The push for vegan and vegetarian diets?

Why do you think there is such a mainstream push for these sorts of diets?
Is it an effort to dumb down the population?

There is a shift towards liberalism and equality, especially in the Western world as the demographics are changing and pluralism is more common.

In terms of equality, people want more 'rights' and recognition of animals and animal abuse. You can see there is also an ongoing trend throughout history leading to greater respect and rights for animals. There was just a federal law passed in the house and senate to punish animal cruelty. One of the most common points you hear from vegans and vegetarians is the atrocity of slaughterhouses, and they're not wrong although a necessity for production and natural aspect of industrialization and mass production. Try watching the documentary called 'Earthlings'.

I eat meat, and will continue to do so because I firmly believe humans are supposed to. I have a decent household budget so I have the luxury of buying more humanly raised meat mostly.

However, I firmly believe that in the nearish future we will be able to grow meat in factories (without the animal attached to it) and after a number of decades of that being cheaper and more delicious than slaughtering an animal our descendants will look at factory farms with the same kind of eyes as we do to slavery today (well, probably not everyone on this board ;p).

I don't think there's a mainstream push, per say. I think that veganism and vegetarian diets are being more openly discussed and the merits (not many) are more accepted. The real problem, as with most things, is misinformation. The Netflix "documentary" The Game Changers doesn't have a shred of science to back it, yet had a seemingly large impact (positive) on social media.

I agree, humans have been eating meat for millions of years it's not something that can be turned off with a switch. I think the near future is going to show rapid progress in clone technology and artificial meat rendering slaughterhouses obsolete and facilitating widespread production to people who are malnourished or dying.

For many people it would be an easy solution to their health/overweight problems when eating clean plant-based.

Whilst it's mainly left/liberal people doing it, there are some high-test, right-wing slayers doing it too.
Pretty dangerous when already high-libido and libido gets even higher because of plant-based .

It is A LOT more energy an water efficient to feed a population on a plant based diet compared to a meat based diet. The amount of fosil fuels and water used to raise and feed livestock is outragoues when compared to what it takes to feed a population with plant based foods.

Lab grown meat is a different story, but until that becomes a reality is just a waste of land, water and energy to "harvest" meat compared to plants
When you come to think of it, almost all human behaviour and activity is not essentially any different from animal behaviour. The most advanced technologies and craftsmanship bring us, at best, up to the super-chimpanzee level. Actually, the gap between, say, Plato or Nietzsche and the average human is greater than the gap between that chimpanzee and the average human.

I'm liking it. People are waking up to how fukked up the meat industry is and how meat is unnecessary for health or performance.

I'm sure one day humanity will look back on the meat industry just as we now look back on many fukked up things of the past.

However it's fairly moot as lab grown meat is very close and then we can literally have our cake and eat it too.

Meat should be WAY more expensive (at least in the US and other fat countries).
Fattest economic demographic is poor people in first world countries. Make meat more expensive and then less fatties will head to mcdonalds to shovel down 3 cheeseburgers or 20 mcnuggets everyday

I agree. Also I think it a blend of this+a trend that will die+influence from enemy groups to weaken us, Im pretty convinced.

99% of vegans are sickly and weak, thats a part of why theres a huge push to drop meat. Meat makes us strong and muscular.

FUKK YOU! I love meat and its already pricey enough.

If you want to combat fatties, why would you attack meat? Attack sugar and processed foods, thats what made us obese.

I eat minimal meat because it's better for my health. Chicken and egg when I can, rarely any other meat enters my body unless a special occasion.

The health benefits of plants are overwhelming.

Chicken is better than tofu in my opinion.

The lifestyle of veg/vegan seems to be becoming a fad (just like organic everything), which is fine for those who want to participate, but it's suspicious when people start to tie it to things like climate change. People who do that are definitely pushing it.

Lots of reasons, none of them top-down conspirotard nonsense but rather bottom-up movement from society as a whole. I see this as a long-term trend thing rather than a flash in the pan.

    - Vegetarianism has a long history but probably started gathering momentum in the West back in the 60s. So that's 50+ years of society as a whole gradually inclining towards a less meat based diet.

    - People in the West have also become more aware of, and concerned with, animal welfare and that's also a long term trend. Animal welfare and factory farming don't line up very well. Most of our meat and animal products are factory farmed, hence the quandary.

    - More recently an awareness of climate change and the contribution of meat farming to that.

    - Society is wealthier and can better cater to the requirements of veggies and vegans, meaning there is money to be made in it, meaning it's easier to eschew meat. This forms a positive feedback loop, as there is less reason not to go meat-free, if that's your inclination.

    - Lastly it's a great issue for angry young people to adopt as part of a broader umbrella. Nothing like labelling the fat cats that run society as cruel to animals as well as greedy, uncaring and selfish.
I will read and review 100 books this year: https://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=176675491

“Many religions now come before us with ingratiating smirks and outspread hands, like an unctuous merchant in a bazaar. They offer consolation and solidarity and uplift, competing as they do in a marketplace. But we have a right to remember how barbarically they behaved when they were strong and were making an offer that people could not refuse.”
