how do i make it not f*ck up my gains

Eat enough food to keep yourself at a TDEE and meet macros. You'll need to out eat the exercise you're putting in. Used to have the same issues with rugby and the amount of running versus American football. Didn't want to lose a ton of weight during rugby season while running 5x as much.
