Some people took out a 10 grand loan in the academy, should it be forgiven?

Yes, and the students pay them back. What happens when the students do not pay them back? A shortfall. What's going to make up for that shortfall? I honestly don't know, but I do know that money lent and not paid back just doesn't automatically disappear. If the revenue isn't there, won't the govt have to make it up with either taxes or service cuts, or worst-stick it in the deficit, growing the debt?

This should make you happy sandaltan. I'm on board with this. This is the best possible thing a California liberal govt could come up with. It's efficient and the least wasteful way to give a 4 year education. This education is the $20k education I've spoken of here in the thread, and is totally doable. First, it rewards the low income people that have completed a cheaper 2 year degree. Second, it encourages the smart decision making that is staying in state. Third, it doesn't fund cars and vacations. There is no moral hazard, and no wasted loan interest. In light of this thread, and the chit situations with regards to fukked up loans and interest, this should go a long way to alleviate the financial situations for future students.

    https://www.thereporter.com/2020/01/...niversity/amp/

In yet another push to make higher education more accessible in California, a bill filed in the state Legislature last week would extend the state’s tuition-free college guarantee to four years — and beyond community college — for some students, making it one of the most generous programs in the nation.

Students who earn an associate’s degree for transfer through the California College Promise program could finish their bachelor’s degrees for free at California State University under the legislation, authored by Los Angeles Assemblyman Miguel Santiago.

While the bill must still make its way through the legislative process, it has surfaced at a time when free college has become a hot topic during the Democratic presidential primaries, just a year after California’s liberal governor and Legislature gave community college districts money to waive two years of fees for first-time, full-time students.
    Virtue is its own reward.

    College shouldn't be free.

College debt interest shouldn't also be as gauging as it is.

It shouldn't, but the California system is the best way to do it if you end up going that route. Half those 4 years is spent in community colleges, you don't get the 4 year funds until you get the AA. This is actually pretty smart coming from the Uber liberal California govt.

Compared to simply "forgiving" the debts, it actually is. Think about it-it encourages the best possible choices here so many in this thread have already pushed for:

    Stay in state
    Go to CC first
    Stay at home

No car payments or Cabo spring breaks on the tax payers dime. The fact that to get the funds you have to get your 2 year degree first also separates the wheat from the chaff. No more deciding to go to 4 year, drop after the first or second year and being on the hook for loans with a useless half education.

Also, California used to not charge tuition at all. They weren't the only state. As a conservative, if given the choice I'd rather see money go to education expenses than to loans that balloon to multiples of the actual cost of education. Why should that guaranteed loan even be charged interest? It's stupid, there is no risk, the loan should have an interest rate at maximum the rate of inflation. In addition, we need the best and brightest choosing paths that better our country, and encourage those who are young to excel, not be dissuaded due to costs.

Now if we're going to talk about how the gov't fuks chit up and eventually this will turn into another boondoggle with enormous gov't waste-I agree there. As it is now though, that's the way it is already and I would argue it's worse with loans. The loans encourage inefficient choices, like moving out of state for double the tuition. These colleges are making money hand over fist with out of staters-this will curb that. Less money being wasted by going out of state, more economically wise choices, more money for these students to spend on things that will actually benefit the economy (cars, houses, etc.).

I recommend this to kids/parents all the time. go to a cheap community college and take all the core classes that you can there and then transfer to the college you want to go to if it's more expensive. nobody cares where you took English lit 1000, you'll save a ton of money and it'll probably be easier.

According to surveys, an estimated 20 to 50 percent of students enter college as undecided, and an estimated 75 percent of students change their major at least once before graduation.
imagine picking and attending a school without knowing why you are even going there.

i used to phuck a girl who's dad was paying for her mba and she repeatedly said she didn't even really want it. i quit seeing her for that reason.

my first go round in college I had no idea what I was going for. in fact I was just going to defer being a responsible adult. I ended up getting a pretty good job, started dating a girl and just lost all interest in school. FF to now and I'm going back for 2 reasons. 1. to finally get my degree and get that monkey off my back. 2. get out of my current career. I'm in the type of industry that once you get in it's really hard to get out. hell most of the guys in my office have been with the company 20+ years. I've been here for a little over 7 and I'm the "new guy".

i would wager that most people who go BACK to school or who wait to go to school have a much higher employment rate than 22 year old grads bc they have been dosed w reality.

they also actually try to do well in class. sure some of the kids do but for the most part they're just trying to get by.

hell, my first go at school I ended with 2 Fs. I just flat out didn't care and even when I did well in class it was just because I got lucky or kinda knew enough already. but this time I'm getting straight As in class I most certainly would have failed before and it's not like I'm smarter or anything.

If someone is dumb enough to take out $200k in loans, and is not going into a field where he/she KNOWS they will make enough $$$ to be able to pay that back, I do not feel sorry for them. Nor do I feel others should pay for their stupidity.

undergrad was paid for with bright futures and scholarships and my professional degree tuition was 22k/year for 4 years at a good state school. I knew the cost going in and do fine now, but a lot of kids get absolutely ass blasted with undergrad loans on stupid degrees. kinda feel for them short term, but the constant whining years after falls on deaf ears

That is a mixed bag. Urgency plays a factor. For example I wasn't able to get out of crappy professor classes. I was in 4 classes that did not have a single "A" awarded.

The other factor is responsibility. Do I study for a test or do I go to my kids birthday party?

I finished with a 3.4 Cumulative, which could have easily been a few points higher if I wasn't loaded with 18 credits a semester, while working...

So are you going to use the same logic to buy a house? "I want a $2 million home because I am supposed to get everything I want, but my job doesn't pay me enough to afford the mortgage so I should buy the $2 million home and then not pay the mortgage because unfair".

And you went to an expensive college uh? Money well spent...

I don't see why not.. I mean once the loan just vanishes, nobody has to pay it and we can all live in $2 million dollar homes.

fkin lol at thinking higher education is like buying a house

its like you have no clue that education plays a key role in human, social, and economic development, promotes equality, promotes peace, and increases a person’s chances of having more opportunities in life.

but no, you see it as buying a house

    sad

but then again, people with 12th grade educations probably think that way

    sad
    You borrowed money simpleton.

That would be the basis of comparison lol. You borrow money for a house / you borrow money for your education. At the end of the day guess what... you still borrowed money. Right?

Nod your head up and down for me.

but then again, people with 12th grade educations probably think that way
Yeah, you of all people should really not talk about education bro.
"Do you think SHE actually felt like that was a sexual thing he was doing? She's like 6. Only an actual p3do would think that she thought he was groping her, too."

"Not that it's impossible to touch a minor inappropriately, but it is true that a 6 year old girl will not recognize someone putting a hand on their chest as groping, whether it is inappropriate or not."
