    03 Tundra Transmission Shot

My 03 Tundra with 142K miles transmission is done. About 3 years ago the tranny cooler blew up in the radiator. I'm shocked it made it this long. Was planning on selling it before this point in time but here I am. I've put a ton of work into this truck. CV joints, timing belt, water pump, headers, has $1K left of rubber (KO2's) just replaced all the brakes, calipers and rotors. Its been kinda a lemon. It's nickname is the black hole because its black and its been a money pit.

I'm officially moving on with this truck. Question is, do I sell it as is or do I replace the tranny first? I was quoted $3400 for a tranny with one year warranty. Quoted $750 + any parts if I bring him a tranny but no warranty. Truck is worth roughly $7500-$8000 with a working transmission. It is a Tundra and people love them. Its a nice looking truck as well.

Anyone ever sell a vehicle with a tranny out?

I hate this BS, been dealing with ever since I bought it.

It's always easier to sell a running vehicle.

Agreed for sure. I'm kinda at the point of taking more of a loss and just get it out of my hair. Any ideas how much no tranny kills the value? For round numbers say I could get $10K out of it with a working tranny. What is it worth without one? $5 or so?

My Tacoma has fared much better. Other than brakes, tires, filters and fluids:

    120k upper ball joints

    140k a/c compressor

    160k water pump and radiator

    170k lower ball joints

Yup, The issue was the tranny cooler blew up in the radiator which sucked radiator fluid in the tranny. When that happens usually the tranny gets only a couple months before they are done. Water in tranny destroys the inside. This Tundra made it 3 years which is kind of a testament to how good the Tundra tranny's are.It showed no signs of going out or I would have traded it in before. What chaps my arse is a $80 external tranner cooler and this would not have happened. Why they do it that way it beyond me.

If I were in your shoes I would likely fix it while trying not to break the bank to do so and sell it ready to drive... as stated you always get more money out of it that way.

But , listing it AS IS would be free.99... price it fair and keep firm... whats the worst that can happen??

AC Compressor sucks, that should not have gone out. After saying that my Tundra had the entire AC system replaced right before I bought it at 100K miles.

I flat out got a lemon, you roll the dice and sometimes you lose. I have had really good luck on all my other vehicles before and I have always bought 10-15 year old cars. Zero major repairs ever so I figure I was due. I bought a 2018 F150 last night. 100K mile bumper to bumper warranty makes me feel a little warm and fuzzy. Although I'm sure getting a warranty claim done is like trying not to get screwed over on a insurance claim.

I have a feeling I'll likely have to fix it after trying to sell it and only getting serious low ball offers. Makes sense as I would not buy a truck with no tranny. I figure maybe I can get lucky and find a mechanic who can do it himself for $500 (price of a junk yard tranny that works) and he just saved $2500+ or how ever the numbers work. Something like that. Maybe thats a pipe dream by me. I figure its worth a try and if all else fails fix it and sell it. And yes, AS IS will be written on the paper work 10 times for zero confusion.

Given that it’s a Toyota and their rep for reliability, this is one of the very rare instances where you could get away with selling as-is. Just be clear in your description of what caused the failure, and how long it lasted.

A lot of guys who buy Toyota’s for their reliability wont have a problem with putting their own transmission, and then knowing they won’t have to worry about it failing in the future.

With my luck on this truck, a new tranny will take it to 300k miles. The engine is good, I've replaced so much its dam near new all around.

Pour some Lubegard in the transmission. That may make it work temporarily to give you enough time to sell it as a running truck.

Yeah try to pull a fast one on someone else and phuck them over! People like you are why it’s sketchy to buy a used car. You are absolute scum

Some of my mechanic friends will do things like that, put it up for sale at a number your comfortable with and hope for the best. If it doesn’t sell put a tranny in

I’d buy the parts and do it myself, not sure how handy you are but usually a rebuild kit costs around $150-$250 the rest is labor.

If I was trading it in I might consider it. I could do this for the fact that the new buyer could see it runs and drives great, just needs a new tranny.

I wish I had the time and space. I do not have either. Plus I'm in the middle of completely remodeling my bathroom. If I had a heated shop I would for sure try and tackle it. I am handy, never done a transmission before but its not rocket science. I'm really looking to get rid of it, give a guy a decent deal if he wants to put one in himself and drive it for years to come.

I blew the head gasket on a WRX years ago. I used the Blue Devil head gasket sealer in a bottle and the head gasket held. Then I sold it to a used car dealer. I figure the used car dealer has the resources to deal with the new owner when the problem comes up.

Fuk, Sorry man. Toyota's are known to have good tranny's. We just got lemons.
