Isnt cardio just a waste of time?

Does my heart know the difference between a grueling set of squats or a hard run on the treadmill? If you are already lifting hard, arent you already exercising your heart and lungs adequately?

"“Strength training often gets overlooked for its importance in improving cardiovascular health, but it can be a valuable addition in reducing the risk of heart disease,” says Dr. Timothy Miller, a sports medicine physician at Ohio State University's Wexner Medical Center. In fact, research suggests that when it comes to improving certain markers of heart health, strength training is just good – if not better – than cardio."

Cardio is muscular adaptation. So yeah it kinda is a waste of time, unless you like it or want to be well rounded.

If you try to use lifting as cardio, you'll just have a worse lifting session.

No lol, both cardio and strength training are important but you can't cheat and kill 2 birds with 1 stone and pretend a heavy set of squats is the same as a hard 10k run as a workout for your heart, sorry brah.

You can do squats all day but go try and run a mile see how it goes. Cardio is great. Builds endurance, healthy for the heart.
Extra endurance gets carried over to your regular lifts as well since you'll get less tired, need less long breaks etc.
And it burns calories which is great if you're cutting although it's easier to eat less.

cardio burns calories and can help you get leaner and lower body fat %. i lift every day (upper body only) but also walk 7 miles/day outside.

if I dont leave the gym looking like I jumped in a swimming pool, I dont feel like I really worked out. Every day I either: run 2 miles in 14:30 or less, bike 10 miles in less than 30 minutes, or stair master for 20 minutes on the highest level Im capable of. Cuts water weight, makes you look much more cut.

You can do a cardio with weights (crossfit, p90x, insanity, etc), but that's more of a conditioning workout than strength training.

I completely disagree. I've been on both sides of the spectrum. Squats absolutely suck ass, but are in no way shape or form a replacement for dedicated cardio.

Back when I was a cardiocel, I did squats and the squats beat my ass and left me winded after every set. I also would get winded climbing long flights of stairs (200+ steps). Now I'm a cardiochad and squats and deadlifts don't really wind me. I end at least one run a week with a crazy amount of stair climbing in the trails. My heart rate doesn't really shoot up to an uncomfortable rate while climbing these stairs, and after I'm done my heart is like "ight bet" and immediately starts to decrease.

    My opinion:
All the cardiovascular benefits this doctor touted from strength training can be gained from just doing cardio. If you're looking for cardiovascular benefits, choose the exercise that has your heart rate working a decent level above your resting and for the longest time. 45 min run > 45 min workout (of which at least 50% will be resting). If any lifting elitists disagree, let's organize a 5k and see who wins.

at our school in gym class we get grades based on our overall cardio vascularity (how fast we run 5x5, small marathon around a big lake etc), and they dont grade the strength at all, its so unfair because all the skinny phaggots who have no fat or muscle always get the best grades while somebody who is more strength focused and can do like 20 pull ups and 100 push ups will get a worse grade because he cant run as fast as the others

OP, you're making a common mistake in thinking cardio gains are mainly in the heart and lungs. They're not, they're in the muscles themselves. That's why 'cardio' exercises have a very poor crossover.

Cardio builds muscular endurance. You won't achieve that doing sets of squats for 10 reps then having a rest.

Humans are designed for cardio. We are extremely efficient users of calories. We can outrun and outwalk virtually every other animal on earth. Sure, there are faster, but you can literally outwalk a cheetah so that it collapses and you have a fur coat.

^Fun fact: the cheetah is the fastest animal, but can only maintain its top speed for something like 10 seconds.

Pretty sure a cheetah would **** a man up if he walked up and tried to make a fur coat out of it.

Pretty lame hunting strategy. Just walk them into exhaustion.

I think the biggest misconceptions about dedicated 'cardio' sessions are:

    A. It burns fat.

    and

    B. It is certain to make you live longer.

As long as you aren't doing it for those reasons ^^, have at it.
