I feel like it's because everybody is thinking "does he still have it" and "is he still relevant" and are kind of...indifferent until he is.
If he wins, i guarantee the next fight will be huge/hyped on a good card. this is testing the waters to see if he can hang (which he should be able to)

“I’m full of f*****g energy, man. You know what I mean? I’m feeling real good. There’s no pain, no stiffness. I’m loose, I’m supple, I’m energetic, I’m fast, I’m dangerous. And that’s it. So, happy days.” – Conor McGregor - UFC 246 Embedded: Vlog Series - Episode 1 - UFC - Ultimate Fighting Championship

“For me, it’s not about money. I’m in a position now, I have forever money.” “Too much money and not an awareness of it can be dangerous.” “All that means nothing. It’s me. I’m going in there fresh, sharp, fast, light, dangerous, powerful, and full of energy.” “I might not be perfect, but with a good sleep and a full belly, I’m damn close.” – Conor McGregor - Conor McGregor on UFC 246, Khabib, Mayweather | Extended Interview | Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show - ESPN MMA

This 100% Cowboy has the tools and can utilize a grappling gameplan for conor...but it's cowboy, i think he said it himself that he's not gonna do the "boring" route, and gonna give the fans what they want.
I just wished this went down after cowboy ****ed up perry and they tried to make it with conor...instead we get a cowboy who hasn't even had a good 3 months to just rest(decmber, jan ish is training) after getting clocked by justin, against a fresh connor. It's all a plan to get conor the belt again"You can train as hard as you want to, but without the right fuel supporting your training and recovery, you will never see the results that you should."-Iron Man
Oh by the way...Size f*cking matters, in everything. Don't believe the hype. Size f*cking matters. Size DOESN'T matter to people who don't have any size, that's why they're like "oh size doesn't matter". SIZE, GIRTH, THICKNESS, EVERYTHING. Its a game of inches in life..add up all those inches, Victory muthaf*cker!-Greg Plitt

Conor predicts that he'll make $80M for the Cowboy fight and that he made $50M for the Khabib fight. Crazy! We've come a long way from TUF 1!

well obviously its a more normal fight instead of fighting a bigger guy, or the best boxer ever, or the hardest counter to his style possible in khabib.
so obviously its set up to set an updated baseline of where his lazy ass is now and how much of the skills he still has.
Donald is good because he should be able to beat him if he is still as skilled as he used to be, but also Donald has the potential to make something happen too so its not a complete can hes fighting.
its a pretty good test to see where he is at, if he truly still has the skill he should win but if he just took too much time away from the workout game then Donald might win.
its also important to win in a dominant and convincing fashion if he does to re-bolster the mystique. if he just does average and kinda barely does whatever and Geta decision, that would still be a lot of mystique left on the table and kind of a net loss of draw power.
him winning handily would support the underlying idea that 145 Connor is still official cannon and the rest were unwindable exhibition fights where he tried to reach for the stars and fell short which is a big bold part of his fame in the first place.
so if he wins this “winnable” fight easily its all good but if he doesnt look good out there or loses it loses that mystique both for now and the future but even retroactively a little because a real alpha wouldn't stop lifting or lose his savage fighting IQ just because they got rich so it kinda makes him seem like a ******* trying to cash in and not do the work it takes to fight well.

I'm excited for this fight. Both of these guys go into the cage to give the fans a fight and put on a show win or lose.
I'm a big fan of Cowboy (how can you not be) and am very happy he is getting this fight, and paycheck, as kind of a reward for everything he has done in his career. He has earned it, but it will be a tough matchup to win for him. Obviously Cowboy's biggest chance is to catch Conor with the head kick that is responsibly for most of his knockout wins, but I'm sure Conor knows that is will be well prepared.
I have not been a big fan of Conor's previous negative antics but have been very impressed with how he is conducting himself this time around. Before the Khabib fight he definitely looked like he was not all there and going through some pretty serious substance abuse issues. Now he looks very much in control of himself, very professional, and well prepared for this fight which I think makes him very hard to beat.

Fuc it, the fight will tell, but Conor being so nice and confident and Cowboy and all his stand and bang bullchit makes me think only one thing.
Dana- "Cowboy you are washed up and nearly finished in the UFC, you ain't getting any younger and you blow through money like there is no tomorrow....but here is an offer.... you take a fight with Conor macgregor and throw the fight, we'll pay you millions and guarantee you another few fights in the UFC which will guarantee you a few more million, we'll induct you into the hall of fame and you spend the rest of your days scuba diving and chilling with your son. Either that or you get another few chitty fights and pennies as usual and end up working in Macdonalds when you are an old man"
Cowboy- "Deal"
I hope i'm wrong

The venue sold out in minutes. MINUTES.
Say what you want but those numbers speak volumes.
As for the change in attitude, Conor has some hurdles to get over with consideration of the press over the past year or so. Combine that with Cerrone being one of the most liked fighters on the roster, it would be more harmful than beneficial for conor to be an ass hole."It won't get better, just different."
“Yeah, that's what the present is. It's a little unsatisfying because life's a little unsatisfying.”
Bring back ****got, ****got .
