In terms of science, countless open questions: a quantum theory of gravity is needed, theory of everything, what really is/within a black hole, life elsewhere in the universe, why are the dimensionless fundamental constants what they are (eg the ratio of a proton's rest mass to that of the electron is about 1836), origin of life on earth, even basic facts about our solar system like the internal makeup of Jupiter, the trans-Neptunian landscape (Planet 9 etc), and all kinds of other questions about the planets.

There are countless open questions in mathematics. We don't even know some basic things like whether (p+e) or pi*e are irrational, although we do know at least one is, or whether pi is normal. We don't know whether every even number >2 is the sum of two primes, or whether there are an infinite number of twin primes. Although we do know some basic facts about the primes in terms of their distribution (the Prime Number Theorem)....in reality we are quite clueless as to the finer details of this distribution, or, for example, whether the nontrivial zeroes of the Riemann Zeta function all have real part 1/2. Hell, we don't even know for sure if ZFC, the standard axiomatic framework of modern set theory, is inconsistent (it cannot be proved from within ZFC that ZFC is consistent per Gödel's incompleteness theorem). In a sense, some things in math are simply unknowable- formal systems that are rich enough to contain basic arithmentic are limited.

Philosophically- stuff like what is the meaning of existence, reason for the universe etc, of course is also not known, but the problem with these topics is any discussion will typically resort to babble. For this reason, I find the scientific/mathematical unanswered questions above to be more interesting than philosophical ones, as they are somewhat more capable of actually being answered through investigation.

We've barely scratched the surface of what's going on in our own solar system. They're finding objects with such long, elliptical orbits that we wouldn't have seen them for thousands of years if they hadn't luckily been near their perhelion when discovered.

    I've got two

    1. The sun spits out planets that make their way into a star system where they form.

    2. Black holes are recycling centers for star matter. They suck in dead star matter and recycle it into new star matter that is spit out into the universe and is essentially the beginning of a newly formed star system that will eventually harbor planets and moons.

Neil deGrasse Tyson says his biggest fear, the thing that keeps him up at night is the possibility that we don't have the actual physical/mental structure to understand the universe.

For example. An ant may live in a nuclear power plant, but there is no way ever that ant will have the ability to understand what it is and where it is and the nature of the place in which it lives.

    That is us, boyos.

Well, I don't really think that the end can be assessed as of itself as being the end because what does the end feel like? It's like saying when you try to extrapolate the end of the universe, you say, if the universe is indeed infinite, then how - what does that mean? How far is all the way, and then if it stops, what's stopping it, and what's behind what's stopping it? So, what's the end, you know, is my question to you.

I'm sorry but Neil Degrasse Tyson is a fukking loony toon. That should never be a fear.

I can't stand the "Science" religion speak. It's all fear porn that never comes true. They constantly talk about how small and insignificant we are, how we are a drop in the sea in the universe, how we can't understand anything, etc. It is purely to make you feel small and useless.

Every mystery, idea, discovery, exploration, unknown, should all be looked at with curiosity and interest. Not fear and worry. It literally has zero effect on us in any way shape or form. Zero.

He's a pussy though, which is why the thought of the unknown makes him piss his pants at night. He probably has a night light too and footy pajamas and a binky.

It's an interesting theory but an ant in a power plant today and an ant in a power plant a millions years ago and an ant in a power plant in a millions years from now will all have the same understanding of that place: none. And yet humans of today have an entirely different (and better) understanding of the nature of our universe than 10,000 years ago, 2,000 years ago, 500 years ago, even 50 years ago. Who knows what kind of understanding we'll have in 100 years from now or 500 years from now.
