Red face NASA Employees Hate Him: Intern Discovers Planet on 3nd Day of Internship!

NASA's planet hunter satellite TESS has discovered an exoplanet orbiting two stars instead of one — and it was identified by a high school intern. The announcement of the circumbinary planet prompted comparisons with Luke Skywalker's home world of Tatooine in the "Star Wars" movie series, with its bewitching double sunsets.

But the newly found planet's size alone — it is 6.9 times larger than Earth, almost the size of Saturn — makes it unlikely to be livable. Named TOI 1338 b, it is the only planet in the TOI 1338 system, which lies 1,300 light-years away in the constellation Pictor, and orbits its stars every 95 days.

    ...

    TLDR finds planet

Goes to prove NASA gov't employees clock in-and-out for a paycheck. Imagine a 17yo high school intern cucking you on his third day because he actually gave a chit about his job.

Because they're lying. They don't know. It's supposedly 1,300 light years away, and yet they know more about the planet than the bottom of our ocean.

LOL if you actually believe they actually discovered something.

    1 light year is 6 TRILLION MILES. 1,300 x 6 TRILLION MILES.

so? amateur astromers have been finding planets.. without the resources of NASA behind them.

finding planets in 2020 isnt really a big deal.

The newly discovered planet, though, is probably a gas giant, which has a host of problems in terms of possible life (however this is a somewhat anthropocentric stance. Even the above comment about bones is way too human-centered, who really knows what form life may take).

NASA could literally discover 1000s of planets a day.

Some of you are just plain dumb and will fall for any fuking headline.

LOL if you actually believe they actually discovered something.

    1 light year is 6 TRILLION MILES. 1,300 x 6 TRILLION MILES.

    hahahahahahahahaha
Well they detect planets by measuring the drop in observed luminance from a star when the planet passes between Earth and that star, which also tells us the diameter of the planet, and by measuring changes in the speed at which the star is moving away from or towards Earth. The speed measurement (via gravity tugging on the star) can also allow us to estimate the mass of the planet

And then I think they can use that data to make assumptions about the planet, ie a huge planet with lower mass is probably a gas giant, etc etc
