year to his senior year to over 70K a year....Trump didnt do that, his high end university, which preaches socialism did.

I didn't say that. The costs ballooned out of control because it was made easy to get student loans so the private institutions increased their prices to match the demand. Try to stick to the facts like I do instead of strawman.

That's another issue indicating a need for serious reform. There are smart people looking into this problem, meanwhile what would republicans ever do about it? They'd prefer getting the government out of it entirely and letting those who can pay for it do so to private institutions of their choosing. While that sounds okay for those who can afford it, it's not necessarily good for the country as a whole, and in the long-term and when compared on an international scale.

Honestly, republicans should just take a seat on the sidelines while the progressives like Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez help usher the United States into the 21st century.

    I'm on this 100%

My initial plan for my kids was a large saving system I had with a series of education investment and tax benefit vehicles, general saving, etc.

When my son started college last fall I told him forget that, go ballz in on student loans. As much as he possibly is allowed to do.

If this BS never passes so be it, we will use the savings to pay them all off.

But my guess is within 10 years it will so why the f should I pay.

And I have enough aside right now to fully fund both my kids wherever they go, not gonna spend a dime of it if I can.

Americans have never trusted government hence why we’re an independent nation and you’re still a commonwealth under the queen of britain(just LOL).

What exactly should our government invest in? The public education system is not in good shape despite budget increases every year, should we subject higher education to the same fate?

Want free school? Work hard enough to earn a scholarship, either through academics or athletics. Don’t wanna work that hard? Then no sympathy when you have to pay the going rate to get an education.

Way to be partisan about it. The gov't is terrible at education, despite having plenty of money to throw at the problem. This isn't a controversial statement.

Well, if you don't have a lot of money and you don't want to take out a loan but still want to go to university you gotta use your big brain to think outside of the box.

For example, a charter flight from the US to Germany costs about 500-600 dollar and university there is free and relatively high quality. Ib4 "But I don't speak German", well many lectures are in English and if you don't have the intelligence to learn a new language in lets say a year then you should ask yourself if higher education is really for you to begin with.

There's so many cheap options + you can work or join the military to get GI Bill, there's no reason you can't get a degree without drowning in debt. The problem is, everybody wants the 'traditional college' experience and 'good' schools and taking out max loan to pay rent and buy a car and $2000 macbook etc.

I honestly think you should, and for only one reason. A lot of people get a degree in like social studies and then end up working as a barista.

If you're not going to use your degree to help you better contribute to society then don't get a degree

Someone explain to me why someone who has no business graduating high school, should then be allowed to go to college?

And what are the consequences of someone dropping out of college? Would their room and board be "free" as well?

Straw man, after your initial assertion that (R) are the corporate whores(I don't disagree) I simply asked you a pretty easy question on who received more money last time around. I think most D are stuck in the 80s in regards to (R) being the biggest/only corporate whore.

Hillary, the D nominee received more Wall St/Big Tech money than Trump and the next nominee, Biden will do the same.

Hillary and Obama have been the biggest corporate whores ever.
