    Third Time's A Charm

After Bodyhard posted his photo from his lost time, I promised I'd supply my own "before" picture. To make a long story short, at the end of last August I was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in my appendix, which was spewing diseased sludge into my abdominal cavity. On October 24, I underwent surgery to clear it all out. I was in the hospital for two weeks, came home spleenless and 15 pounds lighter, and had to baby myself up until this past weekend. On Friday I got the all clear to start lifting again, and I began a new workout cycle last night.

I have intense DOMS right now, and I was pretty weak under the bar, but nothing unexpected, and I'm happy to be getting at it again.

I started a new thread in the workout journals section, and I've posted two photos: One in August a couple of days before my diagnosis, and one on Sunday, just before my return to lifting. I've got a long way to go, but I've now begun the journey to getting there!

    Here's the thread:

Elrond Hubbard, Third Time's A Charm
I'm out, standing in my field.

If I'd heard you'd been sick, but decided not to train again, I'd have been very worried.

But the fact that you're back training again... You've already got it beaten.

You'd be worried, I'd be worried, my wife would be worried...

When I started, she wasn't sure I'd stick with it. Now she's a true believer. Training for me has had only upsides. It has made me better in every way. I can't see how giving it up could ever be construed as a good thing.

I've heard about that, and it's a good thing, but I wonder if in part its value may depend on who's administering it. When I was diagnosed with throat cancer, I was already training, and already eating well, but I didn't know how I should behave in the interval prior to training. My doctor's advice was to "eat, eat a lot. Get fat!" He said "You'll lose lots of weight during treatment." I ended up losing way more than either of us expected, and the 10 or so extra pounds I put on turned out to have been exceptionally valuable.

For this last one, the doctor didn't give me any specific dietary advice, but knowing that he was going to be cutting into my abdomen the last thing I wanted was to give him more abdominal fat to have to navigate. So I kept my weight stable until the surgery. I continued training right up until the day before I left home for treatment. I have no doubt it helped tremendously.

Just goes to show that the right kind of pre-treatment plan is going to vary depending on the individual case. But yeah, I think strength training should be a part of all of it, if possible.
I'm out, standing in my field.

    64 and still a newbie.

That would be my advice. I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma late 2011, I went from 190/195 to under 160 lbs.

Thank you so kindly, Louise. It's made it so much easier to have some of the best people in the world supporting me, helping me, and cheering me on. I sure didn't come close to doing anything by myself.

I would think what I went through is nothing compared to that. You seem to have been doing really well, definitely a credit to your own attitude and hard work!

My best friend had something called pseudomyxoma peritonei, it sounds a bit what you were describing. It's extremely rare as well.

I don't know if any worse, likely just different challenges.

Not much you can do but buck up and give it all you got. Can't be a pussy after seeing too many stories of children battling various cancers and keeping a positive attitude.

That's the bottom line. I figure there's always somebody who's got it worse than me, and that somebody is probably dealing with it better than I would.

Yes. That was like over ten years ago, and she hasn't had any other surgeries since then. She is crazy active, travels around the world etc.

When it happened to her, I did so much research about it, much more than her haha..

But nowadays we barely even mention it anymore. I hope you get well soon as well.

Really good to hear, Cass. My wife was the same. She researched and scienced the hell out of this thing, and I pretty much just went with her knowledge, although I did read up on the basics.

All the best to her. I'm gonna be fine... I think I pretty much am already.
