Next project, Cybex 5460 preacher curl. I think I will repaint it, probably with white appliance paint as has been suggested in some other threads, but may use black. Pads will be black vinyl. I don’t think I will be able to keep it since it takes up a lot of space and not sure I even want to do preacher curls. The UHMW sleeves are at least $25 each so I’ll either just use plain strips in black or uHMW channels from McMaster. The also sell UHMW tubing which I might use to cover the pegs.
How do I remove the pop pin, I think it is just unscrew the knob and slide out but I could not get it off. It is probably lock tighted on. I have some PB blaster soaking it to see if I can get it loose.

Bonus pic of my butt, which I cooked overnight.

I was wondering what you were up to looking for parts... That preacher has seen some use..

I wonder how farm implement paint holds up? It might be interesting to paint something metal with this and appliance paint and see which holds up and looks better. I would think farm paint might resist chipping better. Way back when we had white appliances, I chipped the paint on the stove with a salt shaker is why I question appliance paint.

Thank you, had not heard of the farm paint before. It’s going to take me a while to get the surface prepped so I have time to order some.

Worth a try. Side by side test with that epoxy appliance paint.

Refurb in progress. I worked on the frame for a bit with a mouse sander and grinder with paint stripper wheel. My intent is not to remove all of the powder coating, primarily focusing on the worst areas that sanding is not smoothing out. Once you get started though it’s hard to stop. I still can’t get the pop pin knob off and plan on keeping the cybex sticker with SN intact.

I was going to order 6 new bolts but decided to just wire wheel the ones that were in place.

“Original” pad. When I pulled the vinyl off it was obvious the red pad was a replacement. There were some old staples with what appeared to be blue vinyl.

One of these days I’m going to pull the trigger and get an industrial sewing machine, maybe one from sailrite. This one does the job though.

New seat pad cover is finished. It needs to be stretched a bit and stapled in place.

I’m not sure what I’ll do with the plastic frame guards. McMaster has $25 shipping for UHMW strips. I need to clean up the seat post which has some rust spots and figure out what to do with the bar supports.

    Thank you.
Doesn’t come off with sander unless loose, but new paint will stick to the sanded powder coating. Angle grinder with paint stripper disc takes it off like butter. Areas with a lot of rust need the angle grinder I think, but once you get started with it it’s hard to stop. Very satisfying

Thank you, on spread. Got home in time to paint, used the white appliance spray paint. I read a review that someone got a blister from the nozzle button. It was a serious pain in the finger. I wish I would have taken the powder coat off completely in the back of the uprights, but it looks really good.
I need to decide what I’m going to use to protect the uprights (UHMW) and the bar rest pegs. Would also, like to get the pop pin apart, thinking about cutting the knob off. Sorry for sideways pics.

It's a pain, but if you want to make the bolts look nice and shiny/new, I coat many specialty bolts with the Birchwood Perma blue, let them sit overnight, then wipe them down with thinner and spray a light coat of clear gloss over the bluing (just cheap Rustoleum rattle can clear). I do batches of fasteners (like 30 at a time), including raw ends of bolts that I have shortened in length.

The bolts look factory fresh without the clear coat, however the etching (acid???) process in the bluing causes rust to form faster than if you just left the bolts raw steel to begin with, so I seal them with clear. These are a few bare (freshly ground) steel parts for my gym that I recently coated with Perma blue, then clear coated. It's funny that the carbon plate steel and the hardened alloy bolts took on different colors using the same tube of Birchwood and identical application process. Even the sanding swirls I left with the grinder show through (which looks kinda cool). Your results may vary.

Nice! The wire wheel works like magic. For the reverse hyper I just bought all new hardware. For this there are 6 bolts, Allen drive. 2 are under the seat, 2 on back of bad, 2 behind the uprights lower down. So not the most noticeable locations. I’ll polish these with flitz and see how they look. The two for the bar rests were 1/2” and rusty so I soaked the heads in vinegar and the rust melted off. If I keep the bench I’ll likely order new hardware with my next boltdepot purchase.

Going to try this out, started working on them already. New guards are $30 each. I have a wool wheel on order.
I think this video is the best one on YouTube for plastic restoration.

I wish I had used my blue vinyl since I think I might keep it. I need to make a wear cover and finish up a few other things. Notice that I save the original Cybex tag with serial number.
Making the preacher cover was a bit of a challenge for me.

    Thank you both, on spread.
I think I’m going to clean up the bar rests some more and put some clear soft tubing on them. Still working on the UHMW. Tempted to just buy new but then it would take away from my refurb.

I’m going to get some Cybex decals but otherwise think I’m finished. Never could get the knob off the pop pin and think I could do better with the UHMW. I put some clear plastic tubing on the bar rests which worked out well. Wish I had used my blue vinyl to match since I think I’m going to keep it for a while.

Didn’t try my rackable curl bar yet

    Thank you.
I’m not sure of the brand, had it for over 10 years. It’s just a cheap bar, I suspect it may be cap. Has pretty good knurling and bends. I have not used it in a while since I have a rackable curl bar and don’t even use curl bars often.

That is why I asked. The bends look right..
The uhmw plastic looks good in pics. Did the appliance paint impress you enough to use it again?

We are looking at late march for new house. Then I have room for a lot more stuff. Possibly some refurb machines. I need some diversion from covid and politics. Depresses me.

Looking at 1200sq ft of this. What do you think?

The appliance paint worked great. Prepping the surface is key.

I am not a fan of those tiles, my parents put them in their garage. If you are thinking of using them for gym space I would not. Use rolled rubber if possible.

Were the ones they used hard plastic or soft rubber? (do they clack when you walk on them?)The current gym I have is the hard plastic. That was a poor choice, except it looks nice. I just can't do a black floor.

They have plastic but I think they have replaced it.
Maybe try Rolled rubber with high fleck color %. Or there are the 2x2 tiles that are grayish in color. Maybe 1” thickness and not cheap but look really good. Check out legendfitness showcases/pro college and high school.

Very slow. I want to buy a pec fly that looks rough, but the seller is not responding to any messages. Have a few work things coming up so time will be tight for me anyway. Happy holidays.
