Curl bar: Rogue vs Rackable Rep fitness?

I’m in the market for a curl bar and was wondering which one you would buy between the stainless rackable rep fitness or the rogue curl bar? The price difference is pretty negligible for me between these two bars.

    Couple points:
-I’ve never used a rackable curl bar, but never felt limited or inconvenienced in any way by non-rackable ones.
-I have the Rogue Ohio bar and really enjoy the grippy but non-aggressive knurling. I’ve read the curl bar has the same knurling as the Ohio bar.
-I don’t know much about Rep Fitness. Their reputation seems like it’s improved quite a bit from 2015 when I first built my home gym.

I've got the Rep hard chrome version I would take it over the Rogue based only on the thickness of the shaft and knurl the rackable is just a really nice bonus.

FWIW, I have the Rogue curl bar, it's a very well made bar, I like the knurling and My bar has the e-coat finish, no grip issues.

The bends are fine for me, I don't have large hands, but I would have preferred a thicker grip , IMO 30mm would have been better.

I've never used a rackable curl bar and haven't really felt I needed one as I have other options.

The Rogue is a good bar, but it has a lot of competition, at it's current price I'm not convinced it offers the best value.

whaaat? Is a 30mm shaft preferred? I assumed that since all the cheap <$50 bars were 30mm and the rogue was 28.5, that the 28.5 diameter was “better”. Interesting to hear that’s not the case.

The Knurling is the main thing I’m worried about. I know a lot of people on this forum like powerlifting bars and sharper knurling...I am on the opposite end. I really like the non-aggressive knurling on the Ohio bar. Can you tell me why you prefer the knurling on the rep fitness? Maybe I’m missing something?

Im very similar to you...I also don’t have large hands either, medium sized I’d say, doubt grip issues will be a concern, and never felt the need (but have never used) a rackable bar.

If you were buying today would you think you’d pick up the rep fitness stainless over the rogue?

I think the knurling that I “know” from the Ohio bar, and knowing that the fit and finish on the Rogue will be perfect are the two main things keeping me from going “all in” on the rep. To be fair, I know nothing about rep’s fit and finish...

For triceps work 28.5mm is fine, I just find I get a better squeeze on biceps with a thicker bar.

The fit and finish on the Rogue bar is first class, for me the Rep bar is an unknown quantity, so it's difficult to evaluate, the SS finish would be nice, being able to rack the bar is not a priority for me, but it's hardly an disadvantage and I'm not too bothered by knurling depth/pattern, so I'd probably take a punt on the Rep bar.

For me, rackable is a negative. It makes it longer and gets in the way. I have my Rogue mounted in a Nebula skullcrusher bench: https://www.instagram.com/p/BtZNNXSA..._web_copy_link

I think the Rogue's e-coat is okay. I haven't had any issues, but the knurl is mild - i'm not sure if the ecoat filled in some of the valleys or it's just not a deep knurl to begin with.
I've owned a Rogue boneyard curl and a regular Rogue curl.

Synthetickiller has a review on the rep fitness curl bar. He mentioned imperfections with the knurling (which I can live with), and the fact that one sleeve spins better than the other one (which I couldn’t live with). Granted, sleeve spin is not really a problem for a curl bar, but I think it would just bug me.

I think I was sold on the rep bar, but now I’m leaning towards the Rogue bar again.

I have a pair of those fat grip things. Truth be told I had forgotten of their existence until your post. Maybe I’ll find them if I go with the rogue bar.

By the way, I just finished looking at pictures of your gym. BEAUTIFUL!!

Cool skull crushers bench. Definitely don’t have the space for one of those in my gym.

I have a bit of a similar concern. Even though I like the idea of being able to load plates on the rack, I am a little worried that the longer bar would be somewhat unwieldy for skull crushers.

I like the knurl because its short sections and semi passive. I have big hands so the 30mm shaft seems to sit in them better than the smaller curl bar it replaced xmark curl bar if memory serves. I have a rogue bar 2.0 which I assume is fairly close to the ohio bar and it also seems rather passive compared to my OPB or deadlift bar. I have not been bothered by the length of the bar for any lifts but can see where it could be a problem. The sleeves of my bar seem to spin about the same or maybe they don't I've never paid close enough attention to it.

FWIW, I really like 30mm for curl bars. I have a 30mm entry-level non-rackable Ivanko oxide bar and it feels great. Rep rackable stainless interests me as an upgrade, but it's a luxury item for sure.

If I was considering Rogue vs Vulcan, I'd probably go Vulcan based on this review:

I decided to go with the Rogue bar. Thanks to everyone who helped.

I really wanted to like the rep bar and had being rackable been important to me I’d have gone that direction. What gave me pause was that I just found too many “well X is wrong with it, but it’s minor and I’m still happy with my purchase” reviews regarding their barbells.

Saw that. I’ll be grabbing one when it goes live.

Based on some of their other barbells Im guessing it’ll be about $10 off. Is that about what you’re expecting too?

Hoping for more than that, but not holding my breath either. I think I've seen them in the boneyard before for $150 or so.

I'll probably throw some T-shirts and hoodie in to get the 5 for $5 shipping.

    This. Same here.

If you want 28 mm curl bar look for old(70's) York curl bars. They are nice and are not rack able and no knurling. These are found more often on CL etc as compared knurled 80's curl bar.

For 30 mm , Ivanko OBZ-55 is the best . Bends are awesome. I used it over the standing preacher bench.

Well, it was $25 off. Not bad. Got mine ordered.
You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.

Haha you called it. I was pleasantly surprised by the $25 off.

I was on the road and made it back home 18 minutes after the hot deal went live and they only had 53% more at that price. Didn’t last long at all...counting down until Thursday when it arrives.

Such a nice bar, I just couldn’t get myself to justify the extra price on the Ivanko.

Lol to the last few posts. Since the thread got bumped I guess I’ll give an update.

The Rogue bar came in on Thursday. I mean..it’s a curl bar, but I’m very happy with it. It has the same exact spin and knurling as my Ohio bar which is what I wanted.

Don’t have enough posts to upload a pic, but here’s a pic of it:

imgur.co m/a/aIPSME5 (remove space...I guess I accidentally marked the image as “18+“ but it’s just a pic of my rack with the curl bar sitting on it unfortunately)

Good to know the knurl is the same as your Ohio bar. Seemed likely, but not a given. Sounds like you got what you wanted. Congrats! Rogue makes good stuff.

Rogue better fit and finish. Rep look likes like trash with the short sections of knurl to cut cost. Some of you guys that like cheap **** really get awfully sensitive. Please don't neg me...

Cocklifter , i know you think youre something rather special with your goofy site and t shirts and selling all your useless junk. listening to a guy thats a buck fifty max squatting 400 lbs hyperanalzing bars for a five page article is hilarious and explains why you dont look like you lift despite dedicating and setting up a site related to lifting. Youre probably one of those guys that knows the specs for all the guns but can't shoot straight to save your life. Send me one of those lame ass shirts that says garage gym lab. cant imagine walking around in public with that gooofy shirt...probably the only way anyone would ever know you might have touched a weight if you're lucky. Please post more articles promoting that free sandune stepper you got. Always wanted a 300 dollar piece of foam...Hope i get the gains that youve gotten from that innovative product.

With all of your wisdom and experience, what do you recommend to those who can't afford Rogue and want or need a home setup in order to lift?

Not once have I ever said Rep is equal to Rogue on fit and finish. They still have a ways to go on QC.
