China’s Fiber Broadband Internet Approaches Nationwide Coverage; US Lags Severely

Another example of China's dominance in the 21st century.

here's a thread with a bunch of cultists saying we shouldn't force the ISP giants to do anything they don't want to do.
    https://forum.bodybuilding.com/showt...hp?t=177806861

Another example of the weakness of the American right.

    https://broadbandnow.com/report/chin...nwide-coverage

Who is winning in the information age? The question has been asked from many different perspectives, but one undeniable truth is that in the near future, economic development will be increasingly predicated on national access to robust, future-proofed internet infrastructure.

Many developed and developing countries seem to be fully aware of this, but perhaps none have the same level of ambition that has fueled China’s aggressive rollout strategy over the past seven years.

In 2013, 17 percent of consumers in both China and the U.S. had access to a fiber internet connection. Fast forward to 2019, China’s penetration has jumped to 86 percent while the U.S. is only at 25 percent.

While America continues to suffer from an immense digital divide, China’s government has made incredible progress building out a state-sponsored super network of fiber optic connections. This infrastructure will allow the country to take early advantage of some of the most impactful applications resulting from the fourth industrial revolution.
China is a leader in many things in the 21st century, from AI, surveillance, renewable energy investments to their internet grid.

'Unlike America, virtually all of the access points that make up the internet “backbone” in China are state-owned, with private providers only able to lease out bandwidth from the government. This complete control over the infrastructure has played a pivotal role in its expedient rollout, with the country investing billions of dollars into the project over the past two decades.

The communist government’s plans extend beyond its own borders as well; the Belt and Road Initiative includes plans for direct investment in infrastructure spanning nearly 70 different countries, potentially giving China a vice grip on internet innovation if left unchecked by the West.

CHINA LEADS IN 5G DEPLOYMENT AS WELL

China’s fiber infrastructure deployment is impressive in its own right, but providing wired services to Chinese citizens does not appear to be the only goal underpinning the concerted expansion efforts. The nation also has grand plans for 5G. The high-speed wireless service was activated in 50 major markets on November 1st, ahead of a scheduled 2020 launch. It is clear that this aggressive strategy is designed to help the nation become a trendsetter in technologies that will likely redefine humanity over the coming years.'

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is a global development strategy adopted by the Chinese government in 2013 involving infrastructure development and investments in 152 countries and international organizations in Asia, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas.[1][2]

The leader of the People's Republic of China, Xi Jinping, originally announced the strategy during official visits to Indonesia and Kazakhstan in 2013. "Belt" refers to the overland routes for road and rail transportation, called "the Silk Road Economic Belt"; whereas "road" refers to the sea routes, or the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road.[3]

Formerly known as One Belt One Road (OBOR) (Chinese: 一带一路, short for the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-century Maritime Silk Road (Chinese: 丝绸之路经济带和21世纪海上丝绸之路 )[4]), it has been referred to as the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) since 2016 when the Chinese government considered the emphasis on the word "one" was prone to misinterpretation.[5] However, “One Belt One Road" (Chinese: 一带一路) is still used in Chinese-language media.[6]

The Chinese government calls the initiative "a bid to enhance regional connectivity and embrace a brighter future".[7] Some observers see it as a push for Chinese dominance in global affairs with a China-centered trading network.[8][9] The project has a targeted completion date of 2049,[10] which coincides with the 100th anniversary of the People's Republic of China.

The reasons behind the Internet censorship in China include:

Social Control: The Internet is a means for freedom of speech, and dissemination of campaigns could lead to protests against the government.
Sensitive Content: To control information about the government in China.
As part of the Great Firewall, beginning in 2003 China started the Golden Shield Project , a massive surveillance and censoring system, the hardware for which was provided by mostly U.S. companies, including Cisco Systems. The project was completed in 2006 and is now carried out in buildings with machines manned by civilians and supervised by China's national police force, the Public Security Bureau (PSB). The main operating activities of the gatekeepers at the Golden Shield Project include monitoring domestic websites and email and searching for politically sensitive language and calls to protest. When damaging content is found, local PSB officials can be dispatched to investigate or make arrests.

    I'm all for competition.

Except google doesn't provide competition. They only intervene when they see potential for monopoly, which is exactly why they're doing this.

It's very smart to deny them.

Why China lags behind in global broadband speed ranking
China trails developed nations in report covering 200 countries

China may have the most internet users in the world, but its average broadband internet speed is just 2.4Mbps -- putting it in 141st place among 200 countries tested, according to a new report.

By contrast, the United States is the 20th-fastest country, with an average broadband speed of nearly 26Mbps.

The report -- based on data from M-Lab, a partnership between Google Open Source Research, Princeton University's PlanetLab and others -- ran 163 million individual speed tests in 200 countries.

It found that overall, broadband internet speeds have risen 23 percent over the past year -- although that improvement is focused on countries that already have relatively fast speeds.

you don't even know what you're talking about and you're saying i fail...

2.4 Mbps is obviously on their old copper telephone and cable networks. They are running fiber optic lines throughout their entire country. There is no attentuation on fiber like copper, they will get 1-2 Gbps everywhere. China is also a massive country, one of the biggest along with Russia, Canada and the US.

    America is also getting fiber.

Why do you think this somehow shows dominance?

That's like saying high-speed rail shows dominance when in reality it shows there's enough poor people to justify public transportation because the local populace are plebs that can't afford personal transportation.

It's just a utility. Higher-speed internet wouldn't give them some kind of advantage outside of downloading hentai quicker.

this is all about big data... AI and Automation... lol, not "browsing the internet" bandwidth. There's a reason why big tech are starting to lay their own cables.

reading half of these brain-dead miscers comments on these threads make me wonder how the tech landscape is going to look like in 10 or 20 years.

Explain how someone is going to need fiber in their personal home for AI?

It's not that bandwidth intensive outside of data centers.

So here we have OP yet again for the umpteenth time since at least 2013[https://forum.bodybuilding.com/showt...p?t=151577203] arguing what a great success a totalitarian communist government is.

With all the foreign opponent governments with internet shill armies shilling on our internets, namely Russia/China/Iran/North Korea, anyone with this sort of behavior on American forums should be forced to verify their identity to the admin or get the boot.
