I learned a bit of portuguese, it is very easy for me since spanish is my native language. For you it will be more challenging because you're a germanic language speaker, but once you have spanish down other romance langauges will be easier to learn.

I liked the approach this guy has

It works really well at first, but to truly develop listening skills, you're mind needs to focus on listening alone, without the subs. In fact, watching with subs won't help your listening if all you're doing is reading them. It's reading practice.

good job OP keep it up! So important to exercise your brain and continue to learn new things, learning a new language instead of random stats on football players good man.

I'd recommend watching videos on how people from certain countries talk to learn how to pronounce like them and the accent they use.

I've learnt Japanese as I deal with them quite often in my line of work and they are massive on their own culture, it's helped me build a much better relationship with them purely due to me taking the time to learn the language. It's been a great experience overall, at times super frustrating when I felt like I wasn't making progress. Once I felt confident enough to have a conversation I begun watching videos on how they talk.

    Next up is German!

    Thumbs up

Ja. I learned Norwegian for a work assignment. Ended up not going because the lady I was with at the time wasn't down once she got preggors, rip.

Kept it up. Speaking is decent but listening is terrible. Reading and writing is pretty decent. I still practice daily on Duolingo. 860+ day streak.

I've actually never visited but I plan to soon... Finally.

Nah. Spanish is an incredibly annoying language when spoken by natives.

I might learn Italian or French though. Aesthetic as fuk languages and would serve me well if I ever traveled there

Although in 2020 English will become a mandatory subject for fifth- and sixth-graders here in Japan when I was young, we started only at Junior High, 13 years old. However the English we learn here is still mainly for entrance examinations and far from practical for our daily life.

Speaking for myself, I started learning English seriously in my 20s. I loved/love rock music, novels and movies in this language. I also started serious weight training about the same time and the main source of information for bodybuilding were magazines like Muscle Mag, Muscle & Fitness which weren't sold in every bookstore. Those days we don't have Internet so we have to use paper dictionaries to learn new words, with no cable/Sat TVs available, bilingual TV programs were rare and rental movies were on VHS video tapes without English subtitle (Japanese subtitle was meaningless and useless). I couldn't afford a language school ($50 a lesson). It's especially hard to learn speaking English because there are no native friend to speak to.

Of course, I'm not as good English speaker as you people here but I managed to learn the passable language and I think with right motivations any body can do it.

As long as you keep trying, time is your friend for learning languages. Good luck!

    Effectively twice over.

I'd just focus on the top 1000 words and place emphasis on the verbs.

Best way to learn without problem is record yourself saying the words and definitions 3-5x over and then listen to it in your idle time, ie driving to and from work, cooking, cleaning, getting ready for work, before bed, even in the shower.
Through every generation of the human race there has been a constant war, a war with fear. Those who have the courage to conquer it are made free and those who are conquered by it are made to suffer until they have the courage to defeat it, or death takes them.

Learning japanese on and off for the past year. Hiragana (one of their 3 alphabets) is so easy to learn you could learn it in a day and feel like a pro at nihongo. I know a few basic phrases but still trying to get an ear for the language and learning basic sentence structure. Always fun to learn something new

Yes, Portuguese. Been studying for 7 months now and I can be considered fluent - still have plenty to improve upon but can converse fluidly in the language. My girlfriend is Brazilian and doesn't speak English well so that has helped me learn quickly. I take lessons via Skype, don't waste your time with things like Duolingo or Rosetta Stone.

You two, mirin for the attitude toward life and the will to make it better by doing something about it yourselves. *bow*

I learned to read and write Lao in a week using a free FSI (foreign service institute) program a few years ago. I few years later i speak fluently. I read a news article a couple years back about how learning a new language can help stop the onset of dementia.

Did 4 years of spanish in school.

Forgot most of it. Even while I was in the courses I wasnt retaining most of everything. It was just endless morization of verb conjugations. There are like 20 different forms or some chit and on top of it there are all the nonstandard ones. It wasnt just past, present future. You say chit different if it was in the past but only happened once, or if it was in the past but routinely happened and all this chit.

If I would have retained everything they ever tought us, I would basically be fluent. Even at the time, I could open a spanish newspaper article, and maybe not word for word know what it said but get the general gist of what they were saying.

All of these software programs though they are a lot of noun memorization. There is a weird thing though when I use them. I remember a lot more than I thought I did. Like all these nouns are buried in my brain somewhere, I cant consciously bring them back but when they show me multiple choice test on these software programs I am nailing them left and right.

Anyone ever try to relearn a language and what was your approach?
