messed up on maxing my 401k this year. should have put more earlier instead of later. was concerned id max too early and the company would stop the match.

i don't think i'm gonna max the roth this year. i know you can contribute up to 6500 but i'm not feeling it. too much tied up.
    i know i should but i dont wan't to. we'll see.

Learned recently to be careful giving advice to people, especially when they don't ask for it. And even when they do, unless people figure things out for themselves, it's generally useless. I try to lead by example and if asked then I'll divulge.

Literally almost everyone I say, "I'm maxing my stuff out", their response is usually... "must be nice" or "that just seems pointless".. lol

I'm pretty late to the game at 26 but opened a roth ira with vanguard this year and it's almost maxed out. Need to put in about $600 more.

Have the TSP too through the military but no way in hell can I max that out until I make some rank. Maxing that out is basically my yearly salary lmao.

You actually have until April 15, 2020 to contribute to towards the 2019 limit. So if youre in early 2020 and making a contribution, it makes sense to put it towards 2019 if you still can, because 2020 contributions deadline will be all the way to 2021.

Also the limits changed recently, I think in 2019. Its either 6k or 7k depending on your age. 6500 was for the previous years.

You putting in atleast the 5% to get 5% matching?

You can have a roth TSP too. The matches are required to be traditional though, since they are taken pretax. If you setup a roth TSP, that all happens automatically, the matching contributions are automatically put in a traditional subaccount.

Yea it's roth tsp. I'm putting in 10% atm. Had it at 30% earlier this year when I had less bills. I'm only getting a 1% match now unfortunately. I've only been in for a little over a year. 2 years to get the 5% matching.

You can have roth, traditional or both. The matching contributions would go into a traditional account though as you dont pay taxes on the matching portion, so they put it in traditional and you would pay the taxes eventually when you retire. The roth TSP works the same as a roth 401k or roth IRA as far as the money you put it in post tax so your withdrawls in retirement are tax free.
