Not an A/V guy but.... (4k tv gripe)

I got a 4k tv today on the cheap, and all the 4k content has the letterbox because none of it was made for TV's apparently. Bigger TV screen and res, smaller viewing size because 25% of screen real estate is black boxes. Might actually return it.

    Am I missing something here?

It's the same as with 1080p, 720p, or any resolutions having an aspect ratio different from 21:9.

There is plenty of content in 16:9. Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.

Software (VLC or Plex for ex) can also alleviate this, by zooming into a 16:9, cutting off a bit of the movie. I consume 90% of my content on my HTPC, rarely use the smart tv features.
