Glacier park removing "glaciers will be gone by 2020" signs

    ....well this is awkward.

"Montana’s Glacier National Park is being forced to remove all signs that read “glaciers will all be gone by 2020,” after the doomsday scenario didn’t happen"

In the late 90’s and early 2000s, scientists predicted that man-made global warming would cause melting glaciers, leading to rapidly rising sea levels that would sink coastal cities and towns.

The more dire forecasts have proven to be totally inaccurate and some glaciers are now growing.

Back in June, NASA reported that the Jakobshavn Glacier in western Greenland had thickened and “has grown for the third year in a row.”

The glacier prediction is by no means the only forecast global warming alarmists have got spectacularly wrong.

At the end of the 70’s, climate experts said that a new ice age was coming. It didn’t happen.

Al Gore’s doomsday warning that the Arctic would have ice free summers by 2013 didn’t happen either.

Paul Erlich’s prediction that hundreds of millions of people would die of starvation due to crop failure by the 1980’s also didn’t happen.

The 2004 prediction that major European cities would be underwater and that Britain would be plunged into a Siberian climate by 2020 didn’t happen.

I think a lot of people forget or don't know about the Ice Age hysteria that occurred. There are always manufactured crisis, just like "Peak Oil" in the 90s. I'm an Ice Age fan myself, considering geological history points to the Earth undergoing cyclical long periods of glaciation. Glad I live in Arizona.

I remember. I remember lying in my bed worrying about starving to death due to there not being enough food to feed the almost 5 billion people on the planet, while simultaneously freezing to death due to the ice age, or else feeling my eyeballs melt down my face as I perish in a nuclear fireball. Gee thanks.

47 and still incapable of doing research.

I’m Switzerland, glaciers have receded 10% in 5 years. Montana has lost nearly 40% on average. But because these poor predictions didn’t accurately predict full melting, you dismiss what is actually occurring.

I’m not saying we go back to living in the ice age, or signing a Paris accord, but to ignore real facts is just moronic.

We're taxing as many people as we can to avoid this scenario. Make sure you do your part and contribute. Our battle against the climate has just begun.

yes and it remained a "scare" because CFC production was quickly banned and phased out in seriously every single country on the planet.

It can be a real thing and worthy of implementing changes to reduce it, doesn’t mean we have to completely tank our economy to do so..which is basically what proponents of the green new deal are arguing for

    This is bad news.

Indication we aren’t making enough progress to prevent increased glaciation, which would be way more detrimental to humans long term than increasing our average temperatures enough to completely prevent anymore dangerous glaciation.

I wonder how many people have any idea what's actually in the GND. Much of it has nothing to do with climate, and is just AOCs wishlist for Medicare, federal jobs guarantee, college etc. It's more parts "New Deal" and less parts "Green".

And most of the green stuff is, from both a climate science and engineering perspective, way off base. Like hitting net zero emissions in 10 years - that is neither possible nor necessary to keep temperature increase to desired levels based on projections. It also completely omits nuclear, which is stupid.

Again you have to sift through the usual politician crap. The Dems that say they support the GND, don't actually support lots of whats in there. Biden is staunchly opposed to Medicare-only healthcare, yet claims he supports the GND, for example.

This “scientist predicted” crap is so ridiculous. There are thousands of climate scientists around the world. It’s not difficult for some to make a prediction that didn’t pan out. You can do that for quite literally any scientific field.

Same with the ice age nonsense being spewed ITT. NEVER was global cooling a scientific consensus. Ever. Period. There were 2 or 3 labs that published some papers suggesting it might be happening. The vast majority of scientists never supported it. Stop getting your info from ****ing Readers Digest.

Not true either, there was a period of increase (2014-2017) in CFC emissions from Eastern China recently which slowed down the rate of net global CFC emission decline (but it was still declining). That obviously needs to be addressed. But even with that recent spike global emissions have continued to decline thanks to the Montreal Protocol and thus the ozone issues were avoided.

China have been hitting their CO2 emissions targets well in advance and have been investing massively into renewable so you can't just use "muh China" to dodge all responsibility.

And this is what I always ask of people whenever they cough up some random climate change prediction that apparently didn't work out: Cite the research that these predictions are supposedly based on. Ie. cite the actual data rather than the headline of an MSM article, the words of a politician or some off the cuff comment from someone in a vaguely related field.

Yeah there have been some aspects of the data itself that have predicted things incorrectly. But it's worth remembering that this also includes underestimations - for example the majority of climate models from back in the day significantly underestimated sea level rises by a factor of 2-2.5.

On the whole though, the models themselves have been pretty accurate wrt temperature rise (Oct 2019 paper):

    Nothing

And I mean nothing effects climate more than earths angle and distance from the sun.

This is the simple most direct reason we go into and out of ice ages with exception to a few random short term calamities.

The good news is our environment temperature increase may have been successful, we still need to strive for more c02 output- long way to go

Humans may have prevented super ice age

Our impact on Earth’s climate might be even more profound than we realise. Before we started pumping massive amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, the planet was on the brink of entering a semi-permanent ice age, two researchers have proposed.
Had we not radically altered the atmosphere, say Thomas Crowley of the University of Edinburgh, UK, and William Hyde of the University of Toronto in Canada, the current cycle of ice ages and interglacials would have given way in the not-too-distant future to an ice age lasting millions of years.
    https://www.newscientist.com/article...super-ice-age/

This is another interesting article for people into actual science of this....

When researching why we had such a massive drop in co2 to look at the plate boundary of the Himalayas.

    Lol

    Wtf???

    They did

    You know that though

Men’s impact on climate causes a global temperature increase

But it’s always never enough to prevent the coming ice age- in every single respectable published peer reviewed model.

You’re missing the point. No one is suggesting that there aren’t cycles in the climate. Of course these cycles have been driven by factors not related to humans. The climate has literally been changing on earth for billions of years. That doesn’t mean that humans aren’t contributing significantly today. At no period in earth’s history for which we have data has the temperature been increasing as fast as it now. We’re talking 1,000x faster than at K-T boundary. It can only be explained by anthropogenic causes and the models and proximate mechanisms do a damn good at explaining it.

Are you honestly dumb enough to think this aspect is just overlooked by the thousands of PhD scientists who study climate change?
