The Chase Sapphire Reserve Annual Fee Is Increasing

Fuark I was gonna get it in May. JP Morgan Chase is trying to make their CSR profitable so they are increasing the annual fee.

Ever thought the high bonuses and huge perks offered by the Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card sounded too good to be true? It sounds like the honeymoon period is coming to an end: The annual fee for the card is going from $450 to $550 this year.

Rumors of an increase were confirmed by The Points Guy, which learned that the increase will start on January 12. If you already have the card and are slated to renew before April 1, 2020, you’ll be able to renew at the $450 rate; after April 1, everyone will pay the $550 annual fee.

The news comes on the heels of Chase and DoorDash announcing a partnership that gives some cardholders, including Reserve customers, access to a free DashPass membership.

This may make me look for a new travel card.

The Lyft and Doordash deal might make it worth it for some folks, but I think that membership only lasts 1 year from what they made it seem.

At this point, premium credit cards are basically only worth it if you can expense your business travel expense on them versus the Company AMEX or if you're able to consistently spend and travel hack effectively enough to get business class seats on flights. Airline miles are pretty much the same price as paying for cash in domestic economy, priority pass/centurion lounges are overcrowded because everyone and their mother has the CSR or Platinum nowadays, and Marriott Gold/hotel status is even more useless now that SPG is gone and Hyatt devalued their program.

I myself am considering going to a cashback strategy, and this is coming from someone who travels weekly for work and has the CSR + AMEX Platinum. Even airline status is super devalued because it's harder than ever to get and the perks aren't as good when you get there.

Every year I threaten to cancel, and every year they either waive the fee altogether or reduce it. Last year I paid $100 for the annual fee. It's a pain in the ass but worth it for my favorite credit card. Use it for literally everything.

CSR holder checking in. Honestly 100 bucks isnt that big of an issue. Since October I've gotten an addition 700$ in travel rewards, and thats not counting the 300 travel credit they hook you up with. If you travel alot with work it'll pay for itself still.

Tried threatening to close account on a Amex Plum card unless they removed the fee. They wouldn't oblige even though i used to put a few hundred thousand on that card per year.

Capital one and Chase on the other hand always take away the fees for me. Not to mention they are way better cards. My newest capital one gives $2,000 back for first 50k plus 2% on all transactions.

I also recently opened a standard Chase Ink Card and they gave me a 61,000 credit limit. Seriously whats the point of Amex? Dont think that reserve card is that great either they are just trying to lure amex customers

Fuk this coupled with the fact i make a lot less now (thus spend less on it), makes it muchhh less appealing when many no-fee cards out there are still pretty good.

And the Denver lounge is out too on priority pass. That alone makes me want to cancel it.

Chase Ink Preferred is a great card and an amazing intro bonus.

Only reason I got an AMEX Platinum is my sister is military and she has me as under the family plan and her fee is waived.

Also got a Chase Sapphire Preferred but IDK what premier card I will get in 2020 if any.

There are rumors that Chase are losing a lot of money on the Sapphire Reserve. The annual fee increase was only a matter of time.

That's only to be expected with the spike in credit card hacking culture. I didn't know chit about credit cards just in 2015. Right around 2017 more and more credit card hack and just personal finance blogs in general got significantly more visibility and now ERbody on dat der travel rewards time. If you have a credit score under 650 in 2020 you're just a potato.

BTW the Chase Sapphire Preferred just rolled out the DoorDash subscription for its card holders so IDK why Chase has marketed that adding this to the CSR was a huge perk.

It's like they're trying to get more people to choose the Preferred which doesn't make sense unless they were losing money on the CSP, which also doesn't make sense.

Do you also use the Freedom Unlimited or regular Freedom at all? Looked into it but couldn't decide if that would be too beneficial to me over my current cash back route.
